  • Versailles, Kentucky

    September 9, 2014 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Drove along the Bluegrass Parkway to Versailles (pronounced Versails) to Irish Acres antique store and The Glitz restaurant. There were over 50 rooms in the antique store - it had everything imaginable in it, including two Persian rugs for $35,000. The restaurant lived up to it's name and we had a lovely lunch there among the glitz!! There were hundreds of tiny lights thoughout the three rooms, which were all decorated in a different style.Read more

    September 10, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Travelled to John James Audubon State Park. We have a great cabin in the Park - it looks rustic but has AC and WiFi, small kitchen & dining areas, separate bathroom and bedroom - very comfortable! Went for a 3 km walk through the woods - very invigorating although I was pretty tired afterwards! Had a look in the small but interesting gift shop. Looked for bald eagles near the Ohio River but couldnt see any. Returned to our cabins and had dinner and a few glasses of wine. This is a fantastic facility in a State Park.Read more

    September 11, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Went into Henderson to look at the Audubon bird sculptures around the town. Flags were flying at half mast and the lamp posts had yellow ribbons tied to them. We had lost track of the date and on asking why at the Post Office we were told it was to commemorate 9/11. Had lunch at the Golden Corral just so Norman could have fun saying we had eaten there!! It's an all-you-can-eat buffet with incredible choice and average quality food and an experience that won't be repeated! Went on to the John James Audubon Museum in the Park. They have the world's largest collection of his work and memorabilia and it's a most impressive museum, particularly as it's in a State Park and not in a big city. His work is incredibly detailed and his story one of many struggles and setbacks before finally finding success. Left the Park again and travelled just across the bridge into Indiana to Angel Mounds to see the museum and preserved mounds of the Mississippian Indians. Very interesting as they have recreated the story of this tribe from about 700 - 1400 AD purely from archaeological digs on the mounds. No other information about them remains. Another busy day packed with new discoveries.Read more

  • New Harmony, Indiana

    September 12, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Did the guided tour of New Harmony and so glad we did as we got to see inside some buildings we would not have otherwise seen. It's a very beautiful town with some buildings from the 19th century beautifully preserved. The town was built by German religious refugees who eventually moved to Pennsylvania. The Visitors Centre is a very modern building that was built 35 years ago but still looks ahead of it's time. New Harmony is well worth a visit and we could have stayed much longer to look around but had a three hour drive home so had to leave after we had lunch. We have had the best few days in Western Kentucky and Indiana!Read more

  • Bardstown, Kentucky

    September 13, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Much cooler weather today - it's actually been quite chilly this morning but expected to warm up this afternoon. Went to see the LOuisville Ballet perform Giselle at the Kentucky Performing Arts Centre in Louisville. What a great experience - the costumes were beautiful and the dancing fantastic. The company now has an Australian Artistic Director so here's hoping he continues to build on their success.Read more

  • New York City

    September 15, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We're now in The Big Apple! Our hotel is pretty good for NYC - has a small kitchenette and a good bathroom and a huge king-size bed. Went looking for Bens Deli, a kosher deli in the garment district. Had chicken soup with matzo ball and pastrami and corned beef on rye - typical Jewish food. Not a patch on what we've been eating over the past two weeks! There were stores everywhere in this area selling shelves and shelves of beads, buttons and trims of all colours and styles along with lots of fabric stores. Continued walking and came to Times Square. On the way back we found the theatre where Les Miserables is playing and will book tickets later. Found a liquor store and bought some wine to have in our room.Read more

  • New York City

    September 16, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We had planned to spend the day at the Metropolitan Museum and Central Park but it started to pour after breakfast and continued to rain until noon (which is precisely the time they predicted it would stop!) so we had to rethink our plans. We decided to go to Macy's to get out of the rain and had to buy an umbrella along the way! Spent a couple of hours looking around stores in the area. After a yummy lunch of soup at Dean and Deluca we bought a seven day Metro Card and caught the subway to Uptown and the Metropolitan. After catching the wrong train we managed to get off and get on the correct one and spent a few hours at the Met. I was REALLY disappointed to find that the Costume Gallery was closed AGAIN. It was closed last time we went to the museum too and all the other special exhibits I was interested in hadn't started yet. A very frustrating afternoon was spent at the Met but there was still so much to see that one shouldn't complain. It seemed there had been some big changes to the building there but it could also be our imagination! It is a truly awesome museum and one of the best we've ever visited. We returned to the hotel for the Social - free food and drinks every Tues, Wed & Thursday night. Met an English couple who gave us some tips about places to go and things to see so hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow. Went for a walk to Times Square after eating at the social. This city is like one on steroids - we've seen some fascinating sights and interesting people we're unlikely to experience anywhere else!! Somehow life seems cheap as you walk along and heaven knows how people drive in this city. We can't get over the traffic and how they weave in and out - goodness knows how much car insurance costs here! Haven't seen one accident yet though!
The third photo is INSIDE the Metropolitan and is the entryway into
the American Wing. It was absolutely stunning, with beuatiful lamp-posts but I couldnt fit them in.
