  • Kinaskan Lake Provincial Campground

    5 de julho de 2019, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Again, we found a great campsite with lake access. According to travel information, this lake is a must stop for fishermen.

We took our boats on the water. The fishing was fantastic. We caught about 8 trout in the first 2 hours.

Hello Mosquitos! And hello midnight sun. See the photos and notice the fish feeding.

  • Boya Lake Provincial Campground

    6 de julho de 2019, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Wow! Three lake front campsites, three days in a row, without reservations. We must be living right. We are getting spoiled. We are dreading going back to RV " Resorts" where we enjoy bad views, close neighbors, rotten toilets, and stoned camp hosts.

We have discovered our favorite Canadian wine that pairs well with our nightly seafood feast. Twist of Fate Pinot-Chardonnay. Only challenge is that it keeps evaporating during dinner and we ran out. Next liquor store is 2 days away.

  • Entering the Yukon & the Alaska Highway

    7 de julho de 2019, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Finished our drive up Highway 37 and joined the Alaska Highway. Staying at Takhini hot springs tonight. Looking forward to a long soak in the pool.

Have seen lots of black bears along the way. First Grizzly sighting today along the highway. Russ refused to suddenly u-turn the 50 foot rig around so Dave didn't get a selfie. Maybe next time 😊Leia mais

  • Yukon Brewing, Whitehorse, Yukon

    7 de julho de 2019, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Stopped by for a tasty treat. The brewer asked us where we are from. When he discovered we were Americans he offered to trade his beer for American beers. We traded 6 American 12oz beers for 6 pints of Yukon Brewery beers.

We feel like the old time Yukon fur traders.

  • Alaska Highway Needs Work

    8 de julho de 2019, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Highway is like a roller coaster with potholes, frost heaves, and dipsey do's. Hard to maintain the speed limit and keep the trailer attached. Some parts are just gravel.

Got escorted through a forest fire. Smokey everywhere so sight seeing is not great.

Gas is $6 per gallon when you can find it and we are getting 8 mpg!

  • Crossed the Border into Alaska

    8 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

After driving nearly 3,000 miles, we made it to Alaska! This where Dave's original plan would have had us turning around and going back home.

US Customs was a breeze. They asked a few question and allowed us to enter.

For the next 17-ish days we will be enjoying Alaska.

  • Deadman Lake Campground, Alaska

    8 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

We were able to score a FREE lake front campsite. The bugs are thick and have big teeth in this part of Alaska. This campsite has to be the loneliest site ever, with the nearest neighbor 200 ft away with our own private toilet. Due to remoteness of this site, we loaded the shotgun just in case a bear came to visit.

The campsite is located in a Taiga forest area, which is a black spruce forest devoured by insects, and burns often. The trees are very small. "Taiga" is Russian for "land of little sticks".

Note: We are now on Alaska standard time zone, which is an hour before Pacific and two hours before Mountain time. Having a hard time figuring out when it's time to go to bed.

  • Tok, Alaska

    9 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Tok (rhymes with poke) is the crossroads of Alaska. Tok is known as the Sled Dog Capital of Alaska. The average winter temperature is -19 F.

Check out some of our old posts. We've been adding photos and our usual witty comments 😊Leia mais

  • Kenny Lake RV Park, Alaska

    9 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

This place is no park, has no lake, is a barren gravel parking lot next to a gas station and general store. With our $45, we get electricity and wifi, no water, no sewer. We have to pay an additional $6 each for a shower. I don't mean to complain, but I guess I am.

There is beauty in all things, but we really miss the beautiful BC Provincial Parks.

  • Ride The McCarthy Road

    9 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

We completed a 100 mile ride on the McCarthy Road through the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park. Dave gets to add another sticker to his National Park map. Yeah!

The road ends at McCarthy and the Kennicott River Footbridge. You can take a 5 mile shuttle to the famous Kennicott Glacier. We arrived too late for the shuttle 🙁. So Dave hiked the trail to McCarthy while Russ did his social media work.Leia mais

  • Lake Louise Campground

    10 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

To get to this beautiful campsite, next to the water, we had to navigate 17 miles of treacherous road off the Glenn Highway. It was mortifying.

Fished in several small lakes in the area this evening. Dave released a 14 inch rainbow trout which was quickly picked up by a Bald Eagle. Pretty cool to watch. Took the Eagle 2 tries to get the fish.

Alaska is like an amusement park that never closes. We were out fishing until 11:30 pm.

Still experiencing a lot of forest fire smoke and haze.

  • Camping on the Beach in Seward AK

    12 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

All set up at our new home for the next two nights. Beach front property that's a little on the rocky side. Great views.

Stopped by a Sockeye salmon weir on the way to Seward. The stream was completely full of salmon waiting to go upstream. Lots of salmon and really well fed seagulls.

Halibut fishing in the morning at 6:30. Chilling out drinking our camp beer for now.

  • Kenai Fjords National Park

    12 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Found a way to get into Kenai Fjords National Park by car and hiked to Exit Glacier. One more sticker for Dave's National Park map!

Russ has decided that glaciers move too slow for his taste and wants to get back to waterfall hikes 😊

Not sure why Russ is wearing a shawl 😂

  • Beyond Hope, Alaska

    14 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We drove beyond Hope to the end of the road and found a campsite at the Porcupine Campground. We decided to take this diversion after talking to other travelers. They told us tales of pulling out large "Pinks" out of Resurrection Creek.

We were successful and caught 6 Pinks (Humpies) out the river. Loads of fun.

The pinks taste really good 😊

  • Quartz Creek Campground

    15 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

Scored another lake front camp site! Shortest drive between destinations yet.

Before leaving this morning we fished for pinks in Resurrection Creek again. Tide was out so it was a little more challenging to get fish. Dave landed a nice one. Also managed to sink 2 of the hooks on his lure into his hand all the way past the barbs. OUCH!

Making "Salmon Candy" in the oven today with yesterday's pinks that have been soaking in brine all night. Kind of like fish jerky. Wishing we had brought the smoker.

  • The Kenai RV Shuffle Game

    16 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Everywhere we went on the Kenai Peninsula, we encountered our fellow RV travelers. RVs are everywhere. When we first arrived, we were worried that we wouldn’t find a place to camp. Once we figured out the rules of the “Kenai RV Shuffle”, camping on the Kenai became easy.

The Rules of the Kenai RV Shuffle
    1. It is a simple of game of musical chairs.
    2. RVers break camp early and hit road and do their thing. They plug up the dump stations, attraction parking lots, grocery stores, gas stations, and every scenic view point.
    3. Everyone shuffles around until its time to find a place to camp. The camp selection window is between 2:00 and 5:00 pm. If you wait until after 5:00 all campgrounds will be full, and you will spend the night at some parking lot, which is like not getting a chair.
    4. The next day, it is repeat as required. Nobody spends more than one night in one place.

  • "First Class Camping by the Sea", Homer

    16 de julho de 2019, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Arrived in Homer during torrential downpour. Staying at the well known Heritage RV Park located on the Homer Spit for next two nights.

The Spit is a peninsula that extends into the ocean. The Spit should have washed away long ago if man had not intervened and saved the land mass. Way to go man. Very cool place.

    https://www.homeralaska.org/the-homer-spit.html

We are right next to the "Fishing Hole" which is a man made lagoon that contains salmon, so we are told. Way to go man.

Looking forward to charter fishing for King Salmon tomorrow morning.
