    Plato Lodge 985km

    27 sierpnia 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Slow drive to Plato Lodge 40km from Augrabies Falls.

Passed Khi Solar One (KSO) a solar power tower solar thermal power plant, located outside Upington. Khi Solar One is 50 megawatts, and will is the first solar tower plant in Africa. It covers an area of 140 hectares.

Abengoa claim it is the first thermal solar tower plant in Africa and the first tower plant to achieve 24 hours of operation with solar energy only.

KSO solar field is made of more than 4,000 heliostats, totaling up to 576,800 m2 of mirror surface, focusing solar energy on a boiler located on top a centralized 205-metre-high tower. KSO uses a superheated steam cycle that should be able to reach a maximum operating temperature of 530 °C.

Stopped at the famous Pienk Padstal to stock up on Mebos and Rooibos Tea.

  • Papkuilsfontein

    4 września 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Flowers around Nuewoudville extremely sparce.

Nice campsite on the Papkuilsfontein, with gas shower and proper flush loo. A change from the last 2 nights where we only had an Enviro Loo and nothing else 😨

Glad we only had 1 night here, because the Oomie in the camp stayed his generator at 09h00 and it was still running when we left at 10h00. I guess he either had lots of gadgets to charge or he was making cappuccino!

  • Calvinia to Tankwa

    4 września 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The drive through Calvinia on a Sunday was uneventful to say the least. In fact it seemed like the whole town was hibinating!

To my surprise, a few people were at the local Spar, which closed at 13h00, doing some last minute shopping.

We took the road from Calvinia to Middlepos then came down the Gannaga Pass into the park. There were still flowers on the road at the top, but hardly any in the park.

  • Langkloof Campsite #1

    5 września 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

At the end of a "dead-end" we got to our 1st night's accommodation. An old farmhouse once stood here, which has now been modernised with gas geysers, flush loo's and very civilised showers and kitchen facilities.

After what started as a very warm evening in the rooftop tent, from 02h00 to be exact, I want sure whether we were going to land up in Calvinia or Beaufort West. The wind howled incessantly, stopping every 10 minutes or so, just enough for one to dose before starting up again.

So glad we'll be in fixed accommodation for the next 3 nights!

  • Langkloof - the story

    5 września 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

After very little sleep, we got up to huge cloud banks and even a couple of drops of rain....

While having breakfast, a bakkie came ambling along. What we thought were the next campers, turned out to be the grandson and nephew of the man who had owned built the original farmhouse which now stands in tatters next to the new kitchen and bathroom.

Johann, introduced himself to us and over a cup of coffee told us the story of Langkloof farm.

The old farmhouse to the left of our campsite, was originally owned by his grandparents, and the house where we camped belonged to his uncle who lived there until about 20 years ago. They were sheep farmers who lived in the area for many years.

He told us stories of how they as kids used to slide down the rocks on pieces of "Botterboon" trees, much to the horror of their parents as the these trees left a nasty red residue which wasn't easy to remove from their clothes! They also used to walk up into the kloof to hunt, taking no water along in temperatures often in excess of 40 degrees! When they returned, and reached the river, they simply swept away the frog slime from the top of the water and drank deeply to rehydrate! Crazy ...

He also told us how some of his uncle's Boerbokke roamed into the kloof opposite the farm and bred there. They became totally wild, were extremely hardly and rather aggressive.

About 2km from our campsite are the remnants of his grandparent's farm. The windmill still turns, bringing precious water to the water basin, once used my their livestock, now only used by the birds and I guess occasionally by some of the game in the area. Under a couple of Bluegum trees are 3 graves which belong to some of his relatives.

All in all, an interesting morning.

  • Tankwa Guest house

    5 września 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Although a welcome relief from the howling wind, the accommodation is a little "out of the ordinary" for the area.

What was once a Lucern farm, the old farmhouse had been turned into a 3 bedroom shared facility. Each room has it's s own bathroom, but the communal area's are shared.

There's even an enclosed courtyard with a swimming pool!

  • Embizweni Cottage

    7 września 2016, Afryka Południowa ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

About 25km from the nearest human beings... Deafening silence, apart from the odd bird tweeting or a bug buzzing.

Although the sign at the entrance to the house was a little daunting, the house is very comfortable and had everything you need. Solar lights, gas geyser and gas fridge and lovely warm beds 😊

Apparently this is also the area in the park when the local lions frequent, although we didn't see or hear them. Only found some footprints.
