Bangkok, Wat Pho - II (Reclining Buddha)

Die Hauptattraktion des Wat Pho ist heute die berühmte 46 Meter lange und 15 Meter hohe vergoldete liegende Buddha-Statue. In Thailand gibt es zahlreiche, riesige Statuen liegender Buddhas, manche sogar begehbar. Dieser hier ist es nicht, man sieht ihn auch kaum in einem Stück, nur von den Füßen her. Er ist vollkommen vergoldet, gebaut aus Ziegeln und Zement. Da beide Füße symmetrisch sind und parallel liegen, symbolisiert die liegende Statue den Eingang Buddhas ins Nirwana. Die Perlmutt-Einlegearbeiten an den Füßen sind extrem filigran!
