There is a lot to spend time with at Visit Wilderness! One day we heat up the sauna really well and chase each other naked over the fluffy moss through the bush down to the river for a cooling-down. One other day we heat up an outdoor pizza oven made from boards of slate rock. Britta brought her mastery of handling the baking process to perfection within her many stays here. I am very well impressed of the outcome and the crispness of our tiny dough babies! My favourite activity though is to watch Bernd working hard all day, cutting trees into handy pieces, while I sip on my coffee. I totally would like to assist him but he does not allow me to use the chainsaw and, anyway, he thinks that I am a lousy IT guy and that IT guys are not meant to get dirty 😉. Oooh, what a wonderful time we have here!

Aiiii! Finally I get my snow shoe experience! Up here between 800 and 900 m the sun is burning and we have a lot of fun in the melting snow! Hillestadheia seems to be a pretty frequented touristic region – especially around Easter – but I am astonished not to find any of the winter trails in OpenStreetMap. Mapping of this region would be a nice playground for young and motivated interns 😉.
We first start off following a hiking trail to Lindeknoten hill and after an extended lunch break with awesome views we progress cross-country-wise further north to neighbouring "peaks" on snow shoes. Endless carpets of smooth and juicy snow, wonderful! Apparently, we are almost alone here and do not meet anybody, as most Norwegians tend to be cross-country skiing on the more shaded, northern slopes with drier snow. Good for us! While returning, Britta breaks through the melting snow cover and sags into a small stream underneath, hihihihi. With wet feet and a huge grin on my face we end the trip and reach the car as the last guests of this shining plateau.Read more

Exactly four years ago I already hiked up this beautiful path to the waterfall with Britta and some other friends in thick, crispy, hard snow. Now, aren't these pics here the proof for an obvious climate change 🤪?
Not all of us feel well today but we are strong, enduring, motivated and hanging on. On top where river Dalsåna transits into Rjukanfossen waterfall we make a nice open fire barbecue event and Timur discovers a whole bunch of crossed vipers while searching for wood. Around 5 we find, all in different shades of grey! They apparently came out after the winter to enjoy the first rays of delightful sunlight, such as we are doing today. In winter the waterfall itself is not overwhelmingly spectacular but the opposite, steep hillside is! All the falling water's mist accumulates to fancy ice structures on the opposing slope and lets your mind roam freely. Britta is very keen on guiding us well on the slippery way back down to our car. A true mountain goat she is!Read more

Kim from Visit Wilderness built this new hut "Pluto" two years ago on a hill (217 m) just 10 minutes by foot from the camp. In one go Kim also marked two new hiking trails leading up this hill. Franziska wishes to spend a night here in the cold and, yes, how could I resist such a request?? Nothing better than that! We have a private evening at a small bonfire, with a glass of red wine and jump into our sleeping bags shortly after midnight. Franziska combines her rather thin synthetic bag with my thin down bag while I use my other thick down sleeping bag. We both spend a cosy, warm night at around -5 °C. The morning starts with a coffee in the sun. Paradise! Let's go for a hike now!Read more

Others would not call this a proper "via ferrata" but for some of us this is our first taste of smooth climbing experience with great views over the low hills around Åmli. Britta knows this region very well as she has been a tekking guide for many years here. Now she leads us up the slope where we find ourselves savouring a Gipfelschnaps, relaxing in the sun and searching for Easter eggs in the bush. What a lovely day! What lovely company!Read more

Our first day trip starts at an old mill. I hoped to find this fjell covered in a deep snow storm in order to be able to use my snow shoes in realistic environment. But having the sun glowing above our heads the whole day is also a nice reason for us to play 😃. Back down at the river we planned to light a fire but the strong wind combined with the drought of the last weeks is a very dangerous combination! Starting from April 15th there will be a ban of fires anyway 🤷♂️.Read more

After arriving late in the evening Franziska and I stroll around Tverrstøyl village to get a first idea of what we got involved with. We have been greeted warmly here by Hanka and Bernd – owners of Visit Wilderness camp. I met them 2010 for the first time and am visiting them my third time now. Later in the afternoon Britta arrives with Timur. The next days we enjoy every minute with either not doing anything, knitting, chilling in one of our homely and warm huts or with eating. I will be having baked three juicy sour dough breads until the end of the trip. Hell yeah!Read more

I am missing the morning mosquitoes around my toes. And the people give bewildered looks when I thank them with "asante sana" 🤔.
