    Landmannalaugar & Gluggafoss

    Today we visited Landmannalaugar and the Icelandic Highlands followed by Gluggafoss waterfall.

    We started our day with breakfast at our hotel, and then we quickly popped over to the local grocery store for some Icelandic food for lunch. We grabbed pickled herring in curry, and pickled herring in mustard, as well as two types of caviar(red and black). We also grabbed dried salted fish, which is essentially Iceland’s jerky. Funnily caviar was one of the few things that was inexpensive at the grocery store, as it is locally sourced.

    Our grocery experience was immediately followed by some intense driving. Landmannalaugar is a remote area in Iceland’s central highlands, and it’s only accessible via F roads. These roads are legal only for four wheel drive vehicles and aren’t paved; they are riddled with rocks, potholes, and all manner of bumps. We had an exciting and bumpy drive down an hour and a half of F roads to reach our destination, and wow was it worth it!

    At Landmannalaugar we hiked two mountains, Mt. Blahnúkúr and Mt. Brennisteinsalda, for a total of seven miles or so, with 2,000 feet of elevation. Mt. Blahnúkúr was the taller of the two, and afforded slightly better views due to its positioning, but both climbs were absolutely stunning! There were tons of volcanic vents kicking off steam, and rock formations of rhyolite so the area felt otherworldly. One other unique thing about the area was that the local campsite at the base of the mountains had a geothermal spring and stream, and this area had a ton of people swimming in the warm waters.

    Once we’d finished our hikes, we drove back out on the F roads to reach Gluggafoss waterfall, which was an impressive cascading torrent that had carved its way through the mountainside, creating essentially tunnels through it. It was neat to see, and was a nice stop on the way to our hotel. Our hotel was near yet another waterfall, the Skogafoss waterfall, so we plan to check that out in the morning(we can see it from our window and are a five minute walk away!)    Läs mer
