• Horizontal falls and Cape Leveque

    28 Haziran 2017, Avustralya ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Mum and dad have taken over the blog for a day!
We had a wonderful day of adventure flying from Broome over the Dampier Peninsula. The plane was a teeny 6 seat Cessna and it was very windy!! Our pilot Aaron managed the wind well, he said it felt like flying in Tasmania! The explorer William Dampier was a buccaneer, exploring and taking things like a pirate, but as an employee of the British government last century.
The whole Kimberley area is stunning, amazing coloured landscapes with the red pindan soil, greenery and white silica sand. We flew over King Sound where the tide changes so dramatically- 12 metres from high to low tide every day. Horizontal Falls is where the water falls sideways! There are 2 falls. Around there the earth is all folded from colliding tectonic plates. We landed at Cape Leveque where there is a lighthouse, amazing pindan beach like nowhere else, and yummy barramundi for lunch.
On the way home we heard great stories about a plane crash with lots of diamonds lost on the beach... They're still there! And Cable Beach where we are staying in Broome is the place a communication cable was put under the ocean a long time ago to Indonesia and Singapore, so Australia could make phone calls to the world.
