    D10- Lograno to Navarrete

    23–24 Mei 2024, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

    A late start today as we had a sleep in. Had a look around the cathedral then stopped in the square for a coffee. The walk today was pretty much all on hard concrete. As we made our way out of Lograno we took the path through parkland which seemed to go on forever, very nice parks, approximately 3km. We passed over the dam wall where lots of people were fishing and made our way around to the other side. We saw quite a few squirrels in the park near the dam. We made our way up a gravel path for a bit towards the highway and followed the road until we came to Navarrete. Although only a short walk today was pretty hard going on concrete. We booked into the Albergue de Perigrinos de Navarrete, casa Angel. We freshened up and went out to explore the town. We had our first Paella at a little restaurant near the church Inglesia Santa Maria de la Asuncion. We went into the church and put 1 euro into the box and this lit up the church. It was an amazing and thrilling experience and so very beautiful.Baca lagi

    D9- Los Arcos to Lograno 29km

    22–23 Mei 2024, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    First 8km today was fairly easy along a designated path with crops on either side of us. First village we came to today was Sansol, we didn’t stop here but continued on to Torres del Rio as was only 800m further on. Was quite a steep climb up through town and stopped for a coffee and sandwich at the Albergue Casa Mariela. From Torres del Rio to Viana there is a lot of steep inclines and descents and for this reason is known as the knee cracker. We pass more vineyards on the way into Viana. As we enter Viana the Camino goes through the centre of the old town. We stop for lunch and coffee in front of the church. There are many places to eat along this stretch in town and the architecture is just amazing. As we leave Viana we go down little alleys and roads. The walk from Viana to Lograno was about 10km, more vineyards and wild flowers along this stretch of road. Lograno is the capital city of the wine region Rioja. We finally reach Lograno and take the bridge over the River Ebro, widest river we have seen so far, and make our way to our accommodation, Pension Lograno. We have booked double rooms and only a few hundred metres from the streets of the old town and cathedral.Baca lagi

    D8- Estella to Los Arcos

    21–22 Mei 2024, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    We left our Albergue this morning through the streets of Estella and passed the amazing old church Iglesia de San Miguel. It is believed the church dates back to the 12th century. A few kms out from Estella we come to the Fuente del Vino where pilgrims can fill their shells with wine. We then mistakenly take the alternative route to Luquin which is the high road and less travelled. This route skirts the slopes of Monte Jurra through woodland paths. We eventually pass through the town of Luquin without seeing one local, the only other life we saw was pilgrims. A few more crops and more vineyards today and we still enjoy the wild flowers. A few kms from our destination today we are rewarded with another Camino angel - a mobile coffee and food van, our only refreshment stop today. There were tables and chairs all set out for our weary selves to take a break. Coffee and baguettes all round and we were on our way to Los Arcos. We stayed in the Albergue de Perigrinos “Isaac Santiago”. We were only metres from the town square and spent the afternoon with refreshments at the cafe.Baca lagi

    D7-Puente la Reina to Estella

    20–21 Mei 2024, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    We left Puente La Reina this morning looking back at the Historical bridge over the River Arga. Apparently the bridge was built for pilgrims in the 11th century. We take a right following the yellow arrows up along past the River Arga and then we start our climb upwards, there is good views back over Puente La Reina from up top. We stop at Mañeru for our first coffee of the day. We then continue and pass vineyards, olive trees and many wild flowers, the countryside is just so beautiful. The next village we go through is Cirauqui with its narrow cobbled streets and what a climb it was to get to the top. The church of San Roman stands at the highest point. We then make our way down the other side and make our way towards Estella. We stop at the village of Lorca for coffee and eat our picnic lunch (ham and cheese roll). We carried on to Estella, registered at Albergue Municipal de Perigrinos, showered then went out exploring. We picked up some pasta meals at the supermarket and had dinner at the Albergue.Baca lagi

    D6 - Pamplona to Puente la Reina

    Leaving Pamplona we could see the wind turbines in the distance that we were heading for. We stopped for a coffee just a few kms out from Pamplona at Cizur Menor. The trail up the mountain was long, muddy in parts but the wild flowers were beautiful. We seemed to climb forever up Alto de Perdon , so steep in places that bike riders were having trouble pushing their bikes up. At the top of Alto de Perdon we posed for photos at the iconic pilgrims monument - a steel sculpture of pilgrims through the ages. The peak can be quite windy at times, however the huge wind turbines that surrounded us were barely moving. After a quick rest and drink off we went on our descent which was very rocky and very steep but not as slippery as previous days. We passed through the small villages of Uterga, Muruzabal and Obanos then onto Puente La Reina (queens bridge) we walked through town admiring the beautiful buildings and ancient churches and just when we think we have arrived at our accommodation we walked over the bridge to find that our albergue was at the top of a long steep and massive driveway. We ended up having the pilgrims meal in the albergue that night as none of us were keen to do the hill climb again.Baca lagi

    D5 - rest day in Pamplona

    Rest day today, although we still did a fair bit of walking. We found a place just about 1.5km from city centre of Pamplona. Had a sleep in this morning then walked into town and had some coffee in a little cafe in the square. We then made our way to line up to get into the municipal hostel for 11 euros each. Dumped out packs on our beds then out to explore the town. We went to the Pamplona cathedral and had a look around inside, the photos don’t do it justice. The architecture is just amazing. We wandered around town taking in all the beautiful buildings, narrow streets and alleyways. We met up with Chris and Kate for a few wines and pinchos, very delicious. While we were wandering around we watched some of the cyclists and runners that were competing in a triathlon. There was lots of activity going on, bands playing in the street, groups of people sitting around on the ground enjoying each others company and lots of little bars with people coming and going.Baca lagi

    D4- Zubiri to Pamplona 21.9 km

    17–19 Mei 2024, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

    As we left town we went over the bridge over the Agra river and followed the road up the hill. We passed a magnesium plant on the right. There’s a fair bit of up and down today. About 2.8 km from Zubiri we came to Illarratz. There was no services here but as we left we past the old church/abbey on the right, Eskirolz/Illarratz Abbey built in the 12th or 13th century. At the 6.1km mark we came to Aquerreta/Akerreta. apparently the hotel in this town was used to film the way with Martin Sheen when he met Sarah and she gave him the nickname boomer. We walk a fair way today alongside the river, and with a little shower or two there is quite a few muddy paths to overcome. After 9.3 km we arrive at the town of Zuriain and as we head over the bridge we are greeted by the most fabulous cafe. The queues were huge but we all be enjoyed a hot coffee, the tortilla looked delicious but we had not long since had breakfast. After coffee we continue on up the hill and come to a road, where we have to walk on the edge of the road for 2 or 3 hundred meters then back onto the the river walk. There was a man selling different fruits from a cart for charity so I bought a huge mandarin, best I’ve ever tasted, so sweet and juicy. A bit more up hill climbs and slippery down hill sections then we came to a town on the outskirts of Pamplona. We bumped into Chris and Kate from New Zealand and bought some sandwiches and yoghurt at a nearby supermarket and had lunch in the park watching some kids play soccer. We went off track then as our accommodation was 1.5km before Pamplona. We seemed to walk the suburbs for ages then finally arrived at our hostel. We had trouble with accessing the room as there was no reception and everything was done remotely, different experience all together. The access card to the room finally worked and we freshened up and went next door the a little working man’s pub for a burger and refreshments.Baca lagi

    Day 3- Roncesvalles to Zubiri 21.9km

    16–17 Mei 2024, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

    A different awakening this morning, the brother singing in the abbey then walking through the dorms singing buenos diaz and bonjour. Lovely breakfast this morning in the restaurant, orange juice, coffee, toasted baguette with cheese slices and ham, apples and a beautiful tea cake which we wrapped and took with us for morning tea. Leaving Roncesvalles we take the woodland path for many kms, quite cool in amongst the trees but very easy walking. After 3km we come to Burguete, the first of many beautiful basque villages. A few more kms of beech forests and open countryside, and we cross a few streams. Just before we approached Viskarret/Biscarret we had to cross the river by stone blocks. We stopped and patted the horses as we entered town. After a few more Kms of woodland we had another climb but rewarded with beautiful views from the top. As we started our descent to Zubiri we were welcomed by a food and coffee truck. Time for a break from our packs and a few refreshments before attempting the dreaded last few kms. We had to watch every step during this last stage as many parts of the trail is eroded, very slippery rocks and uneven ground. Many close calls during this section but we manage to get to the bottom injury free. We then cross the bridge into Zubiri and after a shower we head to a little cafe for a few well deserved beers.Baca lagi

    Day 2-Orisson to Roncesvalles 18km

    15–16 Mei 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

    Leaving Orisson today we continued up the steep asphalt road. After climbing for about 3.8 km we passed the Statue of the Virgin Mary up on the hill. Not long after this we came across a Camino angel- a coffee cart in the middle of the mountains selling coffee, tea, bananas and cheese. We all enjoyed a well earnt coffee. Packs back on and we continued our climb to the Fountain of Roland, last chance to fill our water bottles in France. Then across the cattle grid into Spain, we are now in Navarre. Continuing onwards and upwards we passed many sheep and beautiful mountain horses and their foals. We were entertained by the chiming of cow bells hanging from the horses necks. At the peak of Col de Lepueder 1450m we came across a shelter used in emergencies if the weather turned bad. From up here we had wonderful views of the abbey at Roncesvalles and the town of Burgette in the valley below. Well you know how the saying goes, what goes up must come down. The descent was very steep in sections very rocky with loose pebbles and uneven surfaces. At one point we went through very picturesque forest and some very boggy ground. We arrived at the albergue and were given our beds, such a huge monastery to accommodate pilgrims. So many beds on one floor but divided up into four bed cubicles with your own locker for your pack and plenty of power points. Dinner tonight was soup and bread rolls for starters, followed by roast chicken or trout then ice cream for dessert. Again there was red wine to wash it all down.
    Weather today - clear skies at times with some sneaky cold winds. Hats and gloves on most of the day. Small hail shower after the border crossing.    Baca lagi

    Day 1 St Jean Pied de Port to Orisson

    14–15 Mei 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    Day 1. St Jean Pied de Port to Orisson. Short walk for our first day, however, short it was but not without its challenges. The road leaving St Jean was a constant climb. First 5kms on sealed paths and roads then just after Hunto we turned left at the fork onto a rocky path. This last 2.6kms was by far steeper than the first 5kms. The views on the climb today were stunning, mountain peaks poking through the clouds, homes and farms plotted in the valleys. Definitely a distraction from our heavy packs and burning legs and glutes. Dinner tonight was put on at the Albergue and was lovely, soup to start, pork and mixed bean dish for main followed by an almond slice. Bottle of red wine provided to wash it all down. They have a tradition at Orisson that every person stands up and says their name, where they are from and their reason for doing the Camino.Baca lagi
