• Los Tarrales-La Isla

    2月8日, グアテマラ ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We set out to explore the birds of the La Isla trail early in the morning. As we drove to the location, we stopped at a spot that had fruiting Cecropia trees with what appeared to be a lot of bird activity. A flock of Orange-fronted Parakeets was feeding on said trees and we got excellent scope views!. We drove a little further and arrived to La Isla.
After watching a mixed-species flock of Vireos and Warblers we heard a familiar call, a Blue-crowned Chlorophonia! After a few minutes of scanning the trees, a female Chlorophonia was in the scope. Shortly after a male was spotted in a nearby tree and we got excellent views of this wonderful finch.
As we got to mid-morning, we had a box breakfast at a mirador, and, as the air got hotter, the raptors and vultures began to soar! White-breasted Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk and then, a pair of Great Black Hawks flew over a ridge and gave us a stunning view.

In the evening, as the air began to cool down, we set out on a short walk to La Rinconada. After a while we found a pair of Scrub Euphonias feeding. We continued on what appeared to be a quiet walk arround the trail, when unexpectedly, we stumbled on a deadly Fer-de-lance snake, with their fine camouflage to blend in perfectly with the dry leaves on the ground, we got the oportunity to observe this incredible reptile of the lowlands of Guatemala.
