  • D41- Lavacolla to Santiago de Compostela

    Jun 23–25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today we completed our Camino. We only had 10.3km to walk today. It was quite cloudy and foggy when we started our walk this morning and the walk into Santiago de Compostela takes us through an industrial area so nothing too exciting to photograph. Our mood lifted when we got to the Monte de Gozo, statue of two pilgrims high on the hill overlooking Santiago. We actually nearly missed it and another pilgrim had turned back and told us he missed the turnoff. We went cross country and up the hill and took our group photo. Shortly after that we came across a group of about a dozen guys all in the same gear and they had walked from Sarria to Santiago without a break, about 110km. They were from a running club and had walked all day and night. As we entered the city our excitement increased and strolling down the steps to the cathedral and we were welcomed by a young man playing the bagpipes. They had a number of these pipers playing everyday, all day, piping in the pilgrims. We took out photos in front of the cathedral then made our way to the pilgrims office to register for our Compostela. They were so efficient and only took a few minutes to register and receive our certificates. As we left the pilgrims office we bumped into pilgrim friends, JJ, Eric and Cheryl. They had come into Santiago the day before. Over 3000 pilgrims came into Santiago today and the place was packed as it was a festive day celebrating St John the Baptist and the locals light bonfires in any square they can find, have sardines and hot sausage on bbq’s, play music, sing and some even run through fire. As we sat around in the square we saw many familiar faces that we had encountered at some point over the last 40 days. We all went to the pilgrim mass, choir was amazing, we thought we might see the batafumeiro but we weren’t in luck, it didn’t swing today. What an adventure. Hasta la proxima!!!Read more

  • D 37- Portomarin to Palas de Rei 24.3 km

    Jun 19–20, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Longer walk today with a long steady incline. The rain stayed away until noon then was on and off until we reached Palas de Rei. We walked a little on designated paths beside the road today but most of the walk was away from roads and when we did walk along beside the road there was minimal traffic. Lots of farm communities with sheep, horses, different varieties of cows, beautiful veggie gardens and fields of corn. We are staying in the Albergue a Casina Di Marcello and having the Italian perigrinos meal tonight.Read more

  • D36- Sarria to Portomarin 21.5 km

    Jun 18–19, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Lovely walk through many farming communities, a few looked run down with many inhabitable, while others were quite prosperous. Many with cattle and beautiful vegetable gardens. It was a wet day today so pretty much had our ponchos on all day, although it did brighten up for the last hour or two so we were all dry by the time we got to Portomarín. The trail was busier today as many people start in Sarria and do the last 100kms. The Albergue Casona Ponte, where we are staying is quite new and very nice but there are hoards of young school leavers in the next dormitory to ours and so far they have been quite noisy.Read more

  • D35- Triacastela -Sarria via Samos 24km

    Jun 17–18, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

As we leave Triacastela this morning we had the option of the shorter route to Sarria via San Xil or the longer route via Samos. We turned left on the banks of the Oribio River towards Samos as we wanted to see the beautiful Benedictine Monastery. We passed through lush riverside forests with oak and chestnut trees. When we close to Samos there was an overlook where we were greeted with the grand view of the monastery. We walked around town to the monastery but the guided tour was not for another hour or two so we decided to walk on to Sarria as we had reserved our bed there. On our way from Samos to Sarria we stopped for refreshments at an interesting little albergue that had statues in the yard. When finding out it was Chris’s birthday she brought out a little cake and we all sang happy birthday. She made us tortilla, the best we had on our trip. She also made the best tarta de Santiago. About 1.5km from Sarria it poured down and I had to juggle looking at the map to our Albergue on my phone which was under my raincoat. We met up with John and the six of us went out to dinner in town together. We tried the pulpo which Galicia is famous for but I wasn’t excited by it.Read more

  • D34- Laguna de Castillo to Triacastela 2

    Jun 16–17, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Lovely walk in the mountains today. Started of with a 2.2km walk to the top of the mountain to O Cebreiro where we were walking in the misty rain and out of a gate at the top came a piper playing to us as we reached the top. We pretty much walked in the misty rain while walking down to Triacastela. We walked through many farming communities so we had to be careful where we were putting our feet as we shared the path with the livestock. We crossed into Galicia today. After the climb this morning there was still a few hills we had to go up so not entirely a flat walk today, more a little bit up and a little bit down then repeat.Read more

  • D 33- Trabadelo to Laguna de Castilla 16

    Jun 15–16, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Kind of a short day today, first half on the road through little towns then we had the climb to Laguna de Castilla. You can be taken up the mountain on horseback for 40 euros from Las Herrerias to O Cebreiro which is another 2.2km. The higher you climb the cooler it got but the rain did stay away which was wonderful. The wind was quite fresh and currently 12 degrees. We stayed at the only albergue here, Albergue la Escuela de la Laguna. Very nice rooms and wonderfully hot showers.Read more

  • D32- Pradela to Trabadelo - rest day

    Jun 14–15, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Albergue Lamas in Pradela was amazing, so much so we didn’t want to leave this morning. Anna made us so welcome and made sure Chris was taken care off as he wasn’t feeling very well. She made him some rice soup. Everything was made fresh with ingredients straight from her garden. She made the most delicious chestnut cake which we bought to take away as we had already had her homemade muesli for breakfast. We only had a short descent down the mountain into Trabadelo today. The rain decided to show up today so we made use of the wet weather gear we have carrying around. We are staying in the Albergue Camino y Leyenda tonight, very nice and comfortable in the attic with five single beds.Read more

  • D31- Camponaraya to Pradela 20.7km

    Jun 13–14, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Leaving Camponaraya we walked along the road for a bit then stopped for breakfast at Cacabelos. We then took to the hills again where we passed some vineyards which we hadn’t saw for quite some time. We are seeing more cherry trees now and have tried a few different varietes. On the descent we see the town of Villafranca del Bierzo. Villafranca is a lovely town, quite big in compared to other towns we have passed through. Coming into town we passed the castle then stopped at a cafe for lunch. There was a market on in Villafranca so we wandered through on our way out of town. After we crossed the bridge we took the path to the right and went on up the hill. It was a very steep and long climb and eventually we arrived at Pradela. Chris was quite unwell today and only just managed to get to the Albergue after many stops to lay down for a while on the way. Anna the host of our Albergue was amazing, she made special rice soup for Chris, made us all feel so welcome, and didn’t rush us out the next morning. We slept until eight as we were having a rest day and only going to the next town which was 3km away. Anna made a beautiful chestnut cake. The long climb up the hill was definitely worth it.Read more
