• Eploring Hobart and MONA

    March 24 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today we spent almost the entire day in a very cool museum, called MONA.

MONA is owned by David Walsh, who is one of the richest gamblers, and apparently an eccentric art collector. The museum is his private collection, and is built into the ground like a James Bond villain’s lair. Everything about the architecture also screams Bond villain, and exploring the intricate building is part of the fun!

Some highlights include a glass elevator down the middle of the museum to the bottom floor and a multi story sandstone wall through the middle of the building. In addition there are multiple long, and ominously lit tunnels.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so we’ve added a bunch showing off the museum’s architecture, as well as some of the most interesting exhibits.

Following our time at MONA, we headed to Cascade Brewing which is the oldest brewery in Australia, operating since 1824. We went on a brewery tour, and explored the inner workings of this storied building. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside, but it was incredibly cool to see, especially as much of the machinery is decades old and still in use!

Following our tour, we did a tasting of Cascade’s brews, and then headed out to dinner at The Drunken Admiral on the marina. This was excellent seafood, and we explored the area following for great views of the marina and docked fishing boats. Finally we headed home to prep for a big exploration day tomorrow, heading for Bruny Island.
