  • Day 12 - Second Day In Florence

    22 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

‍When I returned to the room after breakfast, John was on the phone.  It turned out that during the evening Matt's fever Rose to 104 and the aides called 911 and Matt was transport to Alexandria Hospital.  He was admitted to the ICU there (John didn't mention that Matt was in the ICU until later in the afternoon when I asked him about the phone call).  John spoke to the nurse who told him that they thought the fever was because of a urinary tract infection.  John provided or health insurance information and said he would call them later in the day to get an update.

We had the day to ourselves to explore, but talking with the hospital resulted in us getting out later than planned.  We decided to go to the Cathedral Museum first.  We learned a lot about the contribution of the Duomo.  As we were leaving the museum John noticed the skies are darkening, so we returned to the hotel to pick up our umbrella and the rain ponchos we had been given in Rome.  While we were in the hotel we heard a lot of thunder.

We decided to get lunch before going to the next museum.  We selected two restaurants near the hotel, but in the direction we would be heading to the museum.  We found the first restaurant on our list easily enough and were seated right away.  We were given menus and began selecting what we wanted to eat and drink.  But no one came to our table to take off order.  Then I noticed a table that had been empty when we were seated who had drinks and bread.  We waited a few minutes longer and then left.  Our second choice restaurant seated us; provided menus and told us about the specials; and came back and took our order.  Meanwhile, it began to rain pretty hard.  Our meal was good and we finished when it looked like the rain had subsided.  Unfortunately, it was just a false sense of security, because it started pouring within a about a block.  We tried sharing an umbrella, but I just got soaked, so we both stopped and put on our rain ponchos.

At the Galileo Museum we stuffed our backpack, ponchos and umbrella in a locker, and purchased our tickets.  We were able to download the Museum app and because I had my Bluetooth headphones with me I could listen to commentary on each of the rooms.  John was only able to read text.  However, most of the display cases include information in English.  We toured the museum long enough for my sandals to dry out (no need for the hair dryer).

We completed the tour and returned to the hotel to shower and meet the group at 5:30 for a tour of the Ufitzi Gallery.  The Ufitzi was very impressive and I got to see several paintings I have seen in books.

After the tour, John and I walked to the river and crossed the bridge with all the gold shops just to look.  We considered having dinner on the other side of the river, but since we weren't very hungry, we decided to get soup or something light near too the hotel and to get some gelato at the shop or guide recommended (Perché no!). So we went back to the Yellow Bar.  I had vegetable soup and John had bread soup.  Both were closer to stews than soup.  I enjoyed mine, but there were too many green vegetables in his four hours liking.  I also had a bottle of the Toscana beer.  Then we had for the Gelato store where I got black cherry and hazelnut and John got black cherry and a cream.  I liked mine a lot, John thought his was just okay, since he prefers Lemon and they didn't have that.  We returned to the hotel and John called the hospital to get an update on Matt.  Matt's fever had gone up again and they still didn't know what the bacteria was, yet.  Matt was asleep, so we didn't get to speak with him.  Then it was time to pack so we could leave for Venice in the morning.  Looking forward to Venice.

  • Day 11 - First Day In Florence

    21 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

‍At around 3 am John's phone rang and it was the aides from Merica House where Matt lives called to let us know that Matt was running a fever. John suggested they give him aspirin or Tylenol. He also told them that we were in Italy and 6 hours ahead of them, but to call us if the situation got worse (not that we thought it would.

After breakfast, we enjoyed a wonderful lecture on At and History by Elaine Ruffolo, an Art History expert. Her specialty was Economic Art History and she teaches at the Syracuse University in Florence.

After the lecture, we met our guides and walked to the Accademia to see Michael Angelo's sculpture of David (among other statues).  After seeing the David statue, our guide took us to the Duomo and then to the Piazza della Repubblica.  Then we had free time to explore on our own.  We decided to get lunch first and we went to the Yellow Bar.   Prior to being seated, they showed us where their homemade pasta is made.  I had their pasta stuffed with ricotta and spinach. It was wonderful.  And I had my first Italian beer - Toscana.  John had a pizza with ham and Tonic water.

Our plan was to visit the Galileo Museum and the Cathedral Museum after lunch.  However, both Museums were closed on Tuesdays.  So instead we wandered around for a while and then gathered up our dirty laundry and found a nearby self-serve laundromat.  To kill some time and to get change, I found a little shop where I could get fresh squeezed orange juice (squeezed while I watched).  Once our clothes were did, we returned to the hotel to shower and change for dinner.

Dinner was at Restaurant Paoli, a medieval restaurant, where we enjoyed a typical Tuscan dinner.  We could again select three courses.  I decided to forego pasta since I had had it for lunch and instead chose a "vegetable pie" that was more like spinach torte with no crust for my first course.   For my second course, I selected the beef filet with a balsamic and mustard sauce.  It was delicious and very tender.  For the third course I selected dessert from the dessert cart.  The best part of the dessert was that I could get small pieces of more than one of the dessert.  I selected the chocolate balls that were like round Nepolians in a chocolate sauce and I selected a custard torte.  Both were wonderful.   And of course there was plenty of wine (everyone at our table had the white one - although all of us had either beef or pork).

We returned to our hotel around 9:30 pm. I read for a while and then turned in.

  • Day 10 - Cinque Terre and Florence

    20 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

‍Today we left the hotel at 8:30 am and headed to Cinque Terre and then on to Florence.   We took the tour bus to La Spezia.  Then we got on a boat and sailed to Vernazza the 4th City of Cinque Terre.  We had a guide on the boat who told us all about Cinque Terre and he also gave us a short introductory your of Vernazza.  John and I decided to climb the tower  (150 steps) to get some good pictures of the city.  Then we found a little restaurant and bought pizza and lemon sodas. While we were eating I saw people stopping over a rope into an area with a No Trespassing sign. When I finished eating, I went to see where everyone was going.  It turned out the area lead to a beach area.  When we finished lunch, we scouted out the location of recommended Gelato shop.  John got lemon and strawberry and I got pistachio and cinnamon.  Cinnamon is now my new favorite.

For the let of the trip from Cinque Terre to Florence we took the train. When we arrived in Florence, we got on a bus that took us to our tour bus and the tour bus took us close to the hotel.  Near the hotel, we said goodbye to our driver Daniele.  We got our room keys and were taken to our room.  Our luggage was waiting on our room.  We had a connecting room and one of the couples (Deb & Pete) had the other room that connected to ours.  We discovered that the connecting does were not locked and if we tried to close either door it opened the other for.  Pete called the front desk and they sent someone up to lock both doors.  Then we showered and for ready for dinner.

We walked the 5 minutes to the restaurant, Il Caminetto.   Our reservation was for about 7:45 pm. We could select the courses.  I selected pasta stuffed with ricotta and spinach, the filet in chianti wine sauce and for chocolate candies and Sherry.   John chose the filet in chianti wine sauce, roasted potatoes and Pana Cotta.  Florence recommended we ask for our steaks medium or they would come out too rare.    She was correct, mine was cooked perfectly.  The filet was high (almost twice the size of a filet in the States).  And of course we had all the wine we wanted.  Whoever told me they had small plates in Italy hasn't been here recently.  We headed back to the hotel at about 10:20 pm.  We relaxed for a bit then headed to bed.

  • Day 9 - Tuscan Countryside & Viareggio

    19 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

‍‍‍I went to breakfast at 7 am.  I had pain yogurt with honey and pumpkin seeds.  We boarded the bus at 8:30 am. We drive through the Tuscan Countryside.  We took a detour so that we could get a picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

At around noon we stopped at an Italian Manor house. We were greeted with prosecco; Parmesan cheese (with honey); brocheta Witness chicken liver pate; brocheta with mushroom pate; olives and prochetta. Then we went to the table where we had smelt pasta with bougenaise sauce.  And wine, of course.

Then we returned to the bus and arrived in Viareggio at around 4 pm.  We were welcomed to the hotel with a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade.  Instead of waiting for our luggage to be brought up to the room, we went across the street to the beach.  I walked to the end of the beach, took off my shoes and walked in the water for a few minutes so I could say I had been in the Adriatic Sea.  Then I cleaned my feet, put on my shoes and John and I walked down the beach avenue.  Then we returned to the hotel showered, changed and headed down to dinner.

The restaurant staff recommended that I avoid any dishes on the menu that had not been made in house.  I ended up selecting the shrimp ”cocktail” which was actually shrimp on a bed of shredded cabbage and drizzled with a mayonnaise and spice sauce.  For my second course I chose the Minestrone soup. For my third course I selected the grilled salmon with a side of artichoke mousse and a side of grilled potatoes.  For dessert I had Panna Cotta. Muy entire meal was delicious.   And, of course, we had wine.  I have been photographing all bottles of the wines we have been drinking since I can get many of them in the States.  John has liked all whites we have had so far.

After dinner we headed up to our room to pack for luggage pickup at 7:30 am.  Then, after reading a bit, I headed to bed.

  • Day 8 - Assisi

    18 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

‍‍‍Breakfast at this hotel was self service.  Without eggs to order, there were fewer choices.  But they had yogurt, honey and nuts so I was fine.  And being able to get coffee without waiting was was an added benefit.  There was a bowl of brown eggs that I had assumed were hard boiled eggs, but when I read the sign next to the eggs, I realized that the eggs were raw and you had to use the appliance near the eggs that was evidently an egg cooker.  I was so glad I read the sign before I cracked the egg.

We left the hotel at 9 am and headed for Assisi.  On the ride to Assisi we learned a lot about Francis of Assisi.  We meet or guides when we got of the bus.  Our first stop was the Basilica of St. Francis. The Basilica is actually a cathedral and a tomb for St. Francis and his four friends who became monks with St. Francis.  The tomb also includes a simple church.  The art work was beautiful.  Once we finished touring the Basilica, we returned to the bus Android drive a short distance to Historic Assisi.  We drive because the walk from the Basilica to Assisi was extremely steep.  After a short tour we had free time.  Our first order of business was to get some lunch.  Porcuetta (sliced cooked ham) was recommended.  John and I each ordered a panini with flat bread.  The sandwiches were so large we could have easily done with a single sandwich.  In fact, I only ended up eating about 2/3 of mine.  After that we toured a small archaeological museum.  It was very interesting.  It contains the ruins below the temple that was turned into a church.  After touring the museum, John got a soda and finished his porcuetta panini and I got a scoop of pastachio and a scoop of strudel gelato. Then it was time to return to the hotel.

Six of us had chosen an optional tour of Perugia.  So, after a quick break we returned to the bus and headed for Perugia.  The town was a mixture of the original Perugian buildings of the Middle Ages most of which now house commercial businesses and shopes.  Although the architecture was different it reminded me of Bath, England.  At the end of the tour, we opted to return to the bus because it was beginning to look like rain.

When we returned, I showered and changed and headed to the optional wine tasting.  John opted for a short nap.  We were given tips on how to evaluate wines and some tips on food and wine pairing.  Then we a all went to the dining room for dinner.  John was waiting for us there.  Tonight I chose the fettuccini and truffle pasta, veal rump with potatoes and dessert with pastachio angel food cake and white chocolate.

After dinner we walked around the grounds again.  The two teens from Canada showed us address of the hotel grounds we had missed the night before including a small crypt.

Then we returned to our rooms to pack up and head to bed.

  • Day 7 - Orvieto and Umbria

    17 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

‍‍‍‍‍We left the hotel and headed for Orvieto.  We toured the Cathedral there.  The Cathedral was beautiful inside and out. We were told to plan to take a picture when we met up to head back to the bus around 3 pm.  At that time the sun striking the gold mosaic pieces would make the church glitter.

After the tour of the church, John & I toured the Etruscan Museum. The cost was 10 Euros per person. I asked if there was a Senior Rate.  There was a senior rate and it was 3 Euros per person (a savings of 14 Euros).  It does pray to ask.  The Museum was nice, but there was no English translations for the posted explanations.  But, that was not a big deal since most of the artifacts were obvious and I used the Google Translate photo feature to translate what I couldn't figure out.  I was moving faster through the museum than John, so when I finished the museum, I headed to the restaurant and John followed when he finished.  Lunch was another"light" meal with a 1st course of 2 pastas; 2nd course of beef stew, cooked eggplant and zucchini, and potatoes; and for dessert chocolate mousse.

At 3 pm, it was cloudy, so the church did not glitter.  So we returned to our bus and headed for the country villa we would be staying at.  After we got our luggage we changed clothes and returned downstairs for a history of the manor followed by a musical recital (very nice).  There it was time to head to the dining room for dinner.  I had a warm mushroom salad; followed by a grilled pork meal with arrugala; for dessert I had a crepe filled with gelato; and, of course prosecco andred and white wine.

It had been a long day, so after a shower, I went to bed.

  • Day 6 - Second Day in Rome

    16 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

‍‍‍We headed for St. Peter's Basilica at 8:30 am.  Our "skip the line" tickets, along with the early hour meant that the crowds were not too bad.  The Pieta was still impressive even though behind glass.

Ricardo pointed out an optical illusion where the distance from the front of the Basilica to the altar looks farther away when you are at the rear of the Basilica looking toward the the altar than the distance from the altar looking toward the entrance to the Basilica.  I didn't have the heart to tell him the distances looked roughly the same.

After the tour of the Basilica, we had some free time.  I ended up purchasing two necklaces.  Then we went out to take a few pictures. The crowdshad gottenlarger. While we stood taking. pictures, several people tried to sell up" skip the line" tickets.  I wished I had a sign that said. "Already been there and done that."

When were returned fromSt. Peter's we walked to a nearby restaurant and had pizza  and then walked to the Divinci Museum.  It was an enjoyable hands on museum.   On the way back to the hotel we stopped for gelato and then looked into the church next to the hotel.  Then we got ready for a private after hours tour of the Sistine Chapel Museum.  I had not realized that a museum was also housed in the building of the Sistene Chapel. The Museum includes tapestries, paintings, articles from popes and some archaeological artefacts.  We also saw some of the rooms painted by Rafael.  Ricardo described the rivalry between Rafael and Michael Angelo as well as Michael Angelo's fustration with being "commanded" by the Pope to paint the story of Creation on the Sistene Chapel ceiling.  The ceiling was more impressive than I imagined.  When I think of the ceiling I always think of the fresco of the Creation of Man.  I didn't realize how many other frescos make up the ceiling.  I also learned that the fresco of the Last Judgement was painted later and Michael Angelo completed it, a lesser known painter was brought in to cover the naked parts below the waist of the men.

When we finished the tour, we had a surprise light dinner in the courtyard with prosecco and wine. What a special treat.  Then it was back to the hotel to pack to leave tomorrow for Umbria.

  • Day 5 - First Day in Rome

    15 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

‍‍‍‍‍‍Today we got to "sleep in".   We had free time until 2:15 pm.  Of course, John didn't want to start out until around 10 am.  Today is a holiday, so we had been warned that some sights might be closed.  But the upside was fewer crowds.  Our first idea was to see if we could schedule a Segway Tour, but the the tours were 3.5 hours and started too late for us.   So we decided to visit the Capitolini Museum. The Museum includes an impressive collection of statues and bronzes and a collection of Roman art.  The Museum is housed on 2 floors and is not very large, but it allowed us sufficient time to view all the exhibits.  Afterwards we headed for the top floor so John could get lunch (I was still full from lunch.

We returned to the hotel and then met the group for our two scheduled tours to the Pantheon and the Colosseum. We debated on whether to bring an unbrella, but decided not to since 1) the forecast was for no rain until evening and 2) the sky was clear & blue.

We met our local guide, Ricardo, and then walked the very short distance to the Pantheon.  However, because of the holiday, the Pantheon was closed.  We were told we could see the Pantheon on Thursday.   Ricardo still told us a lot about the Pantheon before we got on the bus to travel to the Colosseum.  Just before heading to the Colosseum we stopped for a group picture.  At the Colosseum we got our tickets and headed for the entrance. Before we could ge,t to the entrance, the skies opened and it started to pour.  It was definitely a major storm with thunder, lightening, wind and rain.  Only one of us had an umbrella and one person had a rain jacket and there was no place to get out of the rain.  Finally, we got in and huddled in an area where we were somewhat protected.   Our tour director, Florence, went out to purchase umbrellas or ponchos for us. John & I and a few others decided to brave the rain (since we were already soaked) to see the Colosseum.   Then we were told we should head for the exit where Florence had ponchos for everyone.

Once we all donned our ponchos we headed to the bus.  Once back on the bus we returned to the hotel.  But our adventure was not over.  There was water on the floor in our bedroom.  I called housekeeping and eventually a technician came to try to figure out where the water came from. The mystery was not solved, but the floor & wall were cleand up and we  showered and changed.  The rain stopped for our walk to dinner.  Despite the rain we were all in good spirits (helped along with prosecco, wine, good food and gelato).

  • Day 4 - Pompei

    14 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

‍‍Today our bags were picked up from our room at 7am. I had already headed down to breakfast while John got dressed (we were to meet in the lobby at 7:50 am).  At 7.30, I returned to the room to discover John was getting readyg the flashlight on his phone.  Right after the luggage was picked up, the power to the room was turned off. So I ran downstairs to tell the Front Desk that the power was off and let Florence, our tour director know our situation.  The hotel sent someone up, but he could not resolve the problem. So John finished up in the dark and our group got on the bus.

Pompei was impressive. To ensure that we could go into some othe more impressive houses that limited group size, our group was divided into two smaller groups.  Our guide was good.  What makes Pompei so impressive is the size of the town.  We spent about 2 hours there.  We ate lunch at a nearby restaurant.  The food was delicious and plentiful (and included wine). I have started taking pictures of the wines I like in hopes I can get them ahen I get home.

We got to our hotel in Rome around 4:30, but our luggage didn't get to our room for another 30 minutes.  Once we got our luggage, we showered and dressed and met up with the group to walk to the restaurant.  The wine was good, but the service was very slow and many of the meals were not good. We each could choose 3 courses. I chose a pasta (fettuccine with truffles), a beef entree and canoli for dessert.  my dishes were all good.  John was disappointed in his.  He thought the meat was not a very good quality.  one guy at our table, Larry, ordered a pork dish that was all fat.  Then the recommended dessert which was supposed to be a chocolate tort with chocolate sauce and blueberries that almost everyone but me ordered came with no chocolate sauce or berries and was evidently very dry.

We barely finished our dinner when it was time to head for our little vans to take us on a Rome by Night tour.  14 of us were supposed to go, but a backed out, so only 12 of us went - 8 in one van and 4 in our van. We first went to the Trivoli Fountain. It was still pretty crowded at around 9.30 pm.  Then we drove around the Colossium.  There was no one there.  Our guide, Antonio was very good. He told us a lot of information about Rome as we drove us around.   We also crossed the Tiberius River and saw some of Rome on that side.  Our final stop was St. Peter's Basilica.  The four of us from our van were able to walk around with no one else around and take pictures.  That tour was well worth the extra cost.  When we got back to the hotel at after 11 pm it was time to relax before heading to bed.

  • Day 3 - The Amalfi Coast

    13 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Day 3 - The Amalfi Coast

‍Today we left the hotel at 7:30 am.  We drove along the Amalfi Coast. We made a stop to visit a church along the way. After the tour, we all went to a gelato store.  I got Pistacheo gelato and John got lemon cream gelato.  Then we drove on to Ravello. We had lunch in a small restaurant near the center of the town. The food was good, but there were problem for the owner and staff getting the special meals for those of us with allergies.   The meal was 3 courses - pasta with meat sauce & pasta with red sauce; chicken caccatore with green beans and potatoes; lemon sorbet in a lemon shell.  It was a lot of food for a lunch.

After lunch we took a tour of an area where a stage overhangs a mountainside.  Then we climbed a 200 stair tower that overlooked the valley below.  After that we headed to the meeting spot and did a bit of window shopping.  There was a shop there called Wine and Drugs that we couldn't resist looking in.  The store also sold signs/plaques.  My favorite was "Alcohol won't solve all your problems, but neither will milk or water."

We didn't get back to the hotel until after 6:30 pm.  We showered and John look for a pizzaria.  We found one a short walk from the hotel. The pizza was good and we finished with gelato.  The restaurant provided a free shot of Lemoncello for each of us.  I gave mine to John.

  • Day 2 - Trip to Ercolano

    12 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Day 2 - Trip to Ercolano

‍I started the day with the hotel's breakfast buffet while John slept in.  At 10 am we headed for the Train Station. We purchased tickets and figured out which train took us to Ercolano.  The train was about 10 minutes late arriving. I wasn't paying attention at the 1st stop, but the next stop was not on the schedule nor were the next few. It turns out the schedule doesn't list all the steps. But there is a diagram near the doors that shows all the steps. After the initial fear that we were on the wrong train, I was able to relax  and enjoy the train ride.  At Ercolano it was a straight shot to the Herculaneum Excavations.  Our guide, Felicia, met us at the ticket office and gave us a little overview, before we headed in.  Herculaneum was destroyed in the same volcano erruption as Pompei, but was covered with a type of lava that preserved skeletans, furniture and other artifacts.  Felicia, who is also an Art Historian & Restorer was excellent. We spent about 2 hours at Herculaneum then we got lunch and headed back to the train. We got back to the heal at about 4:30 to discover that the Welcome Reception was moved up from 6pm to 5:30pm, so we had to rush to get ready.  There are 26 people in our group including 2 teenagers. The two teenagers are very mature. I guess I am going to have to reassess my opinion of teenagers.  Each member of the group (or a member of traveling companions) introduced themselves and told 1) where they were from 2) how many Tauck tours they had been on before and 3) why they had chosen this tour.  After the intros and some info from our Tour Director, we headed on foot to the restaurant for dinner. The food was wonderful and we enjoyed the wine.  We sat with a couple (Bretna and Lonie) who had been picked up at the airport with us. I enjoyed getting to know them better.  After dinner we all headed back to the hotel since we had to get up early (breakfast at 6:45am and on the road at 7:30am).  It was a good first day.Baca selengkapnya

  • Heading to Italy

    11 Agustus 2018, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Day 1 - Travel Day and Arrival in Sorrento

‍‍‍I packed my suitcase last night and helped John by rolling up his shirts and pants.  I also walked to grocery store to get a couple things for John.  The Washington Flyer picked us up at 2pm and we were at the airport by 2:30pm. Our Global Entry status got us Tsa Pre so getting through security was relatively easy.

We arrived at Naples pretty much on time. The luggage of one person in our pickup group was lost so while we waited for them I got money. Then we headed for our hotel in Sorrento.

Once we got settled in our room, we showered and changed, got appetizers for dinner & went to the pier for a sunset boat ride around the Bay of Naples.  Our sailor & guide did a great job. We learned a lot about the area around Sorrento. We tried Lemoncello (not my favorite) and then prosecco (Riondo) and chips & pretcels as we watched the sun set. A nice first day in Italy.

  • Last Day of Touring

    6 Maret 2018, Israel ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today is our final day in the Holy Land. Our first stop today was Ein Kerem where Zachariah and Elizabeth lived. The area included a church with a small garden and in the garden was a plaque on a wall in the garden that describes the prophecy of Jesus.

From there we went to the Bible Lands Museum, which turned out to be my favorite that day. It is an archeological museum that explores the culture of the people's mentioned in the Bible including the Egyptians, Canaanites, Philistines, Arameans, Hittites, Elamites, Phoenicians and Persians. We only visited a small part of the museum. I wish we could have spent more time there.

Then it was on to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum. It was very impressive, but it was hard to look at all the atrocities. But the Garden of the Righteous Among the Nations was beautiful and impressive. The garden honors the thousands of non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Their names are engraved on plaques in the garden and arranged by country.

From the we headed for our final stop - the Garden Tomb. It is the other site that is said to be what the tomb of Jesus is located. The Garden that includes the tomb was beautiful. Before going to the Tomb, everyone on the tour came together for a service and Communion. Bishop Sharma Lewis lead the service and preached. Her sermon was very moving especially where we were. After the service we headed for the tomb. The line was very long and it took us more than 30 minutes to get in to see the inside of the tomb. It was well worth the wait. I still haven't figured out which site I think it's the actual one.

The entire group had an early dinner and then we headed to to our room to pack, put our luggage out and go to bed. We have to depart for the airport at 1:15 am. Ugh.

It has been a good trip. I am so glad I was able to go. Knowing what the land the scriptures took place in, will engage my understanding of what I read. The trip has been a blessing.

  • Sixth Day of Touring

    6 Maret 2018, Israel ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

Today we visited sites within the old city of Jerusalem. Our first step was the archaeological site of the Pool of Bethesda We walked the Via Dolorosa. The road of the Via Dolores is very narrow. There are shops along the road which a reminder that except for the products the road is very much the way it was when Jesus walled the roads. There were also cars on the road. It is not really what goes world have encountered, but He would have encountered donkies.

The last site on the Via Dolorasa is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. When we got to their to see the tomb, our guide, Victor, asked if we wanted to stand in line for an hour. The answer was a resounding "yes!". Seeing the tomb and all that went before His death was very moving. The remainder of Lent and Easter will be different for me this year.

After lunch we went to the Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall). I did not know before that there are separate sections for men and women. We were invited to write out a prayer and put it in a crevices in the wall (which I did). Twice a year the prayers are gathered up and buried in the Mount of Olives.

After dinner we attended the Sound and Light Show at the Tower of David. It is a celebration of the Jewish history and the Jewish Temple done through sound and images projected on the walls of the Jewish Museum. The show presents the history from 1006 BCE to the present It was very impressive.

  • Fifth Day of Touring

    4 Maret 2018, Israel ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Today was a more leisurely day. The weather was a bit warmer today. We were about 10 or 20 minutes late heading out, but traffic was light, so were able to make good time. I really enjoyed Masada. We took a cable car to the top. Masada, based on the ruins, is an impressive place. And the history of Masada is just as impressive. It was a bit crowded, but most of the groups tried to give each other room.

After lunch (a Falafel sandwich for me) we headed for the Dead Sea. We got into the Dead Sea on a public beach. Pat and Janie decided to pass on floating on the Dead Sea, but they kept our backpacks. Janice took some pictures. Marian & I decided to skip spreading mud on our body. The area we floated in was not very deep, so it was easier to start floating. Joyce, one of the women on my bus, was afraid of the water, but didn't want to miss the experience of floating in the Dead Sea. I told her I would hold her hand and not let go until she was floating. It only took a minute for her to float and she was so excited when she felt herself floating. We were all whooping and cheering and laughing when she started floating. We all stayed in the Dead Sea for about an hour. After showering and getting dressed we headed back for dinner.

Yesterday we got our group pictures. Marian and I have been working to match the photos in the group picture with the names onlitare received in our travel packet.

Tomorrow we tour Jerusalem. I am looking forward to seeing the city where so much in Scripture took place.

  • Fourth Day of Touring

    3 Maret 2018, Israel ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

Today was a very full day with lots of walking. Marian & I headed down to breakfast at 6am. I think the food and selections are better here at the Olive Tree Hotel.

Our first stop was a shop where high quality olive wood products are made and sold in Bethlehem. They also sell jewelry there. Although everything was of high quality, it was also expensive even with the 15% to 25% discount. I ended up buying two small olive wood necklaces (w/o chains). The two cost me $2. I think we spent well over an hour there. I would have liked to have spent more time at the sights.

Our next step was the Church of the Nativity. Currently the church is in the midst of major restorations. During the restorations Some mosaics on the walls were discovered. These mosaics are made of gold leaf and small fragments of glass called tessera. The ones we could see were beautiful. The line to see the place where Jesus was born was very long and moved very slowly (it took us almost an hour to get through the line). The long wait and jostling was beginning to wear on everyone's nerves. But then you were seeing and touching the spot and nothing else mattered. It was a deeply emotional experience for all of us on our bus. Many of the people were brought to tears. Although I didn't cry, I was surprised at how deeply I was affected. After that are looked at some more of the restoration.

From there we went to lunch and then went to the Shepherd's field where the shepherds heard the good news of Jesus' birth. There is a church on the property. Visiting these two sites will broaden how I experience Christmas and the images that will come to mind when I think about the birth of Christ.

From there we drove to Mt. Zion to see the Upper Room and the house of Caiaphas. The original building that housed the upper room was destroyed. It was replaced by another church. The original upper and the house of Caiaphas were in the same area. Jesus would have walked down the same path to get to the Garden of Gethsemane freely that he walked backup in chains. In Caiaphas' house we saw the jail Jesus was lowered into before he appeared before Pilot.

When we returned to the hotel, we had a little more than 15 minutes to change cloths legit ready to leave for our dinnerina Christian home. There was a long line to get on the elevator. I thought it would be quicker to take the stairs. It was quicker to take the stairs, but since we are on the 8th floor, it was anything but easy. Marian switched to an elevator on the 4th floor, but stubborn me continued onto the 8th floor.

109 members of the tour had dinner with 22 families. Marian, Pat, Janie and I had dinner together with one of the families. The dinner with the family was a wonderful experience. We met the wife, mother, 2 daughters (one married and one engaged), a son-in-law, a frience and the granddaughter. The food was very good and the conversation very informative. The family is a Christian Palestinian family. It was enlightening to hear them describe life for them. I really enjoyed this dinner experience.

All in all the day was great. I just wish I had not felt so rushed to get to the dinner.

  • Third Day of Touring

    2 Maret 2018, Israel ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

This morning we loaded up our luggage and headed for Jerusalem. Our first stop was Qumran. There we saw the archaeological site of the Jewish sect called the Essenes. They are assumed to be the ones who wrote the Scrolls. We also saw one of the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.

From Qumran we headed for a restuarant in Jericho. After lunch we visited the Jericho ruins. We saw a portion of a wall and a part of a watchtower. These ruins overlook present-day Jericho.

Then we returned to the bus and headed for Jerusalem. We drove to the Mount of Olives where we took a group picture (our group consisted of the 43 people on our bus - the Blue Bus). From there we walked down to a place where we could see the walled city of Jerusalem. Our guide, Victor, pointed out many of the Biblical landmarks like the places where Jesus was then to be judged, firstgth Jews and later by Pontus Pilot. Victori provided both the history, the current state other sites and the Scripture.

Then we continued down to the Garden of Gethsemane. The name comes from Gat + Shemanim which means rOlive Oil Press. It was actually a grotto. Next to the garden is a church.

It is hard to explain what I felt when I arrived in Jerusalem and later saw the Garden of Gethsemane. I was in Jerusalem!! I am looking forward to visiting all the places Jesus walked.

From Gethsemane we headed to the hotel. The Olive Tree Hotel is very nice. At this hotel Janie & Pat are in the room next to us.

  • Second Day of Touring

    2 Maret 2018, Israel ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

The day did not have an auspicious start. We were late leaving for the boat that would sail around the Sea of Galilee because one person on our bus got on another bus by mistake. We were given geography information which helped us get our bearings with respect to the towns that border on or near the Sea of Galilee. Then we had devotions and some singing. It was a wonderful way to start the day. Marian, Janie, Pat D. and dpurchase small pendants.

From there we traveled to the Mount of Beatitudes. It was a beautiful place. There is a church on the site and an extensive garden and grounds. It was a beautiful place for contemplation. I walked and took pictures by myself. The travel days before the actual tour are hectic and tiring. This place gave me the opportunity to rest and the adapbreath- a chance to slow down and enjoy just "being". It wasn't "real" Contemplative" Prayer, but it gave my soul a time to breath; a time to rest.

The third place we traveled to was Magdala. The town of Magdala was invaded by the Romansin 67AD and buried. It was discovered in 2009. Our guide in Magdala was an Irish nun. She had a way of describing life during Jesus' time that enlarged my understanding of the incidents described in Scripture. Along with the archaeological site there is a building called "Duc in Atium" which means "Put out into the Deep". The building includes four small chapels with beautiful paintings of some of the encounters Jesus had during His ministry in Galilee. The one that I found most moving was a painting depicting the hemorrhaging woman who touches the hem of Jesus' clothing. The picture shows the feet of two people and a woman's hand touching the hem of one of those feet. I found to be powerful painting.

After visiting Magdala we went to a restuarantfor lunch. Most of us had talapia. lt was very good, but it was served whole. It was a challenge for me and others to eat the fish with it's head on and it's eye looking at you. The fish was accompanied by a cabbage salad, the Israelieversion of a bloomin' onion and fries. For dessert we had dates.

After lunch, we traveled toTabgha. It is situated on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. It is traditionally accepted as the place of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes and the feeding of the 5000. From there we traveled to Caperhaum and then to the Chapel of the Primacy of St. Peter. Our last stop was the Yardenit Baptimal Site. Four people on our bus remembered their baptism with an immersion in the Jordan River. Marian, Janie, Pat D. and I used the time to do some window shopping in the gift shop.

I have packed up. Tomorrow after touring we will drive to Jerusalem. Our luggage needs to be outside our door by 6: 50 am. Breakfast is at 6:30am (as usual). And we head to Qumran, our first step at 8am. Heading to bed.

  • Holy Land-First Day of Touring

    28 Februari 2018, Israel ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

We began with singing and a devotion. Then we got a lot of historical information. Although I probably won't remember everything, the information gave me a better perspective of the places we went. Although the churches in Nazareth and Cana were interesting and both included more archealogical objects, they were more crowded. They were the last sites are visited. My favorite sites were Caesarea and Megiddo. Caesarea is on the Mediterranean Sea. The amphitheater was impressive especially with the backdrop of the sea. The engineering that was done to create the amphitheater, the hippadrone specular stands and the area for ships to dock was impressive. Near the hippadrone were public outdoor toilets built at the same time as the hippadrone spectator stands. Meggido was also an outdoor site. There were several archaeological excavations. We saw some stone animal troughs. It gave me a better idea of the manager Jesus was placed in after His birth. There was an optional trek through the Megiddo Water system. We had to climb down 187 stairs and then go backup 135 stairs. I took it on as a challenge. The most disconcerting part was that a portion of the stairway down was in the dark. We were all a bit rattled until we reached a lighted area again.Baca selengkapnya

  • Finally in Tiberius

    28 Februari 2018, Jerman ⋅ 🌙 14 °F

We finally arrived at the hotel at around 11pm. It was definitely a looong trip. The hotel had cold plates in our rooms. The rooms are nice. I am glad I don't need a hairdryer, because the one in our bathroom doesn't seem sufficient to try anyone's hair. Marian and I are all unpacke and ready for our first full day with Holy Land. Breakfast is at 6:30 am and we leave at 8 am. Tomorrow we visit Caesarea, Megiddo, Nazareth and Cana. It is after midnight and I need to go to bed so I will be ready for the day of touring (Marian is already asleep).Baca selengkapnya

  • Heading to Israel.

    27 Februari 2018, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 23 °F

I am looking forward to the trip. I am excited to see what God will show me and how He will speak to my heart.

Marian and I got a pleasant surprise at the airport - Tsa - Pre on our boarding pass. Although we are in economy seats, they are pretty comfortable. The flight is not very full, so Marian & Inow have 2 seats to ourselves. Another unexpected perk has been free wine. I chose a German white wine both as a before dinner"cocktail" and I had a glass with dinner. We are supposed to have access to free WiFi, but I have not been able to successfully connect to it. I didn't really have a need for it, I was just curious. Grenal will try to see if I can get some sleep.

I watched "Three Billboards over Ebbings Missouri". It was good but strange.

  • Day 8 - Blenheim Palace & Oxford

    16 Agustus 2017, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Our first this morning was to Blenheim Palace. The Palace is the residence of the Dukes of Marlborough. The first Duke of Marlborough was John Churchill. Although not a Duke, Winston Churchill a member of that family line.

The tour guide and the house were wonderful. We got an early entrance and thus were able to beat the crowds. After the tour we were free to explore the grounds and the other exhibits. My favorite was the exhibit called Destiny. This exhibit gave an overview of John Churchill's tactics in battle and explained how the victories of the 1st Duke inspired Winston Churchill during his time as a political leader. Winston Churchill often said that it was his destiny to follow the path he did.

After the exhibit and walking around a portion of the vast gardens, we had lunch outside at the on-site cafe. The bees nearby were drawn to our sodas. As a bit of entertainment (for me) or a challenge (for John), John spent his time after eating capturing bees in each of our 3 cans of soda (one bee per can).

That night in Oxford dinner was on our own. We selected the White Horse Pub featured in some of the Inspector Morse shows. The food was okay, but nothing to rave about. I think we prefer what are now referred to as "gastro pubs". After dinner we walked around Oxford for a while and I got a scoop of caramel ice cream.

Once we got back to the hotel it was time to pack up to be ready to leave for Bath in the morning.

  • Day 7 - Stratford–Upon-Avon & Oxford

    15 Agustus 2017, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

After checking out of the hotel, we headed for Stratford-Upon Avon. In Stratford-Upon Avon we toured Anne Hathaway's Cottage, the Shakespeare's Birthplace Museum and Shakespeare's New Place (the home Shakespeare and Anne to after their marriage). Of the three, I enjoyed Anne Hathaway's Cottage the best. New Place, there was a 30 minute talk before the "tour". We were 3/4 of the way through the talk before we realized that the house no longer existed. I would not recommend anyone going there.

After lunch we headed for Oxford. We dropped off our things at the hotel and the group was divided into two smaller groups for a walking tour of Oxford. This helped us get oriented so we could explore the next afternoon on our own.

  • Day 6: Caernarfon & Welsh Countryside

    14 Agustus 2017, Wales ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

We headed for Caernarfon at 8:45 am. This was to give us a bit of a break after the long driving day yesterday. On our way to Caernarfon we made a short stop at q seaside town for a scenic photo opportunity. The town, Daresbury, was where Charles Dodgson who under the pen name Lewis Carroll wrote “Alice in Wonderland” had lived. On the seaside promenade was a bronze statue of the mad Haller.

After some photos and a stroll along the promenade, we headed for Caernarfon Castle. The castle was started in 1283 by King Edward I to take control of Wales. Our guide was very good. There is no doubt in my mind that she is proud to be a Welsh. After the tour we were free to explore the ruins. John and I walked the upper wall of the castle and climbed wheat seemed like at least 80 steps, but probably wasn’t more than 30. The steps were q challenge for my knee, but I “soldiered on”.

After the Castle we found a shop where we could get Cornish pasties and sausage rolls. We didn’t realize that you needed to slate you wanted to eat in (not do ”take away”) so once we realized our mistake we just paid the difference to eat in. After lunch we returned to the bus. Some of us were dropped off at Conwy to explore the castle there. Emboldened by my success climbing the towers of Caernarfon Castle, I agreed to explore Conwy castle. We had also decided we would tour the Plas Mawr Elizabethan Town House. We were able to purchase a combo ticket at Conwy Castle. The combo ticket was £16 per person, but John asked if they gave a senior discount and it turned out they did, so the tickets only cost us £7 each! We climbed 2 towers at Conwy (I refused to climb a 3rd).

Then we walked A short distance to the Elizabethan Town House. The tour included an audio tour. In each room you “synced” with a device in the room to get information about the room. The narrator portrayed a character associated with the house (owner, wife, servant, etc.). The tour was very informative.

After the tour we walked back to the hotel and got ready for dinner. After dinner we got packed and ready to check out tomorrow. The drive to Stratford-Upon-Avon and Oxford is not supposed to be as long a day as the travel day to Conwy was.

  • Day 5: Chester & North Wales Coast

    13 Agustus 2017, Wales ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Today we headed for Wales. Our first step was a "truck stop" where John got a Red Bull. At the stop there was also a Starbucks, a Subway and a Krispy Kreme shop. Our next stop was Chester which is one of the two walled cities in England. John and I stopped at an ATM before heading out to explore. Since it was close to lunchtime, we stopped in a shop and got a shop and purchased a Cornish pasty for me and a sausage roll for John. Then lunch in hand, we began our wanderings through Chester.

We walked the length of the top of the wall. The far end of the wall ended at the ruins of a Roman garden and a Roman Amphitheater. From there we headed for Chester Castle. We went inside, but there wasn't much to see and it was close to time to return to the bus.

From Chester we headed for Conwy (pronounced Conway) in Wales. After checking into the hotel and freshening up and changing clothes, we headed for dinner at Bonant Gardens Food Center. The name is misleading. It is called a Center because they grow much of their own food and supplement that with locally grown food. Prior to dinner we had a cooking demonstration of the meal we would later eat and a wine tasting. We tasted two white wines - a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc (John and I both liked the Chardonnay the best) - and two red wines - a Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec blend and a Merlot (John didn't like either and I liked the Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec blend the best). The dinner was wonderful. When we returned to the hotel we took a short walk on a path nearby.

Earlier in the day we had been told that the Estuary Conwy and the hotel are on was tidal. I had never heard the term before, but learned it means that the water goes out with the tide. While we were on our walk we witnessed this phenomenon. Where we were most of the water went out leaving just mud behind. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me on the walk, so I have no photo of the phenomenon. I had no problems with my knee either. I will see how it feels tomorrow.

  • Day 4: The Lake District

    12 Agustus 2017, Inggris ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Today we toured several places in the Lake District. Our first was an Arts and Crafts House in Blackwell. The Arts and Crafts Movement was a reaction to the excesses of Victorian industrialisation. It grew from a desire to revive traditional craftsmanship and restore simplicity and honesty to how buildings and furnishings were made. The house was very interesting. After the tour of the house we had lunch in a café on the property and then headed to Bowness-on-Windermere. When we left the house it was raining, but when we got to Bowness-on-Windermere, it had stopped.

John and I had no interest browsing the shops in the town, so we took a boat ride around the islands of Lake Windermere. When we returned to the hotel we decided to walk the trail near the hotel. Finding the trail turned out not to be a trivial task, but we finally found it. We walked about 4 miles on the trail and back to the hotel. I took & used a cane just for safety, but my knee did fine.

Our group had dinner at a nearby pub. The food was good. It is fun getting to know the members of the group.
