Arundel Castle, Brighton

Today we visited Arundel Castle, and explored Brighton.

We started our day with a lovely breakfast and conversation with our BnB hosts. They were a fantastic couple, and very kind, and we wished we had more time here! After breakfast we hit the road to Arundel Castle. This castle is actually still in use as a residence, and was meticulously cared for. We started our exploration of the castle viewing the interior and going onto the walls. The interior was quite swanky, and the bathrooms had running water, flushing toilets, etc. The halls were filled with gorgeous art, and the whole place was extremely decked out. On the walls we got great views of the castle exterior and surrounding town, and once we’d had our fill we explored the church built into the castle, which was quite intricate.

After exploring the interior of the castle we moved onto the exterior, checking out the expansive gardens and church crypt. The crypt was a bit creepy with ghoulish representations on some of the tombs, while the garden was absolutely stunning and huge.

There was a medieval exhibit set up on one part of the castle grounds, so we also explored that, watching knights do mock battle. The exhibit was super interactive, and there were stations to do things like shoot crossbows or practice archery.

Following the castle we drove to Brighton, where we checked into our hotel for the night. We walked all over the city to check it out, and our first stop was the Royal Pavilion. This location was an old summer home of the English Royalty, that was built in an Indian style(now it is owned by the city). Around this area we particularly enjoyed the neighborhoods around The Lanes, which are winding streets filled with shops. We enjoyed Vietnamese street food food in this area that reminded us of our travels there, and then wandered the beach to the Brighton pier, which was a behemoth of a pier covered in roller coasters, food stalls, and the like.
