    September 1, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

The Alcobaça Monastery, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important historical and cultural landmark in Portugal. It was founded in 1153 and is renowned for its impressive Gothic architecture. The monastery is famous for housing the tombs of King Pedro I and his lover Inês de Castro. It was a tragic love story between Inês de Castro, a lady-in-waiting, and Dom Pedro, the Crown Prince. Their forbidden love ended in tragedy when Pedro's father ordered Inês's murder. As king, Pedro posthumously honored her, cementing their tale as a poignant Portuguese legend, much like Romeo and Juliet.Read more
