We joined the Kelly Gang!

Our last stop before home was Glenrowan, the town where Ned Kelly was captured. Every single building and street in the town has something to do with the Kelly Gang or family. Do the local people get sick of it?

There is so much to say about Ned Kelly! We learned heaps. He's a famous bushranger ("bad guy"). His family was very poor and his dad was in jail a lot. Ned did some little bad things when he was young, but he got put in jail when he was a teenager for something he didn't do, for 3 years. I reckon he might have been angry when he got out. We feel like he didn't need to turn so bad if he had an easier family life. He became a robber and did kill someone. Anyway he seemed to have clever ways of evading the police but in the end justice won the battle and he got caught and executed.

Life looked like it was tough in the olden days in the little old huts. There was a type of fridge which was just a cage with a wet sack over it!

We dressed up for photos. Ruby wasn't so sure about the clothes but it was fun! Do you think we look like we mean business? The armour was heavy!Les mer

A submarine far from the ocean!

After a very long day in the car we spent the night in Holbrook. It's a pretty small town and the only cafe open was a Mexican one, so that was lucky because we love tacos. Our cabin was small!

There is a huge submarine in the park! We could climb on it. Why is there a submarine on land? Well there was this Captain called Holbrook who sailed on it to fight the Germans in World War 2. It was an old fashioned submarine at the time and they nearly ran out of oxygen but Holbrook was very brave and took down a whole battleship! The town had been called Germanton and wanted a new name so they chose Holbrook. He thought that was so nice he raised money to bring the sub there once it stopped being used.Les mer

We said goodbye to our little house at Merewether and called in to Johe's place out of town for a final catch up with Johe, Todd, Hannah and Ben. They were getting ready for horserides when we got there! Lucky! Ella is a beautiful, patient horse. We got to trot which was awesome. Even mum had a ride!Les mer

A party and a storm

We went to Hannah's 21st birthday party and had heaps of pizza. It was a very special occasion. Mum had to give a speech that she wasn't expecting but it seemed ok! We love Hannah. After the party we went to the most amazing playground at Speers Point park. A storm started so we had to run to the car but there was a huge rainbow back at our holiday house.Les mer

This morning we went to Merewether Ocean Baths. It was a pool at the ocean... Sandy and seaweedy but rectangular like a huge pool. It was so cold! Ruby was the bravest, the only one to put her head underwater.Les mer

Wet wetlands and good friends

Mum's friend Johe works at the Wetlands Discovery centre, and we went there today. There were tonnes of mosquitoes even though we had insect repellent on. They swarmed our car! We went dipnetting and mum caught a tadpole. It was good to see a wetlands with big ponds, we've been to other ones which were dry! A funny thing was that mum's hat fell off into the pond, and we think an eel might be living in it now at the bottom of the pond.

Tonight Hannah came and brought pizzas for dinner! She is the reason for our road trip, it's her 21st birthday party tomorrow. She got off work early and it was cool she hung out with us.Les mer

Finally we're in Newcastle!!

After almost a week on the road we are here! Our little holiday house is excellent according to us kids. It has lots of furry and fluffy rugs, and kids toys. And a trampoline and skate ramp in the little yard! Mum is happy we have a view of the water, we are high up.

This morning we went on the Memorial Walk high on the cliffs above the ocean. It is for the men and women who lost their lives in all the wars. It was really beautiful. And super duper windy.Les mer

We went inside a sheep

A short stop at a bakery in Goulburn for snacks, and we went to the giant Merino! We parked near its butt and climbed inside to look out the eyes. It's a big sheep farming area producing lots of wool.

It was so much fun to be with Sophia and Hannah in Canberra. Their mum Linda is mum's very good friend. Stephen and dad talked a lot too. We wish we lived closer together. Sophia and Sam played Minecraft in the dark, and Hannah and Ruby had a great time together. There was also a spa bath!Les mer

Mogo Zoo was awesome.

It was so hard to choose only 6 photos! There were lots of unusual and endangered or just cute animals at Mogo Zoo yesterday.

Ruby couldn't choose a favourite but she loved feeding the giraffes and deer. We both did. The giraffe's tongue was huge! It was rough and hurt our hands a little bit. Such a cool experience! Sam's favourite was the moustache monkey (Emperor Tamarin)- they looked a bit like the Lorax, small, cute but pretty fierce when they were wrestling each other! Mum and Dad liked the binturong, an animal we'd never seen before. It's a bear cat that climbs, swims and eats fruit. The most amazing thing is that it does a wee to mark its territory and the stuff smells like popcorn! We could smell popcorn around the enclosure. Weird!

And we always love meerkats... The lookout ones are so alert and quick, and at Mogo Zoo the young ones were wrestling and playing dead!
Then... Back on the road towards Canberra!Les mer

Malua Bay is beautiful.

We counted down the hours and minutes until we arrived in Malua Bay where mum's Aunty Poggy and Uncle Garry live. We had some funny times with the GPS robot lady in Dad's phone who tried to tell us some very silly directions. We got here anyway!

Malua Bay is a quiet little beach town. We found a great playground at the beach and went in the waves even though it was super windy. Poggy and Garry have chickens and hilarious kittens. It's been a really relaxing visit here. We will have more pictures to post tomorrow, especially of the kittens... They are sleeping now!Les mer

Cheese!

Leaving Eden we knew we'd miss waking up to the amazing bellbirds. They echoed everywhere even though they are so tiny. It's clever that you can't tell where their chiming sound is coming from.

We saw a lot of cows and green fields as we drove north. Of course we went to the cheese factory at Bega! Then we found a very interesting town to explore at lunchtime, called Cobargo. It looked very historical and the shops had really old things or good art and craft.Les mer

Killer Whale Museum!

We were amazed to learn that killer whales helped men round up other whales for harpooning. The main one was called Old Tom and he wore down his teeth by pulling on the boat ropes. The killer whales got paid for helping, with leftover food to eat. The museum about all this was also in a beautiful building with great ocean views.Les mer

Yes, we are expecting paradise!
Eden is a nice beach town and we will explore tomorrow. We are staying in a cool cabin with 2 bunk beds so we can both be on the top!!! It is a small cabin but we love it because the playground is just outside. And there are 2 bunk beds!Les mer

We said goodbye to our nice apartment in Paynesville and checked out the market where mum and dad bought relish for a change, and we got dream catchers. The locals were so nice.
Lakes entrance is a fun holiday town. We went across the bridge to the 90 Mile Beach... Yes it is that long! We all got wet in our clothes in the waves. Ruby fell over in the water so we had fish and chips for lunch in the sun to dry out.Les mer

Jetty, raft and lemonade

This morning we discovered the jetty near our apartment. There are so many boats in the canal. It's a different kind of life here. Near our apartment there is also a cool old raft which looks like a broken down caravan you can ride on the water. We tried to imagine living on it. Then we had fancy lemonade drinks on our verandah. Today was a good day!

Hello! We had a relaxing morning then lunch at a boat club. So many boat clubs in Paynesville! Then we caught a ferry to Raymond Island. It is a 2 minute ferry ride but there is no bridge so you have to get the ferry. Imagine living on the island! It is an amazing natural place and there are lots of koalas even in people's yards. We rode in a 4 person surry bike to explore the island. Sam was the best pedaller with his strong legs! Ruby learned to steer..Les mer

Peaceful Paynesville.

When mum said we were going to Paynesville we thought it was painsville which didn't sound too good for a holiday. There was a LOT of roadwork on the way. We stopped to look at interesting shops and galleries in Yarragon, having lunch at a bakery. Our apartment in Paynesville is so nice and modern and comfortable, right near the water. Everyone here has a boat or yacht. The playground is pretty good and at the waterfront we saw a swan making a nest, and a really cool public toilet! There are not many street lights so the sky is much darker than Melbourne. We had fun walking in our street in pitch dark!Les mer
