6. Day Nikosia (Vine Tour) III

The monastery church Timiou Stavrou (German: "Holy Cross"), newly built in the 19th century, is located in Omondos. Its foundation dates back to the 4th century. The interior is dominated by a magnificent gilded iconostasis from the 18th century. According to tradition, a splinter from the cross of Jesus and a skull relic of the apostle Philip are kept in the church. The monastery houses several museums: the Museum of Byzantine Art, the Museum of Folk Art and an exhibition documenting the Cypriots' struggle for freedom against the British after the Second World War until independence in 1960.Read more
