The 6th chamber nearby turned out to be a very small one. It was more like a grotto. But, the interesting thing about it was that the exit to all the formations was from in here via an extremely narrow passageway.Read more

Itas - Exit of the formations

The exit passageway of the formations was an adventure in itself. It was extremely narrow and we had to twist and turn our way out of it.

Itas - The climb back

As we continued our walk back, the views were amazing bit there was one more surprise in store for us. The ladder climb up one of the bolder formations. The last part of these ladders didn't even have a support or a place to hold.
The views from the top were even better. We even saw a Viscacha (a rabbit like animal endemic to the Andes).Read more

Itas - 1st cave and paintings

Back at the start, we went to the cave we had skipped on our way to the back. It was a small one totally covered by shrubs at the entrance.
Inside there were paintings also done in animal blood.

Lunch - Itas & Umajalanta cave

We stopped by at a restaurant on our way back, very near the Umajalanta cave. It had a very scenic location with the dining area looking out over the hills around.
Traveler Not a tourist season,as no soul around.

Umajalanta Cave - entrance

After the lunch, we went to the Umajalanta cave. The path had been made all the way to the cave entrance. On the way, we stopped over to deposit our bags since nothing except the cameras are allowed inside since one needs to crawl and slide at a lot of places inside. We were also provided with helmets to wear all the time. Then we set out into the cave.Read more

Umajalanta - into the cave

Then started the amazing adventure into the bowels of the earth. Definitely not advisable for those that are claustrophobic or not physically fit. There are many narrow places to crawl through and many places where one has to climb down or up smooth limestone boulders using just ropes, all in pitch darkness except for the lamps on the helmets.
I've been to more than 30 different caves of different varieties but this one certainly was a very different and adventurous experience.Read more
Traveler Seems you had a guide,but no bats,reptiles or scorpions? You wanted to give company to ghosts?

Umajalanta - limestone formations

Crawling, climbing and hanging, we reached our 1st sight of the limestone formations inside the cave.

Umajalanta - limestone pillar

Deep inside, we reached a chamber where there were limestone pillars formed by millions of years of seeping water collecting calcium carbonate forming the stalagmites and stalactites eventually forming the pillars.Read more

Umajalanta - Christmas tree formation

Deeper inside we went climbing up and climbing down. We saw some interesting limestone formations like the curtain and the Christmas tree.
Traveler Is there water on floor?How about oxygen inside?

Umajalanta - Crawl to the water pool

Next up was a fabulous experience of crawling on all fours through a very narrow gap through to a bigger chamber with a waterfall.

Umajalanta - Underground waterfall

After crawling through the narrow gap we reached the chamber of the waterfall. It was surreal.
Further on, we followed the underground stream for a while

We continued along the stream for some more meters. At one of the places, we had to rappel down to go along the stream again.

Eventually we saw some light ahead and it was the exit of the cave.

Off to Cochabamba

Outside the cave, we saw some dinosaur footprints. The jeep took us back to Toro Toro where a mini van was about to leave for Cochabamba. We wanted q drop at the bus terminal at Cochabamba but they asked for 15 b$ more per head. We started walking to check out the other buses that go to Cochabamba from Toro Toro. That's when the driver of the bus rqn after us and told us he would drop us at the bus terminal for free (no extra charge above the normal price of 35 b$ per head), so we took the van and were off to Cochabamba.Read more

Outside of the canyon, we took a different and a very scenic route back to the starting point. On the way we saw a huge turtle formation as well.

Dinner at Cochabamba

We arrived at Cochabamba by about 9:30 pm. We checked in at the same Hotel Arasan as the last time. We got the same room as well (501).
By now we were hungry so we went to the bus station opposite. It was exactly like any bus station in India. Hundreds of people milling around. Lots of sales people shouting the prices and destinations for their company. It was like in the middle of the day.
We had our dinner at the food court inside the station. I got a special vegetarian with egg meal cooked for me.
After the food, we came back to the room and slept.Read more

Cochabamba - To Cristo de la Concordia

We woke up late so we missed the breakfast which was from 7:30 - 9:00 am. We decided to laze around the hotel for a while more since there's not much to see in Cochabamba. We checked the tickets to La Paz and found them to be quite cheap at about 215 b$ per person. We booked our tickets for the evening flight since we had to wait for the laundry till 3 pm.
Since we had a few hours, we checked out, kept the bags at the reception and took the micro to the teleferico station. The bus journey cost us 2 b$ per head and took us about 15 min. At the top of the hill stands a huge statue of Jesus with his arms spread, much like in Rio.Read more

Cochabamba - Teleferico to the top

We were dropped off very near the station of the teleferico. We took the tickets to the top at 6.50 b$ per head.

Cochabamba - Cristo de la Concordia

As we started going up, the views of the city were amazing. Cochabamba is in a bowl shaped valley with hills all around.
The statue of Jesus is about 33 mts tall and is facing the city of Cochabamba blessing it with his arms spread.Read more

The views of the city from above were very lovely. One could see a 360 degrees panorama all around. We roamed around for a while and then sat on one of the benches to have our breakfast.

Off to La Paz

We came down the same route and took the micro back to the hotel. Luckily, the laundry had completed so we took our clothes and then took a taxi to the airport for 15 b$.
We had to wait for about an hour for our flight at the airport. There were regular flights almost 1 every 45 min to La Paz. All the flights seemed to be fully booked. The economy looks like booming here..Read more

Plane cemetery Cochabamba

At the Cochabamba airport, there was a huge number of abandoned planes. Most of the planes were belonging to AeroSur. Looks like it got bankrupt and no one bought the planes. There were at least 20 of these planes lying around at the airport. The doors were open. Most probably the inner parts would have been taken. It was like a plane cemetery.
Also visible from the airport was the huge Jesus statue of Crist de la Concordia.Read more

Flight to La Paz

The flight from Cochabamba to La Paz was a short one of 45 min. The views on the way were breathtaking. It was cloudy in Cochabamba when we left and it was no different in La Paz. There was a thick layer of low level clouds partially covering the sun and the snow peaks around.Read more
