    1. Day Cappadocia I

    August 17, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

When we arrived in Göreme, we first checked into the hotel and walked to the Sunset Viewpoint. Afterwards we explored Göreme and had a look at the rock installations.

Before we went back to the hotel we went to eat at Kepabzade its not very cheap, but the food is delicious.

Our room has a private sauna and jacuzzi, so we spent the rest of the evening relaxing.

  • 2. Day Cappadocia I

    August 18, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Göreme is a municipality in Cappadocia. The place was called Matiana in Byzantine times and was renamed Göreme in 1928.

The town is the centre of the Göreme National Park. The landscape around Göreme is characterised by striking tuff formations, some of which are hollowed out, the so-called fairy chimneys (Turkish: peri bacaları).

The first Christians used them to lead a devotional life in seclusion, but above all as a hiding place from their enemies (Persians, Romans, Arabs, Mongols). They not only built churches and chapels, which were carved into the rock, but entire residential complexes for several thousand people.

On the second day, we decided to visit the national park early and on the way to see some churches. Particularly noteworthy are the Al Nazar, Karanlik and Dark churches.

At midday sun we went to our accommodation and rested.

In the late afternoon we took a taxi to Pasabag and visited the Fairy Chimney’s. Finally we hiked back the way we came, which took about 1 1/2h. But the surroundings are very picturesque and worth it.

Small criticism: In Göreme there are no classic dolmuses (minibuses), most of them work for agencies and specially booked group tours. Moreover, every sight in nature is monetised.

  • 3. Day Cappadocia V

    August 19, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

After arriving on time from our tour for breakfast, we first ate extensively and rested until the afternoon, as the midday sun is unbearable.

We decided to go to Kaymakli in the afternoon and visit Underground City. We took the bus from Otogar in Göreme and then went to Nevsehir and from there another dolmus to Kaymakli. You can visit 4 of the 8 underground floors.

It was very interesting and almost hard to believe that thousands of people once lived there.

After our trip, I went for a meal and a drink.

    Info:
Kaymaklis ancient name was Enegup. Caves may have first been built in the soft volcanic rock by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, in the 8th–7th centuries BC,. When the Phrygian language died out in Roman times, replaced with Greek, to which it was related, the inhabitants, now converted to Christianity, expanded their caverns adding the chapels and Greek inscriptions.

The city was greatly expanded and deepened in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) era, when it was used for protection from Muslim Arab raids during the four centuries of Arab–Byzantine wars (780–1180). The city was connected with Derinkuyu underground city through miles of tunnels. These cities continued to be used by the Christian inhabitants as protection from the Mongolian incursions of Timur in the 14th century.

After the region fell to the Seljuk Turks of Persia, the cities were used as refuges from the Turkish Muslim rulers, and as late as the 20th century the inhabitants, now called Rûm ('Eastern Romans') by their Ottoman Turkish rulers, were still using the underground cities to escape periodic waves of Ottoman persecution.

  • 3. Day Cappadocia (Balloon-Ride) I

    August 20, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

The hot air balloon tour is emblematic of a trip to Cappadocia. So we looked into the possibility of a tour early on and called various providers. The prices range from 160 to 300 euros, depending on the size of the passengers. We decided to go with Royal Balloons, as they tend to have small groups, a good price and, according to recommendations on various sites, the safest provider. Please note that you have to call one day before you want to do the tour, preferably at 8 a.m., and ask if there are still places available.

We did this and were able to get two places for €190 per person in a group of 16. The groups can be up to 30 people.

We were picked up from our hotel at 04:20 in the morning. Then we had a light breakfast, after which we were driven to the launch site and later back to the hotel from our landing site after champagne was served.

Conclusion: it was breathtaking, worth every penny and an experience of a lifetime.

  • 4. Day Cappadocia (Departure to Adana)

    August 20, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We started the preparation on our journey to Adana with a good breakfast at our hotel. Again, compliments to our hotel for this varied and handcrafted excellent breakfast. There were vegetables, fruits, juices, various egg meals, sweets, cheeses, nuts and much more.

After packing, we arrived at the Otogar on time at 10 am. The departure by bus was set for 10:15 am and should take 3-4 hours with breaks. We paid 240 Lt. per person, which makes about 14 €. For this we had a longer break, cake, tea, coffee, water and a multimedia offer. The seats were spacious.

Once again we say thank you to Cappadocia! We were able to experience a lot, see many historical things and the balloon ride will be hard to top.

The drive to Adana was very nice because you could enjoy the landscape.

A small criticism: Göreme is very crowded and therefore very expensive. All prices are quoted in euros, which for me is fraudulent deception. For example, a bottle of water costs one euro, which is not much. 1 € makes about 18 Lira, you can buy the same bottle for 3 Lira everywhere else, it's not about the Euro, it's about not being fooled as a tourist. That annoyed me personally.
