    Singapore Airlines SQ11 | NRT/SIN
    Business Class
    Boeing 747-400
    Lounge: ANA Lounge

I was stoked to be on a SQ B747 after all these years, and on the upper deck to boot! As it turned out, this was my last flight on a SQ 744 as the fleet was retired not long after. It did bring back a lot of good memories though!Read more

  • Involuntary Layover in Perth

    August 7, 2009 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

When I booked my flights to Australia with a five hour layover in Perth, I contacted Aunty Alice to ask if we could meet for coffee. We met for coffee, but we also underestimated the traffic going back to the airport. I ended up missing my flight... a first for me!

At Perth Airport, I managed to sweet talk the agent into rebooking me onto the next morning's flight to ADL without charge. It turned out that he was an ex-Singaporean and a former Singapore Airlines staff, and all I needed to do was tell him that I was switching my loyalty from Star Alliance to OneWorld.

I stayed with Aunty Alice at her apartment and had dinner with her boyfriend Kevin, whom I was meeting for the first time. The next morning, Kevin drove me to PER.

  • Adelaide

    August 9, 2009 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

I don't recall much from this trip other than lots of good meals, and some sightseeing; I recall visiting Hahndorf and McLaren Vale. I just kept to one footprint as I have more detailed footprints from the same places from later trips.

I also got to meet Trixie's friends who are mostly a mix of immigrants from Singapore and Malaysia. I also reconnected with Jo, her mother, who I knew from London. Jo relocated to Adelaide after Trixie moved there.

  • Sydney to Singapore

    August 11, 2009 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

    Qantas QF31 | SYD/SIN
    Economy Class
    Airbus A380-800

This was my first and, to date, only A380 flight. The flight was delayed by five hours due to late arrival of the inbound aircraft. As the A380 fleet was small at the time, QF didn't have the option of utilizing idle A380s to operate the flight.

As this was my first A380 flight, I was obviously in awe. But, it wasn't the most comfortable flight. The recline motion for the seat wasn’t smooth; rather, it reclined in a sudden movement. I hit the guy behind me when I reclined, and the guy in front of me - who was heavy - also hit me when he reclined. I also couldn't figure out QF's footrest design.

  • Meetup with Shiori & Yoshi

    August 17, 2009 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

This was my first long layover in Tokyo. I was nervous considering how long it took to get from Narita to Tokyo, but I was excited about the prospect of a new travel adventure - something I had sorely missed.

I took the Narita Express to Tokyo Station and then I made my way to the Peninsula Hotel where I had arranged to meet Shiori and Yoshi for lunch. As I was a little early, I wandered around Hibiya Park which was near the hotel. I walked back to the Peninsula at the appointed time and had a pleasant lunch with Shiori and Yoshi.

  • Imperial Palace East Garden

    August 17, 2009 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

After lunch, I wandered around the Imperial Palace East Garden, before making my way back to Tokyo Station and back to Narita.

This layover renewed my sense of adventure which had been dormant for too long. I realized I still had the mojo to figure my way around strange countries where I don't speak the language, and it awakened in me a new sense of wanderlust.

With specific respect to Tokyo, this trip gave me the confidence to venture out to Tokyo on my layovers, and, before long, I started to deliberately schedule long layovers just so I can explore!
