    Þórsmörk, Solheimajökull, and Skógafoss

    Today we visited Þórsmörk(or Thorsmork) which is a nature reserve in the Icelandic Highlands, the glacier Solheimajökull, and the waterfall Skógafoss.

    We started our day with an excellent breakfast at our hotel; they had the pickled herring in curry, mustard, and vinegar and onion, so it was fun mixing and matching three types. We also learned on our tour yesterday that there have been a few years Iceland was the top exporter of herring in the world!

    After breakfast we headed to Þórsmörk, and parked at our guides location on the exterior. To access this part of the highlands requires some serious off-road fire power, and our guide took us over multiple rivers and large piles of rocks in a lifted Mercedes.. this thing was a beast! Just check out the picture, it’s definitely a dream ride for Chelsea 😊

    On the tour we first visited a cave and clambered into it which was a cool experience, as we could see the river running through it, and light at either end. Next we went to one of the glaciers in the park, Crater Glacier, and enjoyed views of it from below.

    Our next stop was the Valahnukur hike, which was accessed from a base camp in the heart of the valley. This hike took us to the top of a central mountain, and gave us panoramic views of the entire valley, including glaciers and the glacial rivers running every which way.. it was beyond epic! To end our trip with the guide we stopped at a canyon which was used in filming for game of thrones.

    After the guided trip we headed to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which was huge, and pretty cool to inspect as you can walk behind it. We also checked out the nearby Gljúfrabúi waterfall which was inside a cave and got us soaked!

    Our next stop was the Solheimajökull Glacier. Here we were able to hike all the way to the base of this glacier, and get some awesome shots.

    To end our day we drove back to our hotel and walked to the nearby Skógafoss waterfall, afterwards calling it a night.    Read more
