Nîmes bildet den Auftakt meiner Ausflüge in Südfrankreich. Hier ist die römische Vergangenheit durch das Amphitheater, das Maison Carrée und den Tour Magne besonders präsent. Der Glanz Roms musste jedoch schliesslich anderen Mächten weichen. Die genaue Abfolge von Eroberungen durch Westgoten, Franken, Sarazenen, Septimaner, Aragonen und anderen erspare ich euch jedoch (vorerst). Heute geniessen wir dafür ein Picknick in den "Jardins de La Fontaine" und versuchen den vom Wind aufgewirbelten Staubwolken auszuweichen. Für letzteres zeigt sich der Mistral verantwortlich - kein Wunder ist der Name des Windes eines der ersten Wörter, welches ich hier in Südfrankreich gelernt habe.

Nîmes marks the start of my excursions in the south of France. The Roman past is particularly present here with the amphitheatre, the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne. However, the splendour of Rome eventually had to give way to other powers. I will spare you the exact sequence of conquests by Visigoths, Franks, Saracens, Septimans, Aragons and others (for now). Instead, today we enjoy a picnic in the "Jardins de La Fontaine" and try to avoid the clouds of dust whirled up by the wind. The Mistral is responsible for the latter - no wonder the name of the wind is one of the first words I learnt here in the south of France.Read more
