  • Hiking an iconic mountain

    25 November 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

4:30 am alarm clock - that is the small price to pay if you want to hike Table Mountain. We negotiated with our guide a pick up at the campsite as driving with Jay Jay and parking it was a challenge.
By 6:13, after crossing the city where traffic was building up, we were ready to start the hike. There are hundreds of way to go up the mountain but we let our tour guide choose: she advised to go for India Venster way as the views are spectacular and it is less crowded than the other trails. We hesitated a bit- the hike is classified as difficult as there are a few scrambling passage and metallic ladder and chain to grasp. So you need a head for heights!
The hike was actually easier than thought and scrambling up the rocks was great fun. Along the way, Yvette our guide, gave us plenty of information about the plants - we even saw a mountain goat. We did 700 m of elevation and reached the top at 10:00. plenty of people already were there thanks to the Swiss- made gondola.
After the hike, Yvette dropped us in the waterfront and we had our first view of the city center. We had lunch, walked around a bit but then decided to head back to the camping to relax after such a wonderful hike.

  • Change of Lifestyle

    26 November 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Our last night in our Campervan was under a clear night with plenty of stars and a very bright (almost full) moon. After breakfast we started to clean it roughly and finalized our packing. We drove close to Cape Town Airport where the depot of Maui is located. We returned it after 1420km with only a little bumper damage and Keenan from Maui brought us to our final location, The Bay Hotel at Camps Bay. What a change from our simple campervan life into the posh world of a 5-star hotel😮 we were not really ready for it but the amazing setting just below Tablemountains, the Ocean view and hot and sunny weather convinced us sooner than later. As it was Sunday, Camps Bay was the very very busy as it is known as one of the best beach around Cape Town. A lot of locals come here to enjoy some beachtime. The Ocean was once more very agitated and only a small stretch was open for some dips into the strong waves. Otherwise everyone was around or in the Tidal Pool. The water in there was slightly warmer, but still fresh. The Ocean is around 10 degrees by the way. Ice cold…
We waited for the amazing sunset before we went out for a delicious seafood dinner 😋

  • Cape Town city centre

    27 November 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

In the morning, we took a Uber to a neighbouring bay: Sea Point. From there, we walked along the promenade to the city centre. Took up 2 hours and we saw many joggers and few surfers. It was getting hot! We then explored the centre, through the V&A waterfront and then downtown.
Saw the old historical part, the city streets were busy. We had lunch in a small cafe and then hopped onto the city tour bus (hop-on/off) to see what we had missed, but turned out we had not missed much. Still interesting to hear the information given though.
The bus actually stopped in front of our hotel but we did not stop there. Went back on the waterfront in a arty place for ice cream and then only went back for some pool time and sundowner. Dinner tonight: Sushi!

  • Shopping time

    28 November 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today was declared the shopping day on the V&A waterfront. But first, we wanted to go to Robben Island. Unfortunately, when we got to the waterfront and ferry terminal, we were told that the tours were booked until Friday! Very disappointing. Claudine, 20 years ago, had wanted to go there when in Capetown but lack of money prevented her from doing it. This tome, it was time that stood in our way.
Instead, we went through the small museum at the harbour.
Then we started our shopping tour, the country is very cheap for Swiss tourists and branded clothes are a bargain. We did not buy much though for fear of not fitting it in our luggage.
We visited the silo, an old grain silo which was transformed into an art museum and a hotel at the top. It is very cool what has been done.
We went back to the hotel to change before dinner. We had booked a popular South African speciality restaurant on the waterfront. The food was very good and so was the entertainment.

  • Last day in SA

    29 November 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today was all about relaxing and going nowhere. We managed to get a late check out until 5pm since our flight was at 23:55.
So we first went to the tidal pool for a fresh swim, then onto the beach (no swimming as the ocean was ice cold) then onto the pool.
Then came the time to pack and wait for our Uber.
It has been a wonderful trip, full of diversity and we were blessed with good weather all along. Thank you South Africa!
