2017 West Coast Road Trip

  • A search for water

    17 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I didn't actually take any pics of this series of events but it warrants noting. There is no water source at Tamarack Flats except the local stream water which needs to be boiled. So we set out I search of a tap to fill the van from. I tried the gas station just above the valley but all they had were the bathroom taps which would have been quite slow. But the nice guy behind the counter told me about Fern Spring down at the bottom of the road just as you hit the valley floor.

We drove down and checked it out. It's a pretty spring with stone wall around it. The sign talked about how the water is filtered by the mountain and Native Americans used it for centuries - but it didn't actually say potable. So, we decided to drive a bit further to the El Capitan bridge where I could get LTE internet and read up on it. When I googled the spring I got many comments saying it was drinkable. So we circled back to fill up.

(I'll pause here to mention that we asked four different rangers later in the day if they drank from the spring and all said many people do but that they personally wouldn't - for exactly the reason that follows)

When we got back there was a pickup trucked parked by the spring and two guys standing by the pool of water. And in it was their yellow lab having a nice bath! Yuck!

I told them it was potable water and they just shrugged a very insincere "sorry"

Short story long after spending the day in the valley we still hadn't found water anywhere we could get the van close to - but then I asked a park employee by some utility buildings if he had any ideas and get filled us up with a hose from the side of the building that they all use to fill their coolers while working. Nice guy.

  • More pizza!

    17 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

So after the whole water adventure we decided to spend one more day in the valley. As it was Monday, the traffic was lighter. Still, we parked out by the El Capitan bridge and took the shuttle in.

We ended up back in the village and had more pizza and checked out more museums and gift shops. Don't worry Kha - those cookies are made of broccoli and kale! 😀

  • Starting Up Lembert Dome

    18 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Having seen the valley twice, we decided to head East towards Tioga Pass. Before we left camp there was a bit of a mix up about who was taking our site. The pressure to get a campsite was intense because all of the campgrounds East of us were closed - including Tuolumne Meadows! I realized how lucky we were to get the spot we did!

The drive out was gorgeous - and I could enjoy it more because we weren't rushing to find a place to camp. Just past Tuolumne Meadows is Lemberg Dome. We decided to do the 4 mile loop around the back of the dome with a scramble to the top.

In the last picture you can see a sweet deer that walked right up near to us, did a little turn around like a cat, and lay down to rest. We loved watching her ears wiggle!

  • Getting close...

    18 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I continue to be amazed at all the little micro climates we go through as we go up.

Franklin was really tired but stuck with it - both kids have been great about pushing through on this trip!

  • To the top!

    18 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The dome itself was really nice. The granite had lots of crystals embedded in it so it was very grippy for climbing. The last little bit was intimidating but Franklin and I scrambled to the top for the big view. Samantha may have shown better judgement to sit the last bit out!Meer informatie

  • Dog Dome and Descent

    18 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

So it turns out you can get the same view by scrambling up Dog Dome right next door. Samantha wins again! We also really found the leftover boulders fascinating - there was a sign saying the name but I forgot to take a picture. The hike down gave us a taste of the meadows.Meer informatie

  • Dinner and unexpected exit stage left

    18 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We did laundry and had dinner down in Lee Vining. The plan was to drive back up to a lake just outside the park where there was a bathroom and people often boon docked. It looked great when we drove by.

However, as we finished dinner we noticed this tremendous haze had moved in. I looked online and saw there was a massive fire going on in the Central Valley just across the Sierras. So, not being too familiar with smoke conditions (New England being an environment more suited to human habitation) I thought it was best to drive away from the smoke. This from a former pack-a-day guy.

So I didn't take any more pictures but I white-knuckled it all the way up to Lake Tahoe. The smoke got thicker as went went (at first) but I was certain we'd be OK because I could always call... (no cell)... or at least stop (not many towns, hotels full)... as I said - white-knuckled.

But ended up at a nice motel and actually had a hot shower and a good night's sleep.

There is no truth to the rumor that I did all this to have WiFi so I could finally watch the Game of Thrones season seven opener - but it did't hurt.

On and the kids - stayed awake the whole way listening to Ender's Game. Finally got them to sleep around 11:00. They slept until 10:00.

  • Nature Walk

    19 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

In search of a good place to go swimming,we stumbled into this funny little place called Tallac State Park. It was a private club with a bunch of different lodges and out-buildings that ran from the start of the 30th century until the early 1970's. It was then donated to (or I suspect seized by) the government.

But - before we get to that - the ranger place had a very well designed nature walk that illustrated the variety of natural filters between the mountains and the Lake.

  • The Lodges

    19 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

I hardly took any pictures of the "camp". I don't know - but a lot of this leaves me pretty cold. I can't imagine I would have liked many of these elitist types. Too waspy.

  • Around and up to Donner

    19 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We stopped off to look at the island where the crazy "look at my toes" hermit lived but you can see the haze is still thick. Franklin took a few pots shots with the "cannon".

It wasn't long up to Donner Lake where the kids helped set up shop. We had a nice pasta dinner and then - our first screen activity in a couple weeks - we watched "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" with the laptop on the dashboard. Well - with watched the first half and finished it the next night. Samantha liked the movie but isn't convinced Clint was particularly "good". Still - it wax the perfect movie given all the land we'd travelled through.Meer informatie

  • Old Train Tunnels

    20 juli 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We drove up to Donner Pass to take in the view and check out these old train tunnels. You can see it just to the left of Samantha's head in the first picture. Parts of the tunnels were through the rock and parts were concrete - presumably to keep the snow off the tracks.Meer informatie
