• Caring about hippoes

    I stop for the night at lake Bassotu and try to hide from the wind. In the dark a nearby farmer comes over and tries to convince me to be afraid of hippoes. He complains that they sneak into his maize field at midnight and devour his precious crops. I tell him to plant additional crops here where I stay at the waterfront so that the hippoes avoid his other fields. They also have a hard life. The water level rose within the last years and the grassy areas which served as their dinner disappeared. But he prefers chasing them away with his machete.
