  • St. George, Utah

    9 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Not much to report for today. Slept in Las Vegas last night, picked up a rental car and drove to Saint George. I-15 has a few wild miles going through the Virgin River Gorge. Nice little downtown. Got into our condo for the week. And relaxing by the pool this evening. At 7:40 PM the temperature is 101 F (38C). We are told today is a "high humidity day of "30%" (snort) !!!En savoir plus

  • Dino Cliffs and first afternoon at Zion

    11 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

A little less hot today. 9 AM hike in the Red Cliffs Desert Preserve was in the mid-80's. About 2.5 miles, along the base of Dino Cliffs (Dinosaur fossil footprint in the sandstone) going out and across the cliff face on return. Then we drove to Zion National Park. Went up & down Zion Canyon in the park bus. One short walk along the Virgin River almost to the narrowest part, not quite. Rain storm came through and dropped temperatures into the mid-70's! SEVENTIES!!!!!

    Back to Zion tomorrow!

  • Zion Emerald Pools Hike

    12 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Woke up early, got on the road to Zion before sunrise. It paid off, we arrived in the park at 7:30. Shuttle bus got us to the trailhead sometime after 8. Climbed to the third and highest Emerald Pool while the canyon was still in shade. About 80F at the start. We were almost alone on the hike up, about 700 feet of elevation gain. When we came down, it was like hiking down the Up Escalator! So many people! It was 92 and sunny on the way down. Go early to beat the heat and the masses of humanity!

Post hike beer and lunch at Silver Reef Brewing in St. George.

  • Kolob Canyon Hike

    13 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Drove to Kolob Canyon, the less visited side of Zion National Park. Up on the northwest West corner of the park.

Did a 3.6 mile hike up and down Taylor Creek, passing by a Little Log Cabin built in Pioneer days. Trail went about 2.5 miles into a side canyon. We turned around after a snack at a nice little waterfall (see video).

After we drove to the top of the main canyon, and a short 1/2 mile trail to a 6300' summit with 360 views of Zion and south Utah.

  • Cedar Breaks National Monument.

    13 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We finished at Kolob Canyon early enough, that we decided to check out Cedar Breaks as a place to hike and visit tomorrow.

Driving out of Cedar City UT, the road climbed continuously for 10 miles. Arriving at the Visitor's Center, the elevation was over 10,000 feet. Park Ranger gave us some hiking suggestions. Then we did the short walk to Point Supreme Overlook.

    O! M! G!

The photos will not do it justice.

The Southwest's Grand Staircase ends here. The landscape changes from High Altitude Cedar Forest to Grand Canyon multi-layer cliffs over several feet. The plateau edge is eroding away to expose all the sedimentary rock layers.

Temperature at Cedar Breaks at 1PM: 63F. St George at 4 PM: 104F.

We are coming back to hike tomorrow.

  • Bryce Canyon Rim Walk

    14 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Change of plans today. We drove to Cedar Breaks National Monument early. At 7:30 AM, the temperature at 10,000 feet was 43F! So we decided to continue driving to Bryce Canyon National Park, about an hour further along.

At 8:30 and 2000 feet lower elevation it was a much better 57 degrees.

Bryce is a similar "breaks amphitheater" as Cedar Breaks.

I am splitting our hike, 5.5 miles total, today into two footprints. First is a long walk on the relatively flat Rim Trail, over looking the sandstone cliffs and HooDoo sandstone spires.

Stay tuned for part two ...

  • Cedar Breaks National Monument

    15 août 2024, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We made to back to Cedar Breaks N. M. We did a pretty easy loop trail along the rim of the Breaks. Through a Cedar, Pine and Aspen forest that runs to the edge of the cliff. Mid point of the hike was one of the overlooks on the amphitheater/cliffs.

The National Monument is nicer than either National Parks because there is almost no development. No central road with a thousand cars and shuttle buses. No hoards of people. Just a Visitors' Center, an Admin Building, and a campground across the road.

Comparing Bryce to Cedar Breaks, Bryce had more interesting sandstone formations (one was called the Cathedral, another was a Castle) and HooDoo spires (we hiked past one called Queen Victoria). Cedar Breaks amphitheater was more visually stunning. It seemed larger, wider and deeper. And the transition from high altitude Alpine Forest and meadows, to multi-layer sandstone cliffs is just amazing!

    Enjoy the photos!
