St. Michael’s Mount, Jurassic Coast

Today we visited St Michael’s Mount, and the Jurassic Coast.

We started our day with a lovely breakfast at our AirBnb(a traditional Cornish breakfast, where we even tried hog pudding, which is essentially Cornish haggis), and then hit the road for a very long driving day(6 hours in the car!!).

Our first stop was St. Michael’s Mount, which is a very impressive castle built atop a tidal island. The castle is accessible by foot only during certain times of day when the tide is out, and the tide changes here are incredible, with the entire harbor built next to the castle draining of water at low tide. We walked across the stone path through the ocean to reach the castle, and then hiked up to it for a tour of the inside. Once we’d had our fill of the castle, we grabbed Cornish pasties, which originated from Cornwall. Interestingly, the pasties have a crimped edge, as they were originally made for miners to eat without needing to wash their hands. They could eat the pasty and chuck the crust!

After St. Michael’s Mount we headed first to our BnB to check in.

After checking in, we headed next to the Jurassic Coast. This is a chalk coast, made of calcium deposits from millions of dead microorganism’s skeletons. The net result is a white cliffside running down the coast that is incredible to see. Our first stop on the Jurassic Coast was Durdle Door, which was a super impressive sea arch, hemmed in by chalk cliffs. We hiked above it and got some awesome shots, before heading next to Lulworth Cove. Lulworth Cove was a scenic chalk white cove, and we hiked up above this too for more scenic views. Our last stop of the night was Harry’s Rock, which was the best of the three stops by a mile. This location brought us up to the edge of the chalk cliffs, and gave us spectacular views of the sunset behind them. There was a sea arch, and a number of very cool jagged sea stacks.

All of the travels today had us out late, so we drove home in the dark through some windy country roads with MANY deer on the sides. It has us driving very warily, and we were happy to flop into bed once we got home!Meer informatie
