    Trotz extrem wechselhaftem Wetter ist Valencia ein Erlebnis. Die Straßen sind voll mit Menschen, die je nach Wetterlage zwischen kurzen Ärmeln und Regenmantel/Schirm und Winterjacke+Haube wechseln. Ich bewundere diese Flexibilität und v.a. die Geschwindigkeit in der hier angepasst wird.

    Ich wünschte ich wäre bei besserem Wetter hier. Das Meer und die großen Grünflächen der Stadt wirken sehr einladend.

    Despite the extremely changeable weather, Valencia is an experience. The streets are full of people who, depending on the weather, switch between short sleeves and raincoats/umbrellas and winter jackets and hats. I admire this flexibility and above all the speed with which it is adjusted here.

    Mahjong in Valencia

    Und dann war da noch das Mahjong Turnier ...
    (ja, Mahjong ist ein echtes Spiel, nicht das Symbole zusammensuchen das man auf Windows spielen kann). Konkret spiele ich japanisches Mahjong, auch Riichi Mahjong genannt.

    Traurigerweise war ich beim Turnier nicht erfolgreich (48. Platz von 60), aber ich habe gut gespielt (bei Mahjong ist leider Glück mindestens so wichtig wie Skill, aber Glück hatte ich kaum) und alles in allem hat es Spaß gemacht (trotz zwischenzeitlichen Frustmomente).

    (yes, mahjong is a real game, not the symbol matching game you can play on Windows). Specifically, I play Japanese Mahjong, also called Riichi Mahjong.

    Sadly, I didn't succeed in the tournament (48th place out of 60), but I think I played well (unfortunately luck is at least as important as skill in mahjong, but I wasn't very lucky) and overall it was fun (despite the occasional frustration).

    Nach 15 °C in Spanien ist es schon recht hart für mich, bei MINUS 5 °C aus dem Haus zu gehen um ein bisschen Bewegung zu bekommen.

    Aber es ist wunderbar sonnig.
    Und es ist halt schon auch sehr schön wieder daheim zu sein und meine Lieben wieder zu sehen.

    Von Bangkok gings mit dem Zug nach Ayutthaya. 28 Baht für zwei Personen in der 3. Klasse. Guter Deal ;-)

    In Ayutthaya haben wir uns ein Moped ausgeborgt und damit die Stadt erkundet. Ohne Moped wäre es sehr anstrengend geworden denn es war sonnig und sehr schwül.

    Es gibt dort so viele Tempel und Tempelruinen, dass man sich gar nicht alles anschauen kann bzw wird man wahrscheinlich irgendwann tempelblind.

    Die aktiven Tempelanlagen sind nächtens zwar begehbar (und super Abkürzungen), doch würde ich sie umgehen um nicht von den dort ruhenden Hunderudeln verfolgt und angebellt zu werden (ist uns passiert, war mir nicht ganz geheuer).

    In Ayutthaya we borrowed a moped and explored the city with it. Without a moped it would have been very exhausting because it was sunny and very humid.

    There are so many temples and temple ruins there that you can't see everything or you'll probably become temple blind at some point.

    The active temple complexes are accessible at night (and great shortcuts), but I would bypass them to avoid being followed and barked at by the packs of dogs resting there (happened to us, I wasn't quite comfortable).

    Nach Ayutthaya gab's wieder eine 3.Klasse Bahnfahrt zurück nach Bangkok und dann einen Inlandsflug nach Ranong.

    Ranong ist eine kleine Hafenstadt, man sieht die Nachbarschaft zu Myanmar.

    Auch hier gibt es Gebäude die als Skelette von der asiatischen Finanzkrise in den 90ern zeugen. Z.b. ein nie fertiggestelltes Hotel.

    After Ayutthaya there was another 3rd class train ride back to Bangkok and then a domestic flight to Ranong.

    Ranong is a small port town, you can see the neighborhood to Myanmar.

    Here, too, there are buildings that bear witness to the Asian financial crisis in the 90s as skeletons. E.g. a hotel that was never completed.

    Von Ranong mit dem Speedboot und vom "Hafen" geht's mit zwei Mopedtaxis (Rucksack zwischen die Beine, Sue bzw. Marcus hinten drauf) quer über die Insel zum Resort. Danach ist man vollgestaubt und durchgerüttelt, aber man kommt an.

    Strom gibt's zwar nicht immer, aber ausreichend um Handy und Taschenlampe wieder aufzuladen.
    Untertags Inselerkunden, Schwimmen und Entspannen.
    Abends wandern wir von Resort zu Resort, um Abendessen (alles war ausgezeichnet) und das eine oder andere Bier oder einen schönen Cocktail in einer der netten Bars am Strand zu finden.

    Viele Deutsche sind hier. Laut einem Wiener den wir hier getroffen haben, liegt das an einem der ersten deutschen Reiseführer für Thailand, der - entgegen seinem englischen Counterpart - diese Insel hoch gelobt hat (der englische Autor mochte die Nachbarinsel Koh Phayam lieber).

    Alles in allem menschenleere saubere Strände und freundliche Leute, ein Traum.

    From Ranong with the speedboat and from the "harbour" we take two moped taxis (backpack between the legs, Sue or Marcus on the back) across the island to the resort. After that you're covered in dust and shaken up, but you get there.

    There isn't always electricity, but there is enough electricity to recharge cell phones and flashlights.
    Explore the island, swim and relax during the day.
    In the evening we wander from resort to resort to find dinner (everything was excellent) and a beer or two or a nice cocktail in one of the bars on the beach.

    Many Germans are here. According to a Viennese we met here, this is due to one of the first German travel guides for Thailand, who - contrary to his English counterpart - praised this island highly (the English author preferred the neighboring island of Koh Phayam).

    All in all deserted clean beaches and friendly people, a dream.

    Wir sind eine Insel weiter gezogen, wo angeblich viel mehr los ist als auf Ko Chang. Mehr, ja. Viel mehr? Naja, Freitag und Samstag Abend war nicht grad die Hölle los. Na uns solls recht sein 😉

    Wir haben uns dann wieder ein Moped ausgeborgt um die Insel zu erkunden. War gar nicht so leicht eines zu finden, da merkt man dass doch mehr Touris hier sind. Es gibt auch mehr "echte" Straßen als auf Ko Chang, und viel mehr Lokale und Shops.

    Ein Lokal (Hippie Bar) am Strand schaut aus wie ein grosser Abenteuerspielplatz (in dem allerdings Kinder unter 10 verboten sind), ein Teil schaut aus wie ein Schiff (das bei Flut sogar im Wasser steht).

    Mitten im Dschungel haben wir nach Empfehlung von Deutschen die wir auf Ko Chang getroffen haben ein Lokal (Payam Seaview) besucht, das gute und günstige Thai Küche hat, ein Hausschwein und aufgrund der leicht erhöhten Position eine super Aussicht auf den Dschungel und dahinter das Meer.

    Sonntag vormittag sind wir mit nem Paddelboot von unserem Resort über die Bucht und dann ein wenig den Fluss entlang landeinwärts gepaddelt. Damit es nicht heißt wir würden hier nur faulenzen 😉

    Sonntag abends gab's dann noch ein Highlight - Muay Thai Boxing. Sieben Matches,untermalt mit der klassischen Wettkampfmusik und dazwischen ganz gute Auflegerei.

    We moved to the next island which is said to have a lot more going on than Ko Chang. More, yes. Much more? Well, on Friday and Saturday evening all hell wasn't going on. But that's fine with us 😉

    We then borrowed a moped again to explore the island. Wasn't that easy to find one, you can tell that there are more tourists here. There are also more "real" streets than on Ko Chang, and many more eateries and shops.

    A bar (hippie bar) on the beach looks like a big adventure playground (in which children under 10 are forbidden), part looks like a ship (which even stands in the water at high tide).

    In the middle of the jungle, on the recommendation of Germans we met on Ko Chang, we visited a restaurant (Payam Seaview) that has good and cheap Thai cuisine, a domestic pig and, due to the slightly elevated position, a great view of the jungle and the sea behind it .

    Sunday morning we paddled a paddle boat from our resort across the bay and then a little along the river inland. So that it doesn't mean we would just laze around here 😉
    In the evening there was another highlight - Muay Thai Boxing. Seven matches, accompanied by the classic competition music and in between quite good DJs.

    Von Koh Phayam sind wir mit Speedboot nach Ranong, auf der Ladefläche eines Pickups zum Busbahnhof und von dort mit dem Bus nach Surat Thani.

    Wir saßen schon im Bus als der Busfahrer beginnt Motor herum zu werken um schließlich mit irgendeinem ausgebauten Teil in einem Tuktuk zu verschwinden 🤷‍♀️
    Er ist glücklicherweise wieder zurück gekommen und wir sind dann mit nur 45 Minuten Verspätung losgefahren 😉

    Da wir erst kurz vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit in der Stadt angekommen sind haben wir nichts gesehen, aber wir haben ausgezeichnet Sushi gegessen und uns mit ein paar Thais über die lokale Kulinarik unterhalten.

    Koh Samui

    Eigentlich wollte ich gar nicht nach Koh Samui. Grosse Insel mit Full Moon Parties ... nicht so meins.

    Aber ein Freund ist da vor ein paar Jahren mit seiner Frau hin gezogen und den wollte ich dann halt doch besuchen, wenn ich schon in der Gegend bin ...

    Also gings mit Taxi, Bus und Fähre nach Koh Samui. Faszinierend, wie das Zettelwerk hier funktioniert. Im Hotel Zettel bekommen, den man dem Taxifahrer zeigt und der bringt einen zur Busstation. Dort nehmen sie einem den Zettel mit und man bekommt einen neuen, den man dann bei der Fähre abgibt. Funktioniert 😉

    Koh Samui ist - im Vergleich mit den kleinen Inseln auf denen wir vorher waren - vor allem eins: teuer. Also man kann schon auch günstig rumkommen, aber man spürt es schon.

    Wir hatten jedenfalls eine schöne Zeit auf Koh Samui, haben Michi und seine Frau getroffen, ein paar Thais kennengelernt, waren ziplinen und haben fast 140km mit dem Moped hinter uns gebracht.

    Actually, I didn't want to go to Koh Samui at all. Big island with full moon parties ... not my thing. But a friend of mine moved there with his wife a few years ago and I wanted to visit him when I'm already in the area...

    So we went to Koh Samui by taxi, bus and ferry. It's fascinating how the slips of paper work here. Get a piece of paper at the hotel, show it to the taxi driver and he will take you to the bus station. There they take the note with them and you get a new one, which you then hand in at the ferry. Works 😉

    Compared to the small islands we were on before, Koh Samui is one thing above all: expensive. So you can get around cheaply, but you can feel it.

    In any case, we had a great time on Koh Samui, met Michi and his wife, got to know a few Thais, went ziplining and covered almost 140km on a moped.

    Diese kleine Stadt ist voll mit 2. Weltkriegserinnerungen. Der Bau der Thailand-Burma-Zugsverbindung, die Konzentrationslager, die Brücke über den Kwai ... dazu gibt es Museen, Gedenksteine, Friedhöfe ...

    Abgesehen davon (das death Railway Museum ist übrigens sehr interessant) sind hier extrem viele chinesische Touristen, die mit Bussen angekarrt werden und Russen. Laut der Rezeptionistin meines Hotels ist das aber noch gar nichts gegen das Niveau vor Covid. Bin ganz froh dass ich das nicht erlebe, die Stadt ist ja nicht so gross.

    Habe mir ein Moped ausgeborgt, bin zum Erawan Nationalpark gefahren und zum himmlischen Drachen und zum Riesen Regenbaum. Hätte ich ohne Moped wahrscheinlich nur mit einer bezahlten Tour gesehen ...

    This small town is packed with WWII memories. The construction of the Thailand-Burma railway line, the concentration camps, the bridge over the River Kwai... there are also museums, memorial stones, cemeteries...

    Apart from that (the death railway museum is very interesting by the way) there are extremely many Chinese tourists, who are carted there by bus, and Russians. According to the receptionist at my hotel, this is nothing compared to the pre-Covid level. I'm very glad that I don't experience that, the city isn't that big.

    Borrowed a moped, rode to Erawan National Park and Heavenly Dragon and Giant Rain Tree. Without the moped I probably would have seen those things only with a paid tour ...

    Kirschblüte, Dahu Park & Bailusishan

    Habe Kirschbäume gesucht, und das Ende der taiwanesischen Kirschblüte gesehen.
    Die meisten Kirschbaumsorten hier sind Frühblüher (teilweise fangen sie schon im Januar zu blühen an) aber ein paar Bäume anderer Sorten gibt's die noch blühen (aber nicht mehr lang).

    Dann ein kurzer Besuch im Dahu Park, um den Bailusishan Wanderweg zu gegen - ein steingepflasterter Wanderweg, kommt mir zwar komisch vor, aber es war sehr schön.

    Most of the cherry tree varieties here are early bloomers (some begin flowering as early as January), but there are a few trees of other varieties that are still in bloom (but ending).

    Taipeh 101 hat eine so extrem lange Warteschlange, dass es keinen Spaß macht zu warten. Stattdessen bin ich zum Platz der Freiheit gegangen um mir die Nationale Chiang-Kai-shek-Gedächtnishalle und Umgebung anzuschauen.

    Ausserdem hab ich mir noch ein paar schöne Tempel angeschaut. Ich find die Figuren und Tiere an den Säulen auf den Dächern so cool!
    Leider ist meine Handykamera nicht so gut, man kann die wunderbaren Drachen und Vögel auf den Dächern nicht gut erkennen.

    Taipei 101 has such an extremely long line that it's not fun to wait. Instead, I went to Freedom Square to see the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the surrounding area.

    I also looked at a few beautiful temples. I think the figures and animals on the pillars on the roofs are so cool!

    Der größte Buddha Taiwans lockt nahe Kaohsiung. Etwa eine Stunde mit dem öffentlichen Bus, in dem war ich allein, wie auch die meiste Zeit danach. Klar warn dort andere Leute, aber die verlaufen sich in der riesigen Anlage.

    Im Museum hat man mir ein Buch über humanistischen Buddhismus geschenkt und ich habe viel über die vielen Feste im Buddhismus gelernt.

    Das Kloster war noch leerer und am wenigsten war im Great Buddha Land los, wo viele goldene Buddhas rumstehen.

    The largest Buddha in Taiwan lures near Kaohsiung. About an hour on the public bus, I was alone on it, as was most of the time afterwards. Of course other people warn there, but they get lost in the huge complex.

    One of the museum's staff gave me a book on humanistic Buddhism and I learned a lot about the many festivals in Buddhism.

    Schöner Weg auf den Shou Shan, ob man lieber Naturweg (mit bißchen klettern) oder Planken und Stufen hat, kann man selbst entscheiden.
    In den kleinen Rast-Pavillions gibt es zum Teil Tee zur Stärkung. Da Sonntag war, war sehr viel los, aber fast nur Einheimische.

    Nice way up the Shou Shan, you can decide for yourself whether you prefer a natural path (with a bit of climbing) or boardwalks and steps.
    In some of the small rest pavilions there is tea to strengthen yourself. Since it was Sunday, there was a lot going on, but almost only locals.
