    Die Zeit fliegt. Wieder ist eine Woche vorbei, mein Besuch ist abgereist, und der strahlende Herbst weicht einer kühlen Bise. Unso mehr ist das ein Grund in der anstehenden vorlesungsfreien Reading-Week Toronto hinter mir zu lassen und weiter südlich Kultur, Geschichte und warmes Wetter zu suchen.

    Time flies. Another week has passed, my visitors have left, and the glorious autumn weather is giving way to a cool breeze. All the more reason to leave Toronto behind during the upcoming lecture-free reading week and head further south in search of culture, history and warm weather.    Leer más

    Heute fahren wir nach Kitchener, oder Berlin, wie die Stadt einst hiess, bevor sie im Ersten Weltkrieg nach dem heute kontroversen Field Marshal Kitchener umbenannt wurde. Wir lassen ihnen das mangelnde Händchen in der Namenswahl jedoch durchgehen, schliesslich sind sie auch nur von unkreativen deutschen oder englischen Städtenamen umgeben. Von London bis Stratford und Heidelberg bis Hamburg ist alles vertreten. Wir sind jedoch erstmal vorallem am bekannten Farmer's Market interessiert, wo wir uns von dem mal mehr oder weniger genmanipulierten, lokalen Gemüse beeindrucken lassen. In der Gegend lebt eine grosse mennonitische Gemeinschaft – und nachdem sich unser Tischnachbar eine Weile unser Schweizerdeutsch angehört hatte, empfahl er uns schliesslich ein gutes mennonitisches Restaurant. (Die Sprache klingt wohl erstaunlich ähnlich.)
    Nach dem Markt gibt es vor der Abfahrt noch einen "History Boost" im kleinen aber feinen Museum, dem "Schneider Haus", wo die Mitarbeitenden uns mit viel Enthusiasmus herumführen.

    Today we are travelling to Kitchener, or Berlin, as the city was once called before it was renamed after the now controversial Field Marshal Kitchener during the First World War. However, we will forgive them for their lack of flair in choosing a name; after all, they are surrounded by uncreative German and English city names. From London to Stratford and Heidelberg to Hamburg, everything is represented. However, we are primarily interested in the famous Farmer's Market, where we are impressed by the local vegetables. A large Mennonite community lives in the area – and after listening to our Swiss German for a while, a man next to us at our table recommended a good Mennonite restaurant. (The language sounds apparently remarkably similar.)
    After the market, before we leave, we get a "history boost" in the small but charming museum, the "Schneider Haus", where the staff give us an enthusiastic tour.    Leer más

    Meine Reisegruppe steht heute pünktlich um 08:30 bereit, es geht auf an die Niagarafälle. Das Highlight dabei ist bestimmt die Bootsfahrt zu den Fällen - und natürlich wird man da trotz allen Vorkehrungen wieder (zumindest etwas) nass. Vielleicht ist das aber auch die Rache des Wasserfalles an Mirjam, die ihn als "nicht hoch genug" betitelt hatte.
    Auf dem Rückweg führt dann leider (wortwörtlich) kein Weg am Stau vorbei - da hilft nur ein feiner italienischer Zncht um das wieder auszugleichen.

    My tour group is ready and waiting at 8:30 a.m. sharp today, and we're off to Niagara Falls. The highlight is definitely the boat trip to the falls – and of course, despite all the precautions, you still get (at least a little) wet. But maybe that's the waterfall's revenge on Mirjam, who said it wasn't "high enough".
    On the way back, unfortunately, there is (literally) no way around the traffic jam – the only thing that helps is a tasty Italian dinner to make up for it.    Leer más

    Wer hätte gedacht, dass ich nach rund einem Monat im Semester plötzlich noch in die Arbeitswut verfalle. Das lange Thanksgiving - Wochenende verbringe ich grossteils mit Kaffee, akademischen Artikeln und den allmählichen entstehenden Augenringen.
    Dieser kleine Waschbär, den ich im Park entdeckt habe, verkörpert mein aktuelles Lebensgefühl erstaunlich gut: ein bisschen übernächtigt, leicht verpeilt und doch immer auf der Suche nach dem nächsten lohnenden Fund. In seinem Fall: Snacks. In meinem: halbwegs zitierfähige Quellen. (Und auch Snacks)
    Das Ganze hat allerdings einen guten Grund: Nächste Woche stehen gleich drei Abgaben an. Und danach wartet viel Quality-Time mit Besuch aus der Schweiz: Mama, Mirjam und Verena sind da!

    Who would have thought that after about a month into the semester, I would suddenly fall into a frenzy of work. I spend most of the long Thanksgiving weekend with coffee, academic articles and gradually developing dark circles under my eyes.
    This little raccoon I spotted in the park sums up my current state of mind pretty well: a bit sleep-deprived, slightly out of it, but always on the lookout for the next worthwhile find. In its case: snacks. In mine: reasonably quotable sources. (And also snacks)
    There is a good reason for all this, though: I have three assignments due next week. And after that, I'll be spending lots of quality time with visitors from Switzerland: Mama, Mirjam and Verena are coming!    Leer más

    Thousand Islands, ON, Canada

    Was ein klangvoller Name: Thousand Islands. Da kann man es mit dem Zählen auch gernemal nicht so genau nehmen. "Eintausendachthundertvierundsechzig“ - Island Region, also die tatsächliche Anzahl der Inseln, wäre wohl weniger packend gewesen.
    Aber die Besserwisserei mal beiseite: die Region ist wirklich etwas ganz besonderes. Ich sichere mir einen Platz auf dem Schiff "Island Queen", einem Schiff im alten Stil, bei dem man sich sofort ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückversetzt fühlt, obwohl das Schiff nur ein Nachbau ist. Vom Boot lassen sich nicht bloss die zahlreichen Inseln sehen, es ist auch gerade der beginnende Herbst, und die kanadischen Wälder färben sich in bunten Farben - doch sehr selbst!

    What a melodious name: Thousand Islands. It's easy to be a little vague when it comes to counting. "One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Four" – Island Region, i.e. the actual number of islands, would probably have been less exciting.
    But let's put the pedantry aside: the region really is something very special. I secure a place on the Island Queen, an old-style ship that immediately transports you back to the 19th century, even though it is only a replica. Not only can you see the numerous islands from the boat, but it is also the beginning of autumn and the Canadian forests are turning colourful – very beautiful indeed!    Leer más

    Nachdem ich die Nacht in einem ehemaligen Gefängnis verbracht habe, ist ein eben solches meine erste Anlaufstelle in Kingston, das Kingston Penitentiary - wenn auch dieses Mal nicht zum Übernachten. Es mag das "Heimweh" an mein Ottawa-Hostel sein, die mich antreibt - oder einfach die lange Geschichte des Ortes. Das Gefängnis wurde 2013 nach 178 Jahren geschlossen. Das Hochsicherheitsgefängnis ist also, gebaut 1835, älter als Kanada als eigenständiges Land. Es war somit auch einen Zeit lang die älteste noch in Betrieb stehende Vollzugsanstalt der Welt. Die Führung durch ehemalige Gefängniswärter ist sehr beeindruckend.
    Weiter sieht man in Kingston eine alte Villa im italienischen Stil, in der der erste kanadische Premierminister, John MacDonald, eine Zeit lang gelebt hat und nun zu einem Museum umfunktioniert ist. Dazu gäbe es eigentlich noch ein bekanntes Fort aus dem Krieg von 1812, auf welches mir jedoch nur ein Aussenblick vergönnt ist, denn die Touristensaison ist im Oktober leider schon vorbei.

    After spending the night in a former prison, this is my first port of call in Kingston, the Kingston Penitentiary - although not for an overnight stay this time. It may be the "homesickness" for my Ottawa hostel that drives me - or simply the long history of the place. The prison was closed in 2013 after 178 years. Built in 1835, the maximum security prison is therefore older than Canada as an independent country. For a time, it was also the oldest prison in the world still in operation. The guided tour by former prison officers is very impressive.
    In Kingston you can also see an old Italian-style villa in which the first Canadian Prime Minister, John MacDonald, lived for a time and which has now been converted into a museum. There is also a well-known fort from the War of 1812, but I can only see it from the outside, as the tourist season is unfortunately already over in October.    Leer más

    24 Grad mit kurzen Hosen eine Stadt erkunden - und das im Oktober. Das kann ich dieses Wochenende in Ottawa. Erst aber heisst es am Morgen mal noch frieren, denn ich komme um sieben Uhr mit einem Nachbus aus Toronto an. Bei einem Kaffee versuche ich die Müdigkeit abzuschütteln, klingen doch Nachtbusse vorallem auf dem Papier gut, praktisch und vorallem günstig. In der Praxis ist es meist eng, Schlaf ist selten, aber die Nackenstarre dafür garantiert.
    Inzwischen sind die Temperaturen in den zweistelligen Bereich geklettert und es geht auf zum Sightseeing. Ich besuche zwei Museen, nehme an einer Tour durch das Senatsgebäude teil und schlendere durch die Stadt. Das Senatsgebäude, zentral in der Innenstadt, war früher mal der Hauptbahnhof. Heute ist dieser 5km ausserhalb der Stadt, denn die Städteplaner waren der Ansicht, es fahre heute ohnehin jeder Auto.
    Den Abend verbringe ich im ByWard Market District, einer der wenigen Orte hier in Kanada, den ich als gemütlich wahrnehme. Viele Kaffees, Restaurants und Marktstände - und kaum Autos. Dort gehe ich dann auch mit Leuten aus meinem Hostel etwas trinken. Besagtes Hostel befindet sich übrigens in einem alten Gefängnis, in dem man, etwas umgebaut, in den alten Zellen übernachtet. Definitiv eine Erfahrung wert!

    24 degrees and exploring a city in shorts - in October. I can do that this weekend in Ottawa. But first I have to freeze in the morning, because I arrive at seven o'clock on a night bus from Toronto. I try to shake off the tiredness with a coffee, as night buses sound good, practical and above all cheap, especially on paper. In practice, it's usually cramped, sleep is rare, but stiff necks are guaranteed.
    By now the temperatures have climbed into double figures and it's time to go sightseeing. I visit two museums, take part in a tour of the Senate building and stroll through the city. The Senate building, centrally located in the city centre, used to be the main railway station. Today, the station is 5 kilometres outside the city, because the city planners were of the opinion that everyone drives a car these days anyway.
    I spend the evening in the ByWard Market District, one of the few places here in Canada that I perceive as cosy. Lots of cafés, restaurants and market stalls - and hardly any cars. I also go for a drink there with people from my hostel. Incidentally, the hostel in question is located in an old prison, where you can spend the night in the old cells, which have been somewhat remodelled. Definitely worth the experience!    Leer más

    Die University of Toronto mag vieles sein, ein Ort in dem man mal gemütlich so ins Semester starten kann ist sie jedoch nicht. Gleich zu Beginn gilt die Devise: you have to hit the ground running. So habe ich bereits in den ersten drei Wochen zwei Präsentationen und mehrere Abgaben. Da bleibt wenig Zeit für ausschweifende Ausflüge. Das stellt sich aber generell als schwierig heraus. Toronto sieht auf der Landkarte sehr zentral aus, ist aber geografisch ziemlich isoliert. Der einzige Tagesausflug der ohne Auto zu bewältigen ist, sind die Niagarafälle. Die nächstgelegende touristisch interessante Stadt, Kingston, ist über 250km weit weg, nach Montreal sind es gar über 500km. Generell gilt: ausserhalb (und manchmal auch innerhalb) der Städte ist man ohne Auto aufgeschmissen.

    The University of Toronto may be many things, but it is not a place where you can start the semester in a relaxed manner. Right from the start, the motto is: you have to hit the ground running. I already have two presentations and several assignments in the first three weeks. There's not much time left for excursions. But that generally turns out to be difficult. Toronto looks very central on the map, but is geographically quite isolated. The only day trip that can be managed without a car is to Niagara Falls. The nearest city of tourist interest, Kingston, is over 250 kilometres away, and Montreal even over 500 kilometres. Generally speaking, outside (and sometimes even inside) the cities, you're lost without a car.    Leer más
