St. John’s to Twillingate Pt 2 Elliston

    June 20, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Today was going to be a long day - lots of driving and multiple bucket list stops along the way.
    PUFFINS!!!
During our planning for this trip I came across Elliston as a great place to see puffins. I love puffins so this was a must do as we made our way to Twillingate. We came across the Puffin Cafe as we were looking for a place to eat and so decided to stop in for lunch and to make sure we had the best directions to where to see the puffins.
Again the nicest, most helpful waitress confirmed where we could locate them - “past the beach past the park” - almost didn’t catch the directions with the speed at which she said it and with the heavy Newfie accent 🤪
I’ll be honest, I was expecting to walk to a point of land where you could look across the water to an island where the puffins were nesting. We brought along the binocs and my little camera which has a small telephoto lens in the hopes we might get some good sights.
OMG 😳 As we created the hill and walked toward the point of land - THEY WERE RIGHT THERE!! About 2 dozen puffins were perched on the grass and rocks on the edge of the point.
No need for the binocs (although you could have used them to see all the ones nesting on the island) and I swear that every photo posted was taken with our phone cameras.
As I sat watching and taking photos the most amazing and magical thing happened - 2 of the cutest and most curious little creatures essentially walked right up to me! They were within about 10 feet as I controlled my urge to reach out and try to pet them 😍
This was truly the absolute highlight of my trip - it became the theme and I came home with so many puffin souvenirs 😁
I should also note that Elliston is also known as the root cellar capital of the world - they’re pretty cool too.
