    Getting ready in fits and starts

    So much left to do. Right now I’m concentrating on putting the ditch bag together. Tomorrow I need to hunt down a solar phone charger and supplies to make a water still (to distill seawater into something drinkable in case of, gulp, an emergency😳). I have no idea what David is responsible for. Let’s hope it’s the watertight-ness of the boat.Baca lagi

    The solar panels are installed, and the new MFD is installed. We started loading to boat tonight but I can’t put anything away because it’s all still a mess! We will clean it up in the morning, finish loading, and look at the weather. Right now they are predicting a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms from around 11 am to 8 pm 😫 AND I just found out that it’s bad luck to start sailing on a Friday!! Don’t you think someone could have mentioned this several weeks ago?!?!?! So, I’m still not sure if we will be going tomorrow.

    Also, I met some fellow sailors tonight who said that up in the Bay of Fundy (the Canada coast) it stays light nearly all night! That will be interesting.    Baca lagi

    Set sail

    We set sail this morning. It’s hot, with little breeze, so only motoring now. We decided to leave today because the thunderstorm threat for today was revised, and are supposed to be only tomorrow. We will go to Marblehead and moor near a friend of David’s. It’s nice to be on our way!! Although still lots of unpacking to do yet!Baca lagi

    David and I had dinner with David’s former colleague, Don, and his wife Noelle. They gave us the rundown on all the good spots to stop in on the Maine coast!!

    On the coast of Rockport.

    Rockport MA

    Made it to Rockport. We were able to sail for an hour or so this morning in 10-13kn winds, before the wind died to nothing and we moored instead. The rain started, and gradually became more windy, up to 32 knots. The swells were only 1 to 3’ but were against us for a good part of the way, leaving me feeling a little green around the gills! Our docking situation is an unusual one, as you can see by the picture. We have to pull the boat in to the pier to climb up the ladder! (The yellow line is an electrical one we ran to plug into the marina’s power.)Baca lagi

    Wentworth By the Sea

    No wind today, so we had to motor all the way up from Rockport. Leaving that “dock” (more like a pier) was almost as harrowing as it was coming in, but we did it with no mishaps.

    We made it in about 6 hours, under sunny skies. It was hot!! At one point David slowed the boat down to 2 kn and jumped off the bow of the boat and floated to the stern. I asked him what he wanted me to do if he couldn’t catch up with the boat ( I was at the helm)(because we had to get to Portsmouth to see friends of ours for dinner). He said, “I hope you’ll turn around and come back and get me!!” Okay, whatevs.

    David saw 2 seals and one (what he claims was a) Minke whale. I sent in the sighting to the Whale Alert app (our first sighting, Hannah!) so I hope they don’t come after us if it turns out to have been a seal.😳

    Had a great time with dear friends, Angela and Andrea, tonight. We will probably stay here tomorrow night too, because David wants to fix the pressure regulator on the propane tank.    Baca lagi

    Since we stayed an extra day in Portsmouth, David and I went to (West Marine for an unfruitful trip 😤 and happened upon) the USS Albacore, one of the first experimental torpedo shapes of US submarines which changed the entire design strategy for submarines in 1953. Unbelievably confined space and every single thing had a function.Baca lagi

    The Day's Happenings

    We had a great sail today. We set off around 10, on the motor, but around noon the wind came up (eventually to 13-14kn) We sailed along with the motor for a while (we can keep up our speed (6kn) without using the motor as much— reduces gas consumption) but finally were able to shut the motor off and just sail for a few hours. We were able to make between 4-6kn, and it was great to see the sails full.

    Our big excitement for the day was seeing a shark!! We still don’t know what kind. I’m posting the picture, so let us know what you think it is. Please do not say “a lobster pot,” because it definitely was not!! It could be a whale, but 1) it was sniffing at David and 2) the dorsal fin was not as floppy as a whale’s. It had a light underside and dark topside.    Baca lagi
