    Leaving home

    June 23, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We woke up when it was still dark and very cold! It was lots of fun being at the airport and on the plane with Nannie and Gramps, our Oldmeadow cousins, aunts, uncles, except for baby Lexi and Aunty Kate. Lexi has been too sick and we miss them. The plane went twice around Uluru so we could all see it. The red dirt is so different. Ruby was excited when we went above the clouds.Read more

  • Broome and a sunset

    June 23, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

It's so warm here! Already we have done so much. We love our resort and the pool is fantastic. We have seen (and smelled!!!) camels walking up from the beach, and had dinner at sunset.

  • Markets, pool and big fish!

    June 25, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We're getting used to Broome time and trying not to wake up at Melbourne time! Mum went to the markets and loved the boab trees in the sun. They look like big bottles. We have been in the pool and playground a lot. It's so warm in the water. Dad went on a boat early today and caught a big fish. The restaurant chef will cook it for us tomorrow!! It's called a Maki.Read more

  • Camels!!

    June 26, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We were all so excited to ride on camels on the beach. They are nice friendly animals and they don't smell as bad as we expected! Dad and Sam rode on a camel called Rodney, he was an old racing camel and he had been unbeatable! Mum and Ruby's camel was called Harley. He is old but cuddly. The camel behind kept trying to lick mum's knee! The sun was going down and there were some people with campervans setting up to camp on the beach. That's different!Read more

  • Beachcombing and fun at the resort.

    June 26, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

What a big, fun day we've had! After breakfast we explored the beach, with amazing rocks in layers, and bubbly glassy ones from a volcano! The water is so clean and blue. Back at the resort we had face painting and lots of water play. Hey, look for a goanna camouflaged in the last photo!Read more

  • BBQ fish and mini golf

    June 26, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

What a cool end to a big day. Uncle Buster and Uncle Dave cooked the Maki fish the men all caught yesterday. We all tried it even if we were nervous about new food, and it was great! We all played mini golf too and had a fun family time. Sam got a hole in one!Read more

  • A special birthday celebration.

    June 27, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

We had a wonderful dinner party for Gramps' 70th birthday. We were in an amazing round room with lots of wine bottles around the wall, beautiful paintings and a groovy chandelier. Everyone had so much fun talking, eating and celebrating. Doug, Stew, Buster and Natalie all made nice speeches. We are very lucky to all be here to celebrate with Gramps and Nannie. Earlier there was an inflatable water activity, and we explored a Buddha sanctuary where people go to relax.Read more

  • Horizontal falls and Cape Leveque

    June 28, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Mum and dad have taken over the blog for a day!
We had a wonderful day of adventure flying from Broome over the Dampier Peninsula. The plane was a teeny 6 seat Cessna and it was very windy!! Our pilot Aaron managed the wind well, he said it felt like flying in Tasmania! The explorer William Dampier was a buccaneer, exploring and taking things like a pirate, but as an employee of the British government last century.
The whole Kimberley area is stunning, amazing coloured landscapes with the red pindan soil, greenery and white silica sand. We flew over King Sound where the tide changes so dramatically- 12 metres from high to low tide every day. Horizontal Falls is where the water falls sideways! There are 2 falls. Around there the earth is all folded from colliding tectonic plates. We landed at Cape Leveque where there is a lighthouse, amazing pindan beach like nowhere else, and yummy barramundi for lunch.
On the way home we heard great stories about a plane crash with lots of diamonds lost on the beach... They're still there! And Cable Beach where we are staying in Broome is the place a communication cable was put under the ocean a long time ago to Indonesia and Singapore, so Australia could make phone calls to the world.

  • Farewell to Broome

    June 30, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Here are some more pictures of our last day in Broome. We saw a beautiful sunset last night, had face painting, and said goodbye to Nannie and Gramps. We flew into Kunnunurra which is a desert town with a big lake (they can grow lots of fruit with the water!) and arrived in Darwin after dark. We'll go exploring tomorrow!!Read more

  • A hovercraft and DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS!!!

    June 30, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Well what an adventure on our last morning in Broome! We got up very early when it was still dark and went to ride on a hovercraft! It was the coolest, easiest way to get to see some dinosaur footprints on a nearby beach. We also got to see a beautiful sunrise... The hovercraft was amazing fun! Even though it seems like a marine vehicle, it is more like a plane with how it works. We floated 3 feet (almost a metre) above the ground so rocks and turtles weren't a problem! It was incredible to see the footprints of a Brachiosaurus and a baby. Paleontologists from around the world come to Broome to study them. There are no bones though. Some of us stood in the footprints so we could imagine the way the dinosaurs walked. How amazing.Read more

  • Territory Day in Darwin

    July 1, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We didn't expect to arrive in the middle of a celebration but we did! The first of July is an anniversary of the Northern Territory starting it's own government. And it's also the one day a year anyone can buy and set off fireworks! Our apartment is at the waterfront and we can hear a lot of fireworks and we can see the big ones. Hopefully no-one starts a fire! Uncle Buster came for a BBQ on our balcony.Read more

  • Waves, wharf and markets!

    July 2, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

We have had a big fun day! We went to the wave pool near our apartment, and it was so much fun!! Then we had a big walk to the South Hill Wharf where we saw memorials to the bombing of Darwin and had an icecream. Mum was excited to go to the Mindil beach markets. The beach was really nice and we bought necklaces at the market and went on a bouncy castle slide. Ruby lost a tooth so the snowcones helped! Sam said he saw a lot of things that remind him of Melbourne, especially the war memorials.Read more

  • Tunnels, crocodiles and Uncle Buster!

    July 3, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

We are staying right near the special tunnels of Darwin. They were dug out to store fuel for warplanes, so it couldn't be blown up by bad guy bombers in World War 2. Seems like hard work, all that digging! There was also a cool robot made of old ship parts.
Then we went to a crocodile centre in town. We had our photos taken with a little crocodile called Fluffy. He felt soft to hold and he's was very calm. We also liked the snakes and lizards and turtles. We had a nice time exploring shops in Darwin.
Tonight we had dinner at Uncle Buster's house. He cooked yummy fish on the balcony. His house and pool are very tropical! We loved playing with Baz the dog.

  • Termites and waterfalls

    July 4, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

What a big day we have had! We went to Litchfield National Park and it was so hot. Really hot. Hard to believe it's winter here!! So some of the walking was hard work but it was amazing to see big beautiful waterfalls. In the forest we saw and heard lots of very noisy bats. We saw some huge amazing termite mounds that were 3 times bigger than people. The little termites build the towers with air pockets to cool their underground homes. There were black landscapes with fresh green growth, from the Aborigines burning off the land. Our favourite part of the day was swimming in a waterhole with a waterfall. We could swim right under the waterfall like a bath and shower all at once. So refreshing! And not a crocodile in sight. Let's sleep well tonight.Read more

  • Bye-bye wave pool, and bye-bye Darwin!

    July 5, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

After our big day yesterday we relaxed near our apartment and went to the wave pool twice! We all loved it. We also had a little explore up the hill into Darwin city and found a horse wearing pants. It was another hot day but not as hot as the National Park yesterday.
We had to wash our hire car Monte, Ruby will miss him! We had a special Asian dinner with Uncle Buster. It's hard to believe we will be home tomorrow...
