Cusco, Street Impressions

Im Großen und Ganzen ist das Zentrum von Cusco wirklich schön. Falls mal alte Fassaden dabei sind, sieht man es eh nicht, weil davor irgendetwas verkauft wird. Manche Fassaden in der oberen Altstadt sehen hingegen ramponiert aus, das liegt aber auch daran, dass Renovierungen sehr harten Denkmalauflagen unterliegen, was die Besitzer schlichtweg überfordert. Häuser hier, das alte zum Beispiel, kosten 1-2 Mio. Dollar, die hübschen im Stadtzentrum 15-20 Mio. Auch ein Grund, warum das „neue“ Cusco die Hügel hinaufwächst. Das ist es noch erschwinglicher. Einer der Cusco-Trötbusse mit offenen Türen und schreiendem Einweiser wird da dann schon hochtuckeln.
Auffällig sind auch die Balkone, früher ein Statussymbol. Wer es sich leisten konnte, hatte einen. Je schöner, desto mehr Ansehen.
Und nicht zu übersehen, die allgegenwärtigen Strassenverkäufer(innen). Ich gender mal ausnahmsweise, denn es sind zu 95% Frauen und Kinder, die das machen. Jegliches Art von Essen gibt es dort, meist zwischen 1-5 Soles (30 ct - 2,50 Euro). Die Mutigen probieren nach einem sonnigen, warmen Tag abends die Hühnchenfleischspieße.

Overall, the center of Cusco is really beautiful. When there are old facades, you don't see them anyway because something is being sold in front of them, covering them. Some facades in the upper old town, on the other hand, look battered, but this is also due to the fact that renovations are subject to very strict monument requirements, which simply overwhelms the owners. Houses here, the old one for example, cost 1-2 million dollars, the pretty ones in the city center 15-20 million. Another reason why the “new” Cusco is growing up the hills. It's more affordable. One of the funny Cusco busses with open doors and a screaming guide will then trundle up.
The balconies, formerly a status symbol, are also striking. Anyone who could afford it had one. The more beautiful, the more prestige.
