Arequipa I

Arequipa ist sooo schön, haben sie gesagt - nun, hier bin ich! Arequipa ist nach Lima die zweitgrößte Stadt in Peru, liegt am Fuße dreier Vulkane, hat imposante Kolonialbauten zu bieten und ein ganzjährig mildes Klima, da nur 70km vom Pazifik entfernt. Nicht allzuweit entfernt liegen der Colca Canyon (3270 m) und der Cotahuasi Canyon (3354 m), zwei der tiefsten Schluchten der Welt (quasi doppelt so tief wie der Grand Canyon in den USA). Da ich aber noch etwas angeschlagen bin, spar ich mir die Ausflüge dorthin und glaub das einfach mal. 😉
Der Reiseführer weiterhin: Arequipa selbst liegt 2335 Meter hoch und ist für Reisende, die in noch höher gelegene Regionen wie zum Titicacasee (3812 Meter) oder nach Cusco (3416 Meter) wollen, der perfekte Ort, um sich zu akklimatisieren beziehungsweise an die Höhe zu gewöhnen. - Wer’s glaubt…
Was bei der Stadt sofort auffällt: a) die Berge. b) alles hupt und überall wird zu laute Musik gespielt. c) fast alle sind kleiner als ich 😳😂. Der spanische Einfluss ist unübersehbar.
Arequipa wird auch "Ciudad Blanca" (Weiße Stadt) genannt.
Warum, ist strittig. Die einen behaupten, der Name stamme von den weißen Häusern aus Sillar, einem hellen Vulkangestein, die anderen von den ursprünglich reinweißen Stadtbewohnern. Denn nachdem die Spanier Arequipa im Jahr 1540 auf den Grundfesten einer Inka-Siedlung gegründet hatten, beanspruchten sie die Stadt für sich. Das farbige Dienstpersonal verbannten die goldgierigen Kolonialherren in die Randbezirke Arequipas.

Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru after Lima, lies at the foot of three volcanoes, has impressive colonial buildings and a mild climate all year round, as it is only 70km away from the Pacific. Not too far away are Colca Canyon (3270 m) and Cotahuasi Canyon (3354 m), two of the deepest canyons in the world (almost twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA). But since I'm still a bit shaky, I'll save myself the trips there and just believe it. 😉

What immediately strikes you about the city: a) the mountains. b) everything honks and loud music is played everywhere. c) almost everyone is smaller than me 😳😂. The Spanish influence is undenyable.
Arequipa is also called "Ciudad Blanca" (White City).
Why is debatable. Some claim the name comes from the white houses made of Sillar, a light-colored volcanic rock, others from the originally pure white townspeople. After the Spanish conquerors founded Arequipa in 1540 on the foundations of an Inca settlement, they claimed the city for themselves.
