El Calafate Town I

El Calafate ist ein kleines gepflegtes Touristenstädtchen mit schnuckeligen Häusern und kleinen Hotels. Hässliche Bettenburgen sucht man zum Glück noch vergebens. Calafate ist der Name einer Beere (ähnlich einer Blaubeere 🫐), die hier an stacheligen Sträuchern wächst. Eine Ansammlung dieser Büsche am Ende des Lago Argentina bot Wollhändlern und anderen Reisenden Windschutz. Und als sich dann dort eine Ortschaft bildete, nannte man sie kurzum El Calafate.
Bei bestem Herbstwetter schaute ich mir die Laguna Nimez an, die sich am See gebildet hat und jetzt ein sumpfiges Vogelschutzgebiet ist. Neben Enten und ein paar bunten Vögeln gabs vor allem Flamingos (weit weg) und Hochlandgänse, auch Magellan-Gänse genannt (ganz dicht) zu sehen. Irgendwann war ich die Einzige dort und ganz allein mit dem Schnattergetier. Schööön!!! Bei meinem Spaziergang entlang der Seepromenade zurück in die Stadt, bekam ich Gesellschaft. Einen Wachhund, der ganz kraulbedürftig war. Hier gibt es viele freilaufende Hunde, die die Menschen aber in Ruhe lassen und nur sich selbst anbellen. Sind auch alle wohl genährt. Ingesamt, ein nettes Örtchen am Lago Argentino. Dieser ist übrigens mit 1.415 qkm der grösste See Argentiniens und damit 3x so gross wie der Bodensee. In El Calafate nur 2m tief (was im Winter Schlittschuhlaufen bedeutet) und an den Gletschern, die ihn speisen, bis zu 700m tief.

El Calafate is a small, well-kept tourist town with cute houses and small hotels. Luckily, you won't find any ugly high buildings. Calafate is the name of a berry (similar to a blueberry 🫐) that grows on spiky bushes here. A cluster of these bushes at the end of Lago Argentino provided shelter from the wind for wool merchants and other travelers. And when a village was established there, they called it El Calafate as well.
In the best autumn weather, I looked at the Laguna Nimez, which is nowadays a swampy bird sanctuary. In addition to ducks and a few colorful birds, there were mainly flamingos (far away) and highland geese, also called Magellan geese (very close). At some point I was the only one there and all alone with the birds. Nice!!! On my walk along the lake promenade back to the city, I got company. A guard dog that was in need of some cuddles. There are a lot of free-roaming dogs here, but they leave people alone and only bark at themselves. All of them are well fed. Overall, a nice little city on Lago Argentino. Incidentally, this is Argentina's largest lake at 1,415 square kilometers and is three times the size of Lake Constance. At El Calafate only 2m deep (which means it is frozen and is used for ice skating in winter) and at the glaciers that feed it up to 700m deep.Read more
