Um 03:30 aufstehen, um bereits um acht Uhr in Quedlinburg anzukommen...wer hatte denn diese durchgeknallte Idee? Ach ja - das war ja ich. Die Stadt ist menschenleer, erste Weihnachtsmarkts-Standbesitzer öffen ihre Geschäfte, und meine dunklen Augenringe werden nur durch die Kerzen des Weihnachtsmarktes in ein sanftes Licht getaucht.
Während die Stadt langsam erwacht, besuche ich schon erste Sehenswürdigkeiten, die vielen Fachwerkhäuser haben es mir angetan. Der frühe Start erweist sich als hervorragende Idee. Spätestens Anfang Nachmittag, wird die Stadt durch Touristenströme überrannt. Ein Vorwärtskommen ist in der Innenstadt kaum mehr möglich, durch die Stadt zu gehen fühlt sich an, wie ein Besuch in Venedig. Nicht die Temperatur, oder die Lagunen, sondern die schieren Menschenmassen. Was mit dem UNESCO-Welterbe und berühmtem Weihnachtsmarkt begann, scheint inzwischen unter dem Erfolg, und dem damit einsetzenden Massentourismus, zu leiden. Alles in allem: Quedlinburg ist definitiv ein must-see - aber vielleicht ausserhalb der Hauptsaison.

Getting up at 03:30 to arrive in Quedlinburg at eight o'clock...who had this crazy idea? Oh yes - that was me. The town is deserted, the first Christmas market stallholders are opening their shops and my dark circles under my eyes are only softly illuminated by the candles of the Christmas market.
As the city slowly awakens, I visit the first sights and I'm enamoured by the many half-timbered houses. Starting early proves to be an excellent idea. By early afternoon at the latest, the city is overrun by streams of tourists. Moving forward in the city centre is hardly possible, walking through the city feels like a visit to Venice. Not the temperature, or the lagoons, but the sheer masses of people. What started out as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous Christmas market now seems to be suffering from its success and the mass tourism that comes with it. All in all: Quedlinburg is definitely a must-see - but perhaps outside the main season.Lue lisää
