    We arrived in Alaska!

We took a side trip on Hwy 37A to Stewart BC to check out Hyder Alaska. They claim that Hyder is the friendliest ghost town in Alaska. The town is pretty sad. Stewart, BC seems much nicer.もっと詳しく

Again, we found a great campsite with lake access. According to travel information, this lake is a must stop for fishermen.

We took our boats on the water. The fishing was fantastic. We caught about 8 trout in the first 2 hours.

Hello Mosquitos! And hello midnight sun. See the photos and notice the fish feeding.

Wow! Three lake front campsites, three days in a row, without reservations. We must be living right. We are getting spoiled. We are dreading going back to RV " Resorts" where we enjoy bad views, close neighbors, rotten toilets, and stoned camp hosts.

We have discovered our favorite Canadian wine that pairs well with our nightly seafood feast. Twist of Fate Pinot-Chardonnay. Only challenge is that it keeps evaporating during dinner and we ran out. Next liquor store is 2 days away.

Now this is truly a beautiful spot. I noted the distinction of Dave "enjoying" the water and Russ "swimming" in the water. Are you tiring of seafood yet? I was going to ask how many miles, but I note the "1k" in the trip notes. Quite the walkabout.

Stopped by for a tasty treat. The brewer asked us where we are from. When he discovered we were Americans he offered to trade his beer for American beers. We traded 6 American 12oz beers for 6 pints of Yukon Brewery beers.

Highway is like a roller coaster with potholes, frost heaves, and dipsey do's. Hard to maintain the speed limit and keep the trailer attached. Some parts are just gravel.

Got escorted through a forest fire. Smokey everywhere so sight seeing is not great.

Gas is $6 per gallon when you can find it and we are getting 8 mpg!

After driving nearly 3,000 miles, we made it to Alaska! This where Dave's original plan would have had us turning around and going back home.

US Customs was a breeze. They asked a few question and allowed us to enter.

    Deadman Lake Campground, Alaska

    2019年7月8日, アメリカ ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

We were able to score a FREE lake front campsite. The bugs are thick and have big teeth in this part of Alaska. This campsite has to be the loneliest site ever, with the nearest neighbor 200 ft away with our own private toilet. Due to remoteness of this site, we loaded the shotgun just in case a bear came to visit.

The campsite is located in a Taiga forest area, which is a black spruce forest devoured by insects, and burns often. The trees are very small. "Taiga" is Russian for "land of little sticks".

Note: We are now on Alaska standard time zone, which is an hour before Pacific and two hours before Mountain time. Having a hard time figuring out when it's time to go to bed.

This place is no park, has no lake, is a barren gravel parking lot next to a gas station and general store. With our $45, we get electricity and wifi, no water, no sewer. We have to pay an additional $6 each for a shower. I don't mean to complain, but I guess I am.

There is beauty in all things, but we really miss the beautiful BC Provincial Parks.

To get to this beautiful campsite, next to the water, we had to navigate 17 miles of treacherous road off the Glenn Highway. It was mortifying.

Fished in several small lakes in the area this evening. Dave released a 14 inch rainbow trout which was quickly picked up by a Bald Eagle. Pretty cool to watch. Took the Eagle 2 tries to get the fish.

Alaska is like an amusement park that never closes. We were out fishing until 11:30 pm.

Still experiencing a lot of forest fire smoke and haze.

    The Kenai RV Shuffle Game

    2019年7月16日, アメリカ ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Everywhere we went on the Kenai Peninsula, we encountered our fellow RV travelers. RVs are everywhere. When we first arrived, we were worried that we wouldn’t find a place to camp. Once we figured out the rules of the “Kenai RV Shuffle”, camping on the Kenai became easy.

The Rules of the Kenai RV Shuffle
    1. It is a simple of game of musical chairs.
    2. RVers break camp early and hit road and do their thing. They plug up the dump stations, attraction parking lots, grocery stores, gas stations, and every scenic view point.
    3. Everyone shuffles around until its time to find a place to camp. The camp selection window is between 2:00 and 5:00 pm. If you wait until after 5:00 all campgrounds will be full, and you will spend the night at some parking lot, which is like not getting a chair.
    4. The next day, it is repeat as required. Nobody spends more than one night in one place.
