    What is This Camino Thing?!?

    26 мая 2023 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

The Camino de Santiago is several different routes through Europe that all converge on Santiago de Compostela in NW Spain (Province of Galicia).

I'll be walking the Ruta Frances, which begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, southern France.

From there the Way traverses nearly 800km (just shy of 500 miles) through mountains, villages, cities, wheat fields, forests, streams... You get the picture. The journey will be primarily a 'hut-to-hut' experience and I will be staying in common living spaces (like youth hostels) for most nights, so I am carrying about 15lbs of stuff. It surprises me how quickly the weight adds up!

I expect I'll take about 45 days. I may Forest Gump it and just keep ramblin' on... Let's see!

As I review everything I'll be carrying for the next two months, I find myself tempted to shed some weight, somehow, or add another *something* that my fears are telling me I'll need.

I found myself appreciative of whomever planted rows of trees along the sidewalk... Cool and sun dappled is worlds ahead of brightly hot concrete, for walking.Читать далее

But I appreciate San Francisco's quirky weather.... It makes the sunny days more special.

I'm happily seated with a friendly person (Leticia) next to me. Slightly inebriated, tbh, which I know is suboptimal for a 12hr flight. I'm hoping that the absurdly overpriced burrito I bought will be *amazing* when I get to it in ~6 hrs.Читать далее

    1st Med

    30 мая 2023 г., Испания ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Jetlag wasn't kind to my sleep last night.... So when 2 people arrived at about 5am to our hostel and woke me (or roused my barely sleeping brain) I decided to trot down to the Mediterranean to watch sunrise.

I struggled with trying to get a bike - it was too much for me to grok pre-coffee - and settled for the Metro.

Aside: metro service here is excellent.

I didn't see sunrise proper but am sitting by the water 's edge enjoying an empenada and the sounds of gulls and water-on-rocks.

I'm so glad I squeezed this detour in!
This is my first time touching the Mediterranean Sea... Feels wet. :)

My 16hr visit to Barcelona is entirely too brief. I look forward to a return when I am not flogged from a 12hr transatlantic flight and can explore more.

    1st Gaff.... T2

    30 мая 2023 г., Испания ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

It's good to pay attention to details like Terminal One vs Two

    It matters. :)

    Need coffee.

Easy fix w a shuttlebus ride... But it's a long ride. In the end I made the flight but it was closer than I like to get. The Iberia air app told me we had a delay but we didn't..... It would be nice if they were accurate.

Adding jaunt to the Med was risky for time, but worth it.

    France!

    30 мая 2023 г., Франция ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

The bus from Bilbao has been very pleasant so far.
I am glad that I got a seat in front as the scenery has been beautiful.
I took a Flixbus. It has been much better than using a cheap flight- better seats, less hassle, no security, better views. And not that much slower when I factor in the time spent in the airport.

I don't recall cost, but feel it is less than air travel as well.

    Bayonne Has Charmed Me

    31 мая 2023 г., Франция ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

I am sitting on a ruined wall overlooking morning traffic and the River Adour, church bells are marking the hour, a boat swings gently on the current of the river.

My 1st night in a Hostel de Pelegrinos (Refuge Saint Jacques, Rue Grosse, €12 bed + breakfast + Carnet de Pelegrino) was easy and pleasant. The other pilgrims are from France and Spain: I could speak with some and muddle through broken conversation with the others. The hostelero (volunteer inn keeper) is a wonderful gentleman whose name I have not yet learned.

I did have a brief moment of concern (ok, almost panic) when I could not find the passport/money that I somehow stuffed into my rainjacket inside a stuff sack inside a daypack inside my backpack..... Packing inception! Juuust before panic set in I sorted it out. The upside is that now my pack is much more organized/ arranged! Yay!

It has been a long time since I've found myself in a place where I cannot communicate both clearly and easily, I love it! Perhaps it is time I learn French?

Taking the Flexibus from Bilbao was 'easy' but for the sake of reminding myself or others (should I flatter myself that someone may read this for travel info): the bus arrived 4 minutes before scheduled departure and only then did it appear on the departure screens. The bus left 6 minutes later. I'm glad I was attentive! Also, the QR code ticket did not work at the turnstiles, but a friendly worker was happy to let me through.... You gotta ask!
The bus does specifically say that they have restrooms. They do not. Which proved uncomfortable but not terrible for a few hours.

Getting a front-row seat was very worth it! The landscape is beautiful.

    In Bayonne...
I arrived and found the hostel (Merci, google maps!) Then took a welcomed hot shower and washed some clothes.... Note to self: 3 days in a merino shirt is amazingly only a little stinky but 2 would be better. Then I set out to look around at about 7pm.... In full daylight. The sun sets near 9.

This town is enchanting. Narrow pedestrian streets wind through tall walls of shuttered windows... Red and blue accents seem to predominate, with tiny balconies. I do not know how many are residential vs. commercial and I'd love to get into some of the buildings to look around; perhaps next visit.

I sat on a terrace near the river for dinner and splurged on a variety platter with a very nice glass of local white wine- dry and crisp with flavors of stone fruits, melon, and fresh grass. Reminds me of a pinot gris/Sauvignon blanc mix and paired very well with the ambiance.

My waitress very patiently endured my painfully bad French, despite the fact her English is near-perfect, for which I am grateful.

The total cost of the meal was less than €30 and would have cost at least 50% more in California.

Fairly-priced, delicious food has been a constant so far.

I am happy, content, and full of wonder at how fortunate I am to be able to travel safely this way. What a privilege!

    St Jean Pied de Port

    31 мая 2023 г., Франция ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

As I am laying in the dappled shade of an enormous tree (elm?) digesting a delicious Salade Jardiniere and glass of white wine, I am hearing birdsong, a leafblower (cursed plague of infernal noisemakers!), wind in the branches, and the occasional sound of a car or truck rolling along below me.

I cued up some french pop music on my playlist; keeping it 'local'. Maybe helping train my ear a little, too.

I chose to hike up into The Citadel- a decaying fortress undoubtedly put here to control access to the mountain pass that awaits me tomorrow.

I was much tempted to start my Camino today - the weather has been beautifully sunny and breezy. Tomorrow's forecast is much wetter but I am trusting that if rain is what I need to start my journey, then rain I shall have!

I am glad for this choice: Saint Jean Pied de Port is a picturesque little mountain town with charm and charisma. I've enjoyed poking around and may do a little bit more this afternoon.... Once I have dropped off my pack. It only weighs ~7kg (15ish lbs) but those kg are less comfy than walking without the pack.

    Besides..
Laying on a cool bench with a view is one of life's pleasures. Let's hope the thunderstorms hold back until at least 3:15 so I have time to get indoors!

Among the tough challenges today: staying awake! Jetlag continues ro work its magic, trying to make me nap. I hope to hold out so that I reset my circadian memory by getting onto local time, better.

But boy-howdy a nap sound wonderful!
