  • Hucklberry Mountain Tour

    On our first full day at Glacier National Park we went on a Red Bus tour of Huckleberry Mountain and the West Glacier area. The beginning of the tour included views of forest regrowth near McGee Meadow (Fen). As we stopped to view the meadow a butterfly decided to land on nearby flowers.Read more

  • Huckleberry Mountain

    Our next stop was Huckleberry Mountain. In July and August, huckleberries grow in abundance here. The berries are favored by the park's population of bears, which congregate in the area to get a sweet meal.Read more

  • Belton Bridge

    Formerly known as Belton, the town of West Glacier once served as a major gateway to the Park. Beginning in the 1920s, Park visitors would travel here by train and then cross into the Park over Belton Bridge. It went out of major use in 1938, but made a brief comeback in 1964, when severe flooding destroyed other bridges throughout the area. It again served as the main westside entrance to the Park until 1966, when another bridge was constructed in West Glacier. The central concrete arch is all that remains of the original bridge.Read more

  • River Rescue Practice

    While touring Belton Bridge, a team from Great Northern was practicing river rescues. The top cause of death at Glacier is drowning. Being glacial runoff, waters within the park are extremely cold, registering around 40 degrees. At these temperatures hypothermia quickly sets in, which eventually leads to drowning.Read more

  • Views from the West

    Near Belton Bridge we saw a glacial rock. The ridges on the rock were formed thousands to millions of years ago. Also near this area is the Glacier National Park sign, where mom and I got a picture together.Read more

  • Mountain Views

    As our tour continued, we traveled on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. From the road we had several views of the various mountain peaks that run through the Park.

  • Trail of the Cedars (1 of 2)

    From the Going-to-the-Sun Road we hiked on the Trail of the Cedars. Here, we walked through the Glacier National Park Rainforest, which includes Western Red Cedars, Western Hemlock, and Skunk Cabbage.

  • Avalanche Gorge

    The Trail of the Cedars crosses over Avalanche Gorge and Avalanche Cascades. These waters originate from Avalanche Lake, which receives meltwater from Sperry Glacier.

  • Sacred Dancing Cascades

    Back on Going-to-the-Sun Road we stopped at Sacred Dancing Cascades. The name derives from sacred ceremonies held in the area by the Kootenai Indians. Prior to European settlement, the Kootenai, Blackfeet and Salish tribes inhabited the lands in and around the Park.Read more

  • Interior of Lake McDonald Lodge

    The Lodge's lobby is a large open space containing a massive fireplace marked with inscriptions done in several Indian languages. The lobby also features hanging lanterns, which are reproductions of Kanai work found in the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton Lakes National Park, the Canadian portion of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.Read more

  • Wildlife

    During and after our tour we saw a variety of wildlife, including a little winged friend and a couple of White Tailed Deer grabbing dinner from the front flower garden at Lake McDonald Lodge.

  • Sunset at Lake McDonald

    At the end of the day we returned to Lake McDonald Lodge for a ranger talk on the "Casualties of Time", which talked about the features/people that have been lost due to the arrival of Europeans and a changing climate. Being near sunset, we were treated to amazing views of Lake McDonald and the cascades running along the Lodge.Read more

  • Welcome to Alberta

    Today, we traveled to Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. In 1932, Glacier and Waterton became the world's first International Peace Park when the governments of Canada and the United States agreed to link the two Parks. Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park has been a World Heritage Site since 1995.Read more

  • Waterton Village

    Within Waterton Lakes is the Village of Waterton. Here, we hiked along the Townsite Loop Trail, which offered views of Chutes Cameron Falls, Upper Waterton Lake and nearby mountain peaks.

  • Prince of Wales Hotel

    The Village of Waterton is also home to the Prince of Wales Hotel. Built between 1926-1927, the hotel was the last of the lodges constructed by the Great Northern Railway within Waterton-Glacier. It was named for the then Prince of Wales, who would later become Kind Edward VIII.Read more

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road (1 of 4)

    Completed in 1932, Going-to-the-Sun Road is the only road that traverses Glacier National Park. Due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, most of the Road is closed between mid-October and mid-June. This was the case during our trip to the Park. Although the mid-portion of the Road was closed to vehicular traffic, foot and bike traffic was allowed to a certain point. We took the opportunity to hike out a couple miles to see beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.Read more
