I'm taking a day off at Breckenridge, not because I'm tired. I had a reservation at a hostle and I had to pickup a resupply package. This trail is easier than New England trails. I'm here one day early without pushing at all. I haven't been keeping this up to date, because the trail thusfar hasn't been particularly interesting. The good stuff is ahead. So, 7 days and 100 miles. Just 400 to go. The picture was the other day. I'm at around 10k feet. Reached 11800 two days ago. Rocky Mountain High. Limited cell service so sporadic updates.Read more

Just past Searle Pass

Out of Breckenridge, there was a long hike up and over an unnamed pass. 6 miles up then 6 down into Copper Mountain Ski Resort. Long day that set me up for today's pass climb. As I passed Copper, I saw a sign "Beer". Had to stop for one. Weather is great, but the smoke from the Colorado fires is messing up my pictures. I'm at mile 132 now, more than a quarter done. Almost forgot. I hit 12300 feet today and am sleeping at 11k. Getting acclimated well.Read more

Near Mt Elbert

I'm near a staging point to climb My Elbert tomorrow. It's the tallest peak in Colorado at 14400 feet. I have to climb 4k feet tomorrow and I need to get it done before noon. The thunderstorms come in after that and it gets nasty. I'll decend the other side and cruise into Twin Lakes. I'll spend a couple of nights there to rest.
Sorry about the lack of updates and pictures. Truth is the trail is kind of boring. Not like Tahoe. Not much to talk about except a lot of hiking miles. I'll be at 175 tomorrow. Have to think if I want to keep going.Read more

Mt Elbert

Mt. Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado, and the second tallest in the lower 48 states. I got the opportunity to climb it today. Almost passed it by but figured I had time to bag it. I'm acclimated, and I had a day before my reservation at the Twin Lakes Inn. I camped near the base at 11000 feet, got moving at 6am, and reached the top by 9:30. I'm listening to Amazon Music as I write this. The song playing right now is 'Rocky Mountain High' For real! Anyway, Mt. Elbert is 14400 feet above where we live. I spent the rest of the day hiking down 5000 feet. These mountains are big. Somebody loaned me their sign. The other picture is Twin Lakes. Smoke is making my pictures dull.Read more

That's right, I'm off the trail, got a rental car and am wandering around the country for a while. Didn't want to rush home, so I decided to drive. It has been decided that I'll go a northerly route toward Minnesota and the Great Lakes. Might bump into Lake Michigan and go South for a while. I'll try to avoid big cities. Could be interesting.
I just read my last post. The reason I got off the trail is because my right shoulder is torched. Chronic problem that flared up and was just wearing me down. I got 175 miles done and I got to see what the Rockies we're like to hike . I'm good.Read more

Car camping is still better than staying in highway hotels. Losing track. I got the rental car on Tuesday, drove to Cheyenne Wyoming, and stayed in a hotel. Next morning, I drove through Eastern Wyoming, through South Dakota, into North Dakota, and stayed in a hotel in Dickinson, ND. Got moving today at around 7am, and drove the length of ND. The fisrt hour or two of looking at the Plains is interesting. After 3 days, it gets extremely boring. I got good at driving straight for hours without paying attention. Finally today I got into Minnesota for my first time. And the world changed immediately. They have trees and some hills. Headed through Wisconsin to Michigan tomorrow. My campsite. Place is loaded with old people in RV's. Quite, except for the whir of the air conditioners.
If this'll is getting dull, sorry. It's not the Rockies . I'm mostly doing this to remind myself about the trip.Read more

Tip top of Lake Michigan? Not sure, but real close. A saltless ocean. I tasted it to be sure. I saw that sign. Didn't taste that crap. Had a Swedish breakfast, which was great.
