Erappe 16 - Sahagún und El Burgo Ranero

      30 September 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

      Albergue La Morena

      8 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

I chose this albergue based on the reviews I found on the guide I got in the Camino Forum and gronze.com. Jan just followed me.
We arrived a bit late, and I was a little worried that it might be full, as we didn't have a reservation (I have made very few reservations if any in the last week).
I was very surprised to see that we were the first ones, and as of 5.45pm, the only ones here! It's possible that many pilgrims would have gone to the next village, just over 3k away.
The albergue is small but beautiful, looks brand new, and has very thoughtful details, like privacy curtains for every bed, good quality cotton bed sheets and pillowcases (most albergues provide disposable ones), power point and reading light in every bed, and a free water bottle and piece of dark chocolate for every guest. As good as a hotel.
There are 2 sets of normal bunk beds, where access is from the long side of the bed. All other sets are like in a box, with access on the feet end of the bed. It's a good design for space saving, but my opinion of the place wouldn't be the same if I had to sleep in one of those.

      Another day in the meseta

      8 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today I ended up hanging with Jan all day again. We started the day with the longest stretch between villages in the whole Camino, 17k.
There was a food truck at the halfway point, and we stopped for a snack. We continued to Calzadilla de la Cueza, where we had smoothies at a cafe on the edge of the village, with a beautiful meseta view from the shade (see pic).
Then we continued to the final destination for the day, Ledigos.
The route was fairly flat, 25k total, mostly on a gravel track.

      Bercianos del Real Camino

      5 Mei, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

I’m halfway done!!! There is more Camino behind me than in front of me. Shortly after the halfway point rain started pouring on me and I had a very wet last 8km or so. My albergue tonight is teeny tiny and I’m feeling ready to arrive in León in a couple of days.Baca lagi

      Terradillos to Bercianos

      8 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Left for Bercianos at approximately 8 AM. 25 km's. Passed through Sahagun

ceremoniously is said to be the halfway point. Thank goodness for real time. I am way past half. The albergue is run by the church. Very tight but very clean 4 bunk rooms. Visited the church. Walked past a car, the model name was Zoe... Will send the picture to my granddaughter. Met a young African living in Spain. Originally from Cameroon. He and I had made eye contact a few times in the past. He was so happy each time he saw me. He asked me my name and would clap, showing appreciation. What was so remarkable is that he slept on a sleeping mat next to the trails each night. At the stop, where we took the photos, he asked if I wanted a short video. He gave me a small stone. He was collecting rocks along the way. Very nice young man.Baca lagi

      Carrion de los Condes

      26 Jun 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

From Leon we chose to backtrack to Carrion de los Condes in order to stay at the Albergue Santa Maria which is known for its singing nuns.

Got there just in time, enjoyed a small “concert” along with about 20 other pilgrims, who all participated in singing and sharing.

Afterwards I attended mass and received a pilgrim’s blessing (hands on head), very special.

And after mass we joined a small group of fellow pilgrims, many of whom we’ve encountered multiple times—including the Colemans and Sean’s friend Brandon. And in walked Lucas and Maria from Brazil! What a joy!

Sean had the pilgrim menu and his first course was enough spaghetti for a regular dinner! I went a la carte and enjoyed grilled octopus—a specialty in this region. A big enough group that it was impossible to hear everything going on, but still one of our favorite meals on the Camino!

      Onward

      23 Jun 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

On the Camino we frequently see yellow arrows marking the way. Sometimes fellow pilgrims take the time to build stones or sticks into arrows, too.

I find it heartwarming. Sometimes it is just the thing we need: a nudge of encouragement. Keep going!Baca lagi

      Meseta espagnole à 100 %

      20 Mei 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Buen Camino

    • Carrión de los Condes to Ledigos

      4 Oktober 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

With about 23km to cover today we rose early and walked out of Carrión by head torch a little after 7:00. It was pleasant walking in the cool 8 degrees C in the cloudless pre-dawn.

It wasn’t long before an issue John had experienced yesterday returned: an increasing involuntary lean to the left and slight muscle weakness. After 16km he called it a day at Calzadilla de La Cueza and caught a taxi to our albergue in Ledigos. Kevin walked the final few kilometers. The problem is almost certainly dehydration which will be easily fixed but some expert advice in Sahagún tomorrow should help.

One of the pleasures of the Camino is meeting and chatting with people from all over the world and encountering them again and again further along the Way. We are fortunate that the common language among the pilgrims is English. It is not commonly spoken by the Spanish people but they are very forgiving of our efforts.

The Meseta from Burgos to Leon (about 180km) is renowned for challenging pilgrims with its never ending featureless landscape. It is Spain’s wheat bowl with 40C+ temperatures in the summer. We found it less featureless and more interesting than some of the wheat growing areas of Australia. However the ever constant sun, even in the autumn has been wearing.

      Alt aber charmant

      12 Oktober 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C
