    Friday night departure

    May 9 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We're headed off to Spain! I have a work trip for the HL7 conference and Igor is coming along for the fun.

After a full day of work, we're at Minneapolis and ready to venture across the ocean. Still a few stops to go as we'll be taking a short one night trip to Barcelona before heading to Madrid for the conference. Hopefully we'll get some good sleep on this MSP > AMS!Read more

  • Barcelona

    May 11 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Upon arriving in Madrid we promptly headed to the train station to enjoy a night in Barcelona before the conference starts Monday. A long trip, made well worth it by the adorable hotel we are staying at!

Cotton House - an autograph collection from Marriott, super cute with a garden courtyard, library, and rooftop. We got in just in time to enjoy a complimentary cocktail on the patio, a surprisingly delicious pornstar martini (alternative choice was espresso martini and that would have been aggressive for 11pm).

Unfortunately the kitchen was closed and attempts at finding late night food close by failed. In good news, McDelivery came through with a double chicken sandwich and BLT big Mac and shaker patatas bravas.

We promptly fell asleep afterwards and woke up to a sunny day this morning! Our morning started with a delicious breakfast buffet, lots of coffee, and a bath, as we both combat jetlag. Later today we'll go see the Basilica!

  • Basílica de la Sagrada Família

    May 11 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We had a fantastic day in Barcelona. After sleeping in and enjoying a delicious breakfast, we set out towards the basilica.

The weather was perfect, and on our walk over, we wandered through a farmers market, soaking in the tree-lined streets and pedestrian-friendly areas.

Walking up to the basilica from the gardens was stunning—much larger and more impressive than we expected. Despite still being under construction, it is beautiful. Since we arrived a bit early for our tour, we stopped at a cozy little wine and tapas spot nearby. We sampled a few local white wines and snacked on some delicious bites—the most interesting being cheese wrapped in anchovy.

When it was time, we headed into the basilica for our tour. The interior was stunning—bright, airy, and filled with light streaming through the stained glass windows. Up in the tower, we got a close look at the fruit sculptures (my favorite!) and enjoyed chatting with other visitors as we made our way through the narrow hallways and winding staircases.

  • First night in Madrid

    May 11 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

We took the train back from Barcelona on Sunday evening as my work conference starts Monday!

After getting checked in, we headed off to dinner at a cute tapas place a few blocks away. Thank goodness for slow service and longer meal times - we started the meal with appetizers and a plan to order entrees later, however the appetizers turned out to be huge and very filling - we barely made it through everything and didn't order a single entree.

All of the food was delicious - artichoke hearts for some veggie, and then much meat: jamon and steak tartare prepared table side!

We celebrated the last night of the weekend/vacation with a rooftop cocktail.

  • Work week in Madrid

    May 12 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

The work week is in full swing and I'm at the conference 8-5 most days. Igor is working half days and I'm quite jealous of his morning nap and afternoon walks!

The conference is in the same hotel as where we're staying and so it's a very convenient. We also get breakfast included and so each morning we get to eat together before heading off to our separate mornings. A huge breakfast spread with amazing garlic mushrooms, ham and cheese, and tasty potatoes.

Luckily the days here are long and when we head out for dinner the sun is still out and shining! We spent Monday evening eating some tapas and exploring the gardens by the palace. So many beautiful big trees and large parks around, and so many cute dogs to watch!

  • Angelita

    May 13 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

While there is no planned Michelin star restaurant this trip, we were very excited for our dinner tonight and it did not disappoint!

Dinner is at a little wine and cocktail bar called Angelita. A quick 15 minute walk from the hotel. We started our evening with a pre dinner cocktail at Santa Maria about half way there - very cool fat washed cocktails. Igor got a fancy bloody Mary and I got the smoky punch, a cool whiskey cocktail.

We showed up for our 7pm dinner - aggressively early for the Spanish 🤣 we quickly landed on doing the tasting menu as the menu all looked amazing and was too hard to choose. I did the wine pairing and Igor ordered some of their creative cocktails and we mix and matched.

Some highlights: artichoke with scallops, the local orange wine and sherry, incredible bread, and an awesome olive and tomato cocktail.

  • Tapas por favor

    May 14 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We spent the rest of the week enjoying all the tapas we could get our hands on. Along with all the local wines - some favorite grapes included Albariño for Igor, and Xarel•lo for me.

While I don't see us switching to 9pm dinner times, we sure did love the laid back culture and snacks offered at every wine bar. Some favorite snacks were the cheese board and mushroom coquettes!Read more
