‘To build a city where it is impossible to build a city is madness in itself, but to build there one of the most elegant and grandest of cities is the madness of genius.’ - Alexander Herzen

This is my third visit to Venice. The first was in the second half of the 1970s - I don’t recall the year. It was my first time in Europe and Venice was my second destination, Florence the first. My second visit was in 1987 with my sister Pam, her husband Peter and their (then young) sons Nick and Ben. This is Domi’s second visit to Venice, the first with an older brother when he was 12 years old, almost 60 years ago.

We finished our travels in Venice as much for practical reasons as any … it’s not far from Slovenia and there are more direct flights to Paris. But as the time grew near we were becoming quite excited by the idea.

We stayed in a great neighbourhood in a lovely Casa in a quiet courtyard. Our host Marco was delightful. He shared the history of the Casa and the neighbourhood and recommended we visit a nearby Palazzo, which proved to be a highlight of our brief time in this unique and magical city.

We are so glad we returned to Venice, decades later. It’s been an absolute treat and a perfect ending to this adventure which began in Dubrovnik on 1 September. We are heading to the airport soon … Paris for the weekend to see the family and then home, sweet home, to Pretty Beach. My heart is full and grateful.

    Until next time ❤️
