Side Quest: Charlotte, USA

Reisen ist halt doch immer für eine Überraschung gut. Heute Morgen hatte ich noch nicht erwartet, dass ich in Charlotte zu Abend essen würde. Natürlich wusste ich, dass ich hier umsteigen würde. Aber ich plante in diesen zwei Stunden Umsteigezeit den Flughafen nicht zu verlassen. Und genau da liegt die Ursache der Misere - oder aber des Abenteuers, je nach Perspektive. Der Flug von Toronto war schliesslich mehr als zwei Stunden verspätet, weshalb ich meinen Anschluss nach San Antonio verpasste und nun erst kurz nach Mitternacht in Texas eintreffen werde - armer Jerry, der mich dann am Flughafen abholen muss. Aber bis dahin bin ich wohl in Charlotte. Im europäischen Vergleich ist das etwa so als würde man auf einem Flug von London nach Istanbul in Prag stranden - nur vielleicht ohne das touristische Flair.
Allerding, obwohl Charlotte jetzt nicht gerade der Touristen - Hotspot ist, war ich hier schonmal. Ich erinnere mich noch gut, war es doch der erste Roadtrip während meines Austauschsemesters in Washington DC 2022. Ich hatte nicht gedacht, dass ich je in diese Stadt zurückkehren würde. Aber so spielt das Leben manchmal. Ich mache das beste drauf und geniesse meinen ersten Urlaubsabend, wenn auch im falschen Bundesstaat.

Travelling always has a surprise in store. This morning, I hadn't expected to be having dinner in Charlotte. Of course, I knew I would be changing planes here. But I hadn't planned on leaving the airport during the two-hour layover. And that's exactly where the problem lies - or the adventure, depending on your perspective. The flight from Toronto was more than two hours late, which meant I missed my connection to San Antonio and will now arrive in Texas shortly after midnight - poor Jerry, who has to pick me up at the airport. But until then, I'll be in Charlotte. In European terms, it's like being stranded in Prague on a flight from London to Istanbul - only perhaps without the tourist flair.
However, although Charlotte is not exactly a tourist hotspot, I have been here before. I remember it well, as it was the first road trip during my exchange semester in Washington DC in 2022. I never thought I would return to this city. But that's how life is sometimes. I'm making the best of it and enjoying my first evening of holiday, even if it is in the wrong state.Leggi altro
