  • Grant Grove

    9 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Walked among the giants. We loved climbing through the old, fallen trunks. We named the branches dragon-eating tree (left) and person raising tree hands high (right). Fun fact - General Grant tree is 1700 years old! Oh - and. I had to pull a splinter out of Franklin's butt!Leer más

  • Setting up Camp

Kids and I are setting up a bit. I taught Franklin how to wave me back into a spot. Samantha is just relaxing.

  • Hot night in van!

    10 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We did NOT do very well last night - van was much hotter than air outside! We've talked about strategies and will try some new techniques tonight. Also we all started with our heads at one end with me in the middle - but I realized I needed to lie the other way to give us more room. It will be cramped but we can do it! Team Dickerman!Leer más

  • Zumwalt meadows P1

    10 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We stopped at the end of the road and checked in with the rangers. They advised us to take the river loop as the hike up to the misty falls was muddy. Then, as we were getting our packs ready, a group of rangers came by, one with a shotgun. They said a bear was near by. A few minutes later we heard two booms. We spoke to the ranger with the gun. He said he fires rubber bullets - and this bear was small enough that he only shot near him. We then went for a nice walk along the river. Almost the entire thing is white water - the power of the water is amazing.Leer más

  • Up and at 'em!

    11 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Well - not exactly..we slept very well - much better than the night before. I think we got about 11 hours of sleep!

One thing I mention only for posterity- Kha seemed to have packed for home our other bed sheet. No matter - we can buy another - but I'll never get the 30 minutes I spent last night turning the van upside down back. I'm not sure if there are any swears the kids don't know yet - let's just say this was a comprehensive review session.

Anyway - we drove to Moro Rock and had breakfast in the parking lot.

  • Tree Fun & Housekeeping

    11 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

While mom may have had the kids shower every day in San Diego, let's just say that Daddy Camp plays by slightly different rules. We went and did laundry at a little general store - but we didn't partake in the public showers. I mean - we did go swimming three days ago!

Anyhoo - we drove through a tree and then we had lunch in the van while the laundry twirled and probably should have hit up mom on the free wifi to let her know we might be off the grid for the rest of the day. But that would be thinking ahead - and that's not my forte.... Sorry to worry you Mooma!

  • A change of plans

    11 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We stopped at LodgePole and saw a very nice little documentary about bears. WE LOVE THE BEARSIES!! We just want to hug them and squeeze them and kiss their little black nosies!

Sorry - anyway - we were thinking about a 7 mile hike through the Giant Trees but at that point 7 miles seemed a bit much so we asked about a shorter hike at the ranger station and a nice young guy pointed us to a hike to Tokopah Falls near Lodgepole.Leer más

  • Bearsies!!!

    11 de julio de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

And then it happened! We'd seen several bears from the car last summer in Shenandoah - including a baby bear eating a deer by the side of the road. And we saw fresh scat on the trail when we were backpacking - but never a bear while hiking... until now! If was a beautiful cinnamon color,up the slope a bit. We loved him right away and had to fight the urge to squeeeeeeze him so much!

Later on the way back other hikers told us a bear had just crossed the trail ahead of us bug we couldn't find him. I know it was this bear looking for hugs!!
