    Manteo, Roanoke Island

    May 31, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

After lunch we travelled a few miles to the National Park site on Roanoke Island to see the site of the Lost Colony. Fascinating story of a group that travelled form England and settled on the island in the time of Queen Elizabeth I, but eventually disappeared without any trace whatsoever. The only clue are the letters COA carved into a tree but no one knows what they mean. It's a real mystery, with some conjecture that they may have been assimilated with or been killed by the local Native American population. The museum was small but excellent and the Park Ranger gave a very entertaining talk about Roanoke Island through the centuries.
A shot of Ranger Mike, a real character and the beautiful painted ceiling in the small replica room from Elizabethan times.
Last shot is of an osprey nesting in the water on the way back from the island.
