    Delhi

    October 3, 2022 in India ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Arrival at 00:30 - trying to get to the hotel. Lots of roads closed out of safety reasons. Our driver can’t find a way to the hotel and drops us at a tourist center the driver wants to have his money but we don’t have rupia yet so we need to give him 10€ which is still a lot in India. We get a new driver who knows the way to the hotel and we don’t need to pay him. Arrived at 1:00 at the hotel and the staff is asleep behind the counter. We need to wake them up to check in.Read more

Taj Majal - Shut up and take my money

    October 5, 2022 in India ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We booked a trip to Agra - Taj Mahal to take some pictures at sunrise. The booking agent said it will be no problem from Delhi when we start at 3:30 in the morning. We arrived 2 hours after sunrise. This was the first downer. Second came in place as we noticed that our driver is so tired that he fells asleep while driving so we needed to keep him awake even though we are crazy tired.
We were able to avoid a „guide“ for Taj organized by our driver but we somehow got trapped with another guide from the government which was free but really unnecessary because we wanted to discover it ourselves!
At least we got a few good views and pictures sadly without nice light setting
Of course the Taj is really beautiful but also quite overcrowded and filled with scams which are often hard to avoid or identify.
Our guide brought us to some craftsmen who are showing how the marvel carving works and of course we were pressured afterwards to buy something. We wanted to give him just some money to leave us alone but he insisted to sell something so we picked a very cheap one which we actually didn’t want to buy. Afterwards the guide brought us to another craftsmen for jewelry but this time we insisted to leave and don’t buy anything. A too high tip in the end for this service from the guide was the cherry on top of it and we where happy to leave this place finally. Seems like a big rip of machinery when you are not all the time aware and got your guard up.
The drive back to Delhi appeared to be the same as the drive to Taj because the driver fell asleep all the time. 😂
After we arrived in Delhi he was VERY unpleasant with our tip which was actually a very good one of 1.000inr and he didn’t really earn it with a good service!
The drop of to the hotel was managed by some booking agent helper who also wanted to have some tip and got also too much because we didn’t had any small amounts left and he couldn't change of course 😏

This was one of the worst days so far and really shakes our opinion on the Indian people in Delhi. As a foreigner you can’t trust anyone and always need to assume to be ripped of

    Escape the madness

    October 6, 2022 in India ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

We took a flight to Bagdogra to continue our journey to Darjeeling and to escape the madness of Delhi.
Here in Bagdogra we also got our application for inner line permit for sikkim which we needed later on.
We met a Girl from Switzerland and shared a taxi to our next destination. The people are already quite different to Delhi and less money oriented and much more helpful

    Ups and downs

    October 6, 2022 in India ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We arrived in Darjeeling! The vegetation is so much different to Delhi and surrounding areas. There is more green and the big tea fields are nice to watch. Finally we see some mountains but sadly no view on Kanchenjunga.
Our hotel is described as deluxe room but sadly it is quite moldy. We can’t recommend the Muscatel hotel to stay!
Because it is bugging us so much we search for another option to eat dinner and we found a really nice restaurant with delicious food nearby! This cheers us up a little
Next days we change hotels to get a better well being for the next days and we discovered a few nice places like tiger hill for sunrise and the old trainstation.

Update: the new hotel is gorgeous and we found some nice new places!

Gangtok - Waiting for better roads

    October 10, 2022 in India ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

We arrived in Gangtok! The biggest city in sikkim. We start to enjoy the trip a lot more because the people are really kind and the mountainscapes are just mindboggeling. We try to organize some trips to the nearby lakes and figured out we need for everything a guide around here. might be a workaround to support the local economy but we don't mind. Our guide is a nice young guy, he shows us around and cares for permits which you need as a foreigner for nearly everything. We are able to visit a nearby mountain lake at 3.400m altitude and find some grumpy yaks. We enjoy the cold humid weather and some momos with milktea 🥰. Its amazing that you can buy these tasty little snacks at each corner. you will sit in a metal shack on plastic chairs but still think there is nothing better on earth right now.

Our plan is to try to reach a high altitude hotel which is hard to reach. We get the information that the roads are closed because of heavy landslides. So we wait and hope the roads gets clear soon.

In the meantime we discover gangtok and its food. There are dogs which are very friendly and we met our friend from switzerland again. what are the odds!

    Pelling - What a view

    October 15, 2022 in India ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

After a long taxi ride we arrive in pelling in a small hostel. We love it here!
Its a small town. There is nothing going on only a few houses, but the view is incredible! Our rooms window is in the direction of the big 8.000m mountains. The sunrises are insane!

We enjoy the food, the nearby temples and some strolls around the area. Its really relaxed. One day we decide to visit a famous waterfall nearby and the driver decided to take the "fast'" route. quite an adventure when there is no real obvious road 😅

    Bagdogra

    October 18, 2022 ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

End of the journey is approaching. We are happy and sad. Happy because we learned once again how much luck we have to live in a wealthy country. sad because we really like the discovery process of new countries. the beginnings are always hard and exciting and after some days you get used to it and find your own pace.

The drive back to bagdogra is a long drive, we take a shared taxi with 5 other people and its quite a fun ride in these big jeeps. as soon as we get closeby bagdogra we get overwhelmed with the heat, the traffic and the noises again. sikkim is such a nice calm place and the average city in india will get you insane 🤣
there are cows walking by people are driving everywhere even on the wrong side of the road. but eventually we arrive at our hotel for one night. you can for sure see bagdogra is a transfer city nothing to stay for long!

Our hotel is "special" somehow it was recommended and we are wondering us for what? Our bed is round and we got fancy ultraviolet light to switch on. We are not sure what these rooms are really used for, but its clean enough 🤣
