• Finca Caleras Chichavac and Los Tarrales

    February 7 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

On our second adventure we set out early from Antigua on a mission to look for the stunning Pink-headed Warbler in the Tecpan region of Chimaltenango.
Upon arrival to Finca Caleras Chichavac we got excelent looks on an American Kestrel and shortly after stumbled on a group of Central American Steller's Jay's. After a short walk down the trail we heard an unmistakeable chip call... the Pink-headed Warbler call. After a few minutes we finally got eyes on this fabulous regional endemic Warbler of Guatemala and Chiapas. Soon after we got sight of another striking Warbler, a male Golden-cheeked Warbler, high up on an Oak tree!

We had lunch in Tecpan, before we began our trip to Los Tarrales Nature Reserve in the pacific slope of the Atitlan Volcano.
After settling down in our rooms, we wandered arround the casona enjoying the birds by the feeders.
As day became dusk, the birds started flying to their favourite roosting spots. Parrots, Flycatchers, Orioles, Magpies and a Caracara, all settled in for the night.
But for some, the activity was just starting, Lesser Nighthawks began their hunt for insects at dusk.
