• Tramping tales - Part 4

    5 luglio 2025, Nuova Zelanda ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Can you believe we're in part four of tramping tales? That means I've completed 15 lovely hikes already and aim to double that number before I leave New Zealand.

I've already been researching revisiting and tramping all 11 of the great walks. I will need to save hard and have at least 2 months off work!! Don't worry, looking at the costs, it won't be for quite a few years!!!

    Tramps in this exciting episode!

Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks) and Paparoa gorge - 2 walks in one! The rocks were stunning but my favourite was the gorge walk, it is part of one of the 11 great walks and I did a get small portion of it! About 10km of a very long track! A stunning, sub tropical walk.

Greymouth - Point Elizabeth - a beautiful one way easy walk and then return, 2.4km to the viewing point where you could see the coast towards Punakaiki where I had been the day before. Unfortunately I had walked from the campervan park to the starting point which was just over 4km, each way! So a short walk turned into a half day tramp!

A cycling trek along (part of) the west coast wilderness track! This day needs to be included somewhere as it was such fun so it's in the trekking tales. Combination of roads and tracks but mainly off road tracks which were both beautiful and fun! I think i did about 50 miles in the day which was great exercise but points to remember as a 53 year old. Always take pain killers before a long bike journey and pack a few in your back pack!!

Okarito wetlands and Trig walk - a beautiful small trek in awful weather! But glorious forest scenery and the walkway through the wetlands was dramatic. I hadn't brought my back pack and panicked a bit so didn't make it to the top but I intend to before I leave Franz Josef. (NB, never made it back, the weather turned to continuous heavy rain for 48 hours!)

First full day in Franz Josef was spent researching walks and I decided to do 3 small walks during the day. Tatare tunnels, Callery gorge and finally the forest walk to have the first glance at the famous Franz Josef Glacier.
