Es ist ein weiterer kurzer, kalter und windiger Wintertag in Norddeutschland. Die Kulisse der rauhen Ostsee, habe ich nun jedoch gegen die weiten Ebenen des Norddeutschen Tieflandes eingetauscht. Eingebettet in eine weitläufige Seenlandschaft, wurde Schwerin, die Hauptstadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns, als erster Stadt in der Region, durch Heinrich den Löwen, das Stadtrecht verliehen.
Ihr kennt Heinrich den Löwen, wie ich, auch nicht? Das ist etwas ungünstig, schliesslich beginnt die Stadttour mit dem Satz: "Heinrich den Löwen kennt ihr ja". Tatsächlich handelt es sich bei ihm um einen bedeutenden Herzog des 12. Jahrhundert aus dem Haus der Welfen. Heinrich der Löwe nimmt in Schwerin eine Art "Vater-der-Stadt" - Figur ein. Seine geschichtliche Rolle variiert dabei je nach Sichtweise von "Held und Gründer der Stadt", über "Lehnsherr der dort zuvor wohnhaften Slawen", bis zum "Eroberer des Gebiets, der die Slawen vertrieben hat". Die Wahrheit liegt wohl irgendwo dazwischen. Was hingegen heute noch greifbar ist, ist die städtebauliche Entwicklung der Stadt Schwerin. Die noch weitestgehend erhaltene, schöne Altstadt und das prunkvolle Schloss, sollen kommendes Jahr, UNESCO - Weltkulturerbe werden. Wohlverdient, denke ich!

It's another short, cold and windy winter's day in northern Germany. However, I have now swapped the backdrop of the rough Baltic Sea for the vast plains of the North German lowlands. Embedded in a vast lake landscape, Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was the first city in the region to be granted city rights by Henry the Lion.
Like me, you don't know Henry the Lion? That's a bit unfourtunate, as the city tour begins with the sentence: "You of course know Henry the Lion". In fact, he was an important duke of the 12th century from the House of Welfs. Henry the Lion is a kind of "father of the city" figure in Schwerin. Depending on the point of view, his historical role varies from "hero and founder of the city", to "feudal lord of the Slavs who previously lived there", to "conqueror of the region who drove out the Slavs". The truth probably lies somewhere in between. What is still tangible today, however, is the urban development of the city of Schwerin. The still largely preserved, beautiful old town and the magnificent castle are to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site next year. Well deserved, I think!Baca lagi
