    Lounge: The Deck

CX292 landed in a foggy Hong Kong and docked at Gate 9. I had a short layover, and my priority was to have a shower as I had researched and learned earlier that the lounge at my next layover (Taipei) did not have showers. Looking at the departure boards, I saw that my connecting flight was scheduled to depart from Gate 2, so I decided it would be prudent to go to closest lounge - The Deck - to shower.

Cathay Pacific has repurposed The Deck to be a temporary first class lounge while The Wing is being renovated. I didn’t spend much time there other than to shower and grab a bowl of wanton noodles from the Noodle Bar. I did note that there was table service per the norm with first class lounges. After eating, I made my way to the gate.

Service on CX488 was more in line with what I have experienced from Cathay Pacific in the past. As a OneWorld Emerald, they took my meal order first, and I was the first to be served on my aisle after the special meals. I was also addressed by name by all crew, and the Cabin Service Manager Loretta took the time to chat with me. The dim sum breakfast and the wanton noodles from the lounge really hit the spot as I was craving Chinese food after two weeks of southern European fare.

    Cathay Pacific Lounge

Arriving into Taipei, I made my way to the Cathay Pacific Lounge where I would spend my layover. The Cathay Pacific Lounge was large; as a major outstation, they had all the features of their homebase counterparts, including a Noodle Bar, but no showers. I made a beeline there and happily tucked into dan dan noodles and a fried glutinous rice. As much as I enjoyed the food in Spain and Italy, I was pleased to have Asian food.

The three hour layover passed quickly and I made my way to board B-HNI, an old school Boeing 777 non-ER -300 stretch, complete with 2-3-2 seating in Business Class. There aren't many of these classics left in service.

The cabin crew on this flight were great, and they performed their inflight service flawlessly. The crew on my aisle took my meal order first, but they served the meals front to back. Cabin Service Manager Christie also came by to chat with me.

    JAL First Class Lounge

I spent my three hour layover at the JAL First Class Lounge. While the HKG and TPE layovers were noodle-focused, at the JAL lounge I gratefully partook of their sushi bar after a refreshing shower. This time, one of my favorite sushi - red snapper or tai - was one of the seasonal offerings.

When it came time for boarding, I made my way to the gate and took my exit seat, at which time the cabin crew confirmed I had an empty seat next to me. Yes!!! This crew was fun and engaging, and the inflight manager enthusiastically welcomed me back. I wonder if I had flown with her before... if so I guess I made an impression!
